Curious when they say they use used barrels for aging and then discuss the flavors added from doing that. Used wine barrels are called neutral because they no longer inpart the oak flavors into the wine.

Maybe the higher alcohol content?
I know that once you take whiskey out of a barrel and bottle it, it's done aging. If you bought a bottle of 10 year old whiskey in 1978, what you have today is a 40 year old bottle of 10 year old whiskey, not 50 year old whiskey. Which is not the same for wine, it keeps changing even after it's bottled.

This is not the 1st whiskey that I've had that was done like this. The 1st I ever had was Jefferson's Reserve Goth. It was finished in Goth Cabernet barrels you could really taste the typical Cabernet flavors in the whiskey.

A quick google search revels several wines that have been aged in whiskey barrels.

FYI: Bourbon barrels, according to federal regulations, can only be used to age bourbon once. Most of the used barrels wind up in Scotland and they age scotch in them.

Great review of the whiskeys.

Thanks Don!

I have had beer aged in whiskey barrels. It was delicious. Could definitely taste the whiskey.

Me too, I had forgot about that. Kentucky Bourbon Ale was one of my favorites. Alas thou my body will not handle beer anymore. Just a few sips shoots my blood sugar through the roof! For some reason whiskey and wine, as long as I just sip them, do no do that.

Unfortunately, I am starting to get more sensitive to alcohol as well. I am having to pay more attention to alcohol content.

I am fond of a decent bourbon once in a while but drink fairly rarely. Now and then I have a beer or hard cider but bourbon is the drink of choice. Nice reading!

Nice lesson on the barrels. I was always curious how that all worked. I just know what I like taste wise!

Ah yes, I could be they are getting flavors from the wine in the wood vs the wood itself. You also have a point about the higher alcohol content maybe pulling more flavors out of the wood itself. Side note, I got a use wine barrel to make a wine barrel table out of. While the project was in the garage it smell just like a winery! Oh man was that like opening the door to heaven when I went in.

Thanks Chad! "...I just know what I like taste wise!" and that is really all that matters!

I can imagine!

So give me your top 5 bourbons or whiskeys....... Curious to see what I am missing. ? Let's say price isn't an object but if you go over the $100 mark, you may get some heads spinning.

Ooooh that's not to hard

And I'm keeping it limited to bourbons only.

Without taking price or availability into consideration, in no certain order:

Pappy Van Winkle 15 year old
Old Rip Van Winkle 10 year old
Wild Turkey Masters Keep
Wild Turkey Decades
Jim Beam Distiller's Masterpiece
Jefferson's Reserve Ocean (Each voyage is different, but of the 4 or 5 that I've had, all were great.)

Opps that 6, sorry just couldn't decide between the two Wild Turkeys, both are great!

Now taking price and availability into consideration, in no certain order:

Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit
Jefferson's Reserve
Blanton's
Rabbit Hole
Woodford Reserve Double Oak
Town Branch

All of these are in the $45 to $65 price range and with the exception of the Blanton's (I really don't know why, 2 years ago it was always on the shelf, now it's disappears as soon as it's put out. Not like they are making less of it.) should be fairly easy to find, so I threw in a 6th one. And really I could probably double this list without much more thought. There are a lot of great bourbons in the $50 per bottle range. IMHO

Jim Beam Black
Wild Turkey Rare Breed
Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel
Jim Beam Devil’s Cut
Gentleman Jack

Thats my top 5

Yes I'm behind in reading and posting AGAIN!

Pre Shave: Urth Face Scrub and Wash
Hot Towel
DE Razor: F1 Gillette Fatboy (set on 6)
Blade: PolSilver Super Iridium
Brush: Stirling Soap Co Synthetic 2-Band 24mm
Soap: Chiseled Face Sherlock
Post Shave: Cold Water Rinse Alum Block, and Thayers
After Shave: Chiseled Face Sherlock Aftershave

Well my allergies were giving me fits all day and all night Sunday, so I didn't sleep worth a darn. Definitely wasn't feeling the straight this morning so I decided to go wit the Fatboy again. I also decided to dial it back to 6 and now I'm wondering why it was on 7 to start with?

Whipped up a great lather with the Stirling Synthetic and proceeded with the shave. 3 passes and just a little touch up on the neck and chin and BBS+ with no alum sting to speak of. A little weeper on the left lower neck, nothing the alum didn't take care of.

Splashed on some of the ASL and I was all ready to start the day!

Setup 4-16-2018

Didn't sleep well Monday night either. I had just gotten to sleep last night and SWMBO woke me up to inform me my humidor was beeping. Usually that means I've let it run out of water. Checked the water level and it was fine. Hmmm oh I see the wick had decided to stop wicking. No biggie just replace it, now where did I put those extras. 30 minutes lather I found them. Then I had to wait for the humidity to come back within limits. So it was about 12 midnight before I got back to bed. Slept good, just not enough of it.
So here I sit, unshaven since the above shave. I plan to remedy that in the morning!

Nice shave Craig! Sorry to hear about the issues with the humidor, though glad to hear that you got it resolved.

Nice read. Saved the cigars! I really like the pic even though I didn't like that scent.
