DeepSea’s Journal

Good evening Cadre. It’s been a pretty good week. My better half found someone selling wood jungle gym and after speaking to him on the phone he said if I could come the same day I could have to for free, it even came with the original manual and parts list. 3 trips later I had one heck of a puzzle scattered across the backyard. I looked it all over and after a trip to Home Depot I was ready to get to work. I’ve been at it for 3 days now and its 75% finished. I just need to do a little more sanding, stain it and figure out how to get the roof in place without completely disassembling it. The best part of the whole process is seeing the smile on my little one’s face when she is playing on it.

On to the shaving portion. I’ve continued using the GC .84 that is on loan to me and I’ve come to the conclusion it’s a fantastic razor, just not on consecutive days for me. I’ve been alternating between it and the Lupo and I will definitely have one in the den in the future. Thanks again @Dave in KY !
I got a package in the mail today that @MilkCrate generously sent. Thank you Tim!

I took it for a spin tonight and I am looking forward to learning how to wield a straight. I’m still waiting on the a strop to get here so it’ll be a couple more days before I get at it again. The shave went fairly well besides a racing stripe on my left cheek. I tried my hand at 3 passes with the straight and then a quick clean up pass with the Lupo. Lisa’s Barber Shoppe produced a slick and stable lather to accompany my 40 minute long shave. Going forward I’ll be doing 1 pass with the razor and finished up with a DE until it doesn’t feel so awkward in my hands.
If you made it this far, thanks for dropping by and have a great day!

Nice scores! Have patience with the SR, it took me about 30 shaves before my muscle memory started delivering really good shaves.

Great post. Love the jungle gym. It's a relatively small window of time for kids to enjoy those things, but they love them. My kids enjoyed something similar, though not quite as big.

Thanks Tim. I’m going to keep watching tutorials for using a straight razor until the strop shows up. It’s a skill I am excited to learn.

Nicely done, @MilkCrate!

It definitely takes a while to get used to, but once you do, it's like riding a bike...kinda...but with...sharp steel.

And sweet score on the jungle gym. I always wanted one of those growing up. I try to play on one as often as age-appropriate. 🤣

They’re always age appropriate! I put the slide on the main structure first so I could slide down to get more supplies.

For now, you can practice your muscle memory and coordination by using a belt and a butter knife. Yes, you will nick your strop eventually. Yes, you will shout out some very bad words. And unless you cut your strop in half (which is unlikely), it can probably be repaired.

I’ve been getting a bit of practice with a butter knife. I think the strop taking a while to get here might be a blessing and allowing me more time to get the motions down.

Good evening! I now have 6 full days of work into the play set and it’s pretty much finished, just waiting on a set of hand rails to arrive in the mail. The little bit of sanding I thought I had to die turned into about 10 hours over 2 days. Also, the next time I decide to stain it paint something with so many little pieces I’m using it as excuse to get an airless sprayer. The ladies of the house approve of the end result and I am looking forward to having some meals and snacks with them on the built in picnic bench.

Tonight’s shave was fantastic. The GC and Sputnik blade took care of 2 days of growth with ease. I’ve had a 2 oz puck of Siliski Soap hanging around for a couple months and the alphabet theme for this month have me the push I needed to put it to use. The lather whipped up very easily and provided slickness for days. It also paired very will with Stirling’s Hipster Splash.
