Straight Razor Shave #161

Pre Shave: Urth Face Wash and Scrub
Razor: Allegany Instrument Corp. WP 5/8 cira 1920 to 1940
Brush: Omega S-Brush S10019
Soap: Proraso Red
Post Shave: Cold Water Rinse Alum Block, and Dickson's
After Shave: Proraso Red After Shave Lotion
Cologne: Caswell-Massey Sandalwood Cologne

For some reason I felt compelled to use the Proraso Red Soap today. Must have been because several others have used it in their journals in the last few days. Not too much to say about this soap. Its Proraso! The lather is easy and never disappoints. I added 3 drops of glycerin just to enhance the residual slickness a tad. The Omega whipped up a nice lather in no time and it's time to get my shave on.

Okay have you ever used a straight before and from the 1st stroke though, something isn't just quite right? Well that is what happened today. The AIC was cutting okay and it wasn't harsh, but something just didn't feel right. I just wasn't getting the reduction that I normally get. Now mind you after yesterday evening shave there wasn't a whole lot to work with. Finially after giving myself a little bite on the lower right neck on the XTG pass. I lathered back up and just didn't feel the mojo for the ATG. So I grabbed the Gillette Slim out for the stand and did the ATG pass. Just a little buffing and aside from the bite, which was minor, a BBS+ shave.

The alum confirmed a good shave, just a tad bit of sting on the neck and chin.
Finished with a splash of the Proraso Red. Then a few spritzes of the Caswell-Massey Sandalwood. Journal followers if you like the scent of Proraso Red, then this cologne is a great match IMHO. I'm at about 4 hours and the scent is still present.

As I was cleaning up and went to strop the AIC, it hit me what was wrong with the edge, I forgot to strop pre-shave. That was a 1st, but I'm sure won't be the last time for that to happen. That's what happens when you interrupt or get your pre shave ritual interrupted.

Mail call today and yesterday

The other day I had decided it was time to get the bicycle ready for riding. I lubed the chain and went to air up the tires. The rear tire h
ad separated from the wheel. This is the 1st time that has happened. I've had this bike for at least 10 years, the tires are always low/flat after the winter, but the tire had never separated from the wheel before. Pump as I may, the tire would not inflate. I wet the tire around the wheel and it still didn't help. I then went to google to see how to seat tubeless tires. I found out I needed something that could deliver a large volume of air at once. They make several of these so I selected one based on reviews and ordered. I also ordered a set of new valve stems as I discovered that on mine the valve core was not removable. I also ordered a stand to mount on my work bench to hold the bike. I've always wanted one, just never got one.
Well the stems, Airshot, and stand came in today. After a trip to homedepot to get some screws, nuts, and washers. I drill the bench and mounted the stand. I removed the rear tire and took the tire off, WHAT THE CRAP???? A TUBE??? All this time I though I had tubeless tires. So the best laid plans of mice and men! The tube was 10 years old and it had just tore, not a hole but about a 1/4 inch slit/jagged hole. I didn't find anything in the tire. I didn't have time to get to bike shop before they closed and none of the other places had the correct size. Yeah I've ordered a couple of tubes. Looks like the ride will be delayed a few more days.

So now I'm just finishing up a Canimao cigar and enjoying some Single Barrel Knob Creek Bourbon on the patio at the cigar lounge. Hope everyone has a Great Mothers Day tomorrow!

Great shave. Love Proraso Red and Green!

Gosh, after all that wok on the bike, you’d better use it lol!

Wow, there must be something wrong in the universe or something. Lots of sub-par straight shaves today...

I hope you get your bike up and running quickly.

Well...considering that there was no stropping pre-shave, it wasn't all that bad! Great mail call, and I've been there with the bike tires...though I chuckled a little when you found out that you were riding tubes. I did the same thing with my tri-bike I had a few years ago....

First of all...will you all stop talking about your straights!

I'm joking, but man I don't know if that is a hole I can fall into right now. I have a straight that is supposedly shave ready, but looking at it, I'm not sure it is and that is something I really don't want to find out by jumping in.

Secondly, KING of OUD!!! Might be my number one soap, aftershave, and scent. I received mine in a Christmas Exchange...Thank You to Jim @WildWest74! Love, love, love that stuff!

Lastly, I think I have had a similar experience with a bike as you. Who knew there were so many ways to inflate a tire. When I was a kid I was constantly replacing and patching tubes from riding my bike in a construction site (they have the best loose dirt/gravel to do power slides). But you sir have inspired me to get my bike ready. My bike has been hanging on some hooks in my garage for almost two years. It is in desperate need to be taken completely apart, cleaned, parts replaced, and lubed. It was a casualty of the flood a couple years ago, but it's too expensive and nice of a bike to just toss it. I am confident I can get it into shape again.

Also, great mail calls.
Thanks Doug! It is strange to me that things like this happen at the same time, so frequently in our group. Anything from scents, to brand names, great shaves, Mr. M visits, sub par shave, ext.

Thanks Josh! It nice to know I'm not the only one that has happened too.

Don did you purchase your straight from a "known" shave ready source? Will it tree top arm hairs? Will it pass HHT (Hanging Hair Test) If there are any doubts there are many here who I'm sure are willing to test it and get it shave ready if necessary for you I'm sure. I'd even offer, but I don't consider myself ready to be honing other peoples razors yet.
I do like the scent form the tub and bottle of the King of Oud!
I really enjoy riding my bicycle. It's great low impact cardio exercise. What I really should do, that I haven't in a while, is sign up for Spinning classes during the winter time.

Nice shave. That is frustrating when things like that happen with the bike.

Huh? Bikes have tubeless tires now??? Are tubes one of those things are kids these days aren't going to know what they are?

I've always wondered about tubeless, but I'm very frugal, you know. Ten years out of a tube is pretty darned good, I'd say!

My bike is still in the shed. I'll get it out soon and tune it up and go for some short trail rides this summer. Time is a precious commodity for me, so no extended rides till next summer.

Thanks Don! Yeah the worst thing is it makes me fell like an idiot.
Nice stuff Craig and great mail call. I used Blue Fougere today. AWESOME!
Thanks Chad! I'll let you know, but it smells awesome!

Possibly.

Yeah I can't complain about the life of the tube at all.

I've been kind of half looking at a tandem bike so I can sit in the back and let SWMBO take me for bicycle rides. That idea didn't even make it out of the hangar to see if it would fly.

When I purchased this bike SWMBO just had to have one also. So about $650 later she has bike, 2 sets of shorts and tops, and a helmet. Number of times she has rode this bike.....1.

I have a nice bike I picked up at a modest price (heavily discounted from an online retailer), its great but i don't think it fits me well enough. I get that classic numbness in the pinkies, sure sign something is off. I have it in the shed and do plan to ride this summer. I forget the exact brand name but I know it starts with and M and is kind of long. The tires are something like 28" (currently flat) but finding tubes at the local shop isn't hard.

My wife has mentioned the tandem bike idea but I am pretty certain she could never pull both our weights so I keep ignoring her request.

Catching up Craig, bikes are fun, but never.... never place clip less pedals on a Mountain Bike before a Mountain trail ride..... Don't ask me why.... lets just say tumbling and bikes while attached don't mix well on a mountain, LOL
