DeepSea’s Journal

After sleeping in it, I’m going to do the same thing. I have my other straight being restored and should have it back next week. If you don’t mind me asking, where did you order the lapping film from?

I ordered mine from Amazon, but that is because I was impatient and not using my brain. Tim suggested Nanolap technologies.

Sorry you got bit. Just remember to take it slow and watch a few videos. And take all the advice @MilkCrate can give you on the film. I have no experience with it but here great things from him and others.

Bummer about the SR needing to be reworked, that stinks!

I’m going to just throw my $0.00002 in and ask you to consider how much you like the looks of the razor? If you really feel that it is in otherwise top condition and you like the filigree/etch work, I’d side with the fellas saying to farm out the work to a resident honemeister. Practice instead on blades you’re not so attached to.

IS there any damage to the Blade? if not I would be happy to hone it for you if you cannot get the edge where you want.

Thanks. I’ll definitely be watching many videos before I put the razor to the lapping film. I was thinking of recording it to get some feedback on how I’m doing with it.

Tim sent me the razor to be able to practice on. It’ll have a bit of sentimental value since it was the first traditional straight I’ve shaved with and if I can learn to hone with it it would add that much more. I won’t try to force it and there is a good chance I’ll have to send it out to get back to shave ready, but I figure I may as well give it a go.

Doesn’t appear to have any damage. I can’t see any cracks or chips or anything bent. I’m just hoping to not do any more harm to the edge when the lapping film get here. I very much appreciate the offer on the honing and may have to take you up on the offer. I doubt my initial attempt to hone will produce an edge that is good enough for a brand new straight shaver. Thanks Dave!

CBL Master Barber

Zingari Man Unscented Balm

It was fairly late last night by the time I got to around to shaving. After the previous evening’s shave I should have stuck with the DE for brevity’s sake but I was stubborn and pulled out the Kamisori. The shave turned out fairly well, I was just a bit heavy handed as pointed out by the aftershave. Such a good burn but it quickly soothed my face and my skin felt great afterwards. I am really impressed with Chiseled Face’s splashes. I’ve been going back and forth about the Yaqi 2-Band Badger but lately it’s been performing quite will. I has a good amount of scrub and releases the lather nicely. The CBL Master Barber if fantastic stuff. The performance is amazing with its very rich creamy lather and it can take on quite a bit of water when thinning it out for an open blade shave. What I am really enjoying the most of the Sputnik blades @Dave in KY sent me. I’m not sure how many uses I have on it but it still feels like it’s brand new. It’s sharp and smooth in any razor I put it in. I think a DE shave will be in the books for this evening to give my skin a little break. I don’t really find AC Kamisori anywhere near as forgiving as a traditional straight. Anywho, I’m just rambling at this point. Hope you’re all have a wonderful day. With all the talk about a cadre Friday, I may have to take one as well!

It seems I’m falling behind in logging my shaves. Just haven’t been feeling 100% like myself. It’ll pass like it usually does I’m sure.

I decided to be stubborn and give the Boker another go. I stropped like crazy. 100 laps on denim then 50 on leather. I was able to get an ok shave out of it. The 1/3 of the blade from the toe back is where the edge is compromised. The other 2/3 of the blade cut like a dream. I used LNHC Barber Shoppe and it did a wonderful job as sisal. Did a little cleanup with the Lupo and finished it off with some GTB.

Last night was a 2 pass with a little clean up with the Lupo loaded with a Sputnik that I lost track of the usage on. Super smooth and ended up mostly BBS. Soap of choice was Zingari Man’s The Wanderer and finished it up with CF Santa Paula.

My razor I sent out to be restored will be shipped back to me tomorrow along with a sight unseen razor. A little under a 1/16 had to be taken off the blade due to a very small crack so I am eager to see it all shined up and ready for action.

I’ve been watching some of the honing videos posted here and it sure does seem like a very involved process. I still have yet to order any lapping film but I tend to over research prior to starting down a new road. It’ll be adventure for sure.

Hope you’re up to snuff soon!

Involved is an understatement lol. I know some folks find it zen...I dunno lol, even the little I did with balsa strops was tedious. Hope it’s a worthwhile journey for you!

There's no such thing as over researching. I'm still doing research on stones and it's been a year long process. @MilkCrate helped me out with his method of using lapping film, which worked perfectly for me to start out with. But at the end of the day everybody does things a little differently.
