CBLindsay's brain droppings

Good stuff Chris I too have made the same mistake switching up XTG and ATG. No difference here either.

Very intriguing hint. I quit doing XTG passes with anything except the SS. All other shaves I do WTG and 2 passes ATG

I love seeing the all SV shaves. But rose scents disagree with me.

 • CBL Steampunk tuxedo
 • Wild West "peace pipe"
 • Colonial General (feather pro-guard x abunch)
I had planned to use another SV set up but just didn't feel the straight today. No problem, the general is easy to use and the Wild West soap is really, quite nice. The shave was easy but i felt a bit rushed and never put on any particular after shave or spray.

Yes, I am preparing to make what i hope to be an epic batch of soap. I picked up the beef fat trimmings from my butcher and got it cooking down in the crock pot now. I have some different ingredients and add-ins to use and I have some new frags to try. My wife has expressed her strong dislike of my making my own tallow. She feels the stench is too horrible to stand, I dont see what the problem is, i dont smell anything here in my office.

Lol! I was wondering about that. I know living near rendering plants is no picnic. Probably best most of us don’t know what that actually smells like to associate with your soaps.

That's classic right there...but all the same, I'm looking forward to seeing what the Lindsay soap kitchen churns out this time!!

With your normal offerings, I can only imagine what an epic one would entail. Color me curious.

Rubberset 400 TGN finest badger
Long Rifle "Brown Bess"
Jaques LeCouture "Le Dutches"
Long Rifle "Leather Stocking" Aftershave
I got a mail call yesterday that became a major part of today's shave, Long Rifle Soap. The "brown bess" is a new sent in the line-up that is part pipe tobacco and part leather ...and ALL good. I really enjoy a good pipe tobacco scent but they are hard to find, most of the time they tend toward too sweet. The combination of pipe and leather in this soap really work. As with most Long Rifle scents this one is on the weaker side but it's there and you'll know it. I also got a sample of Voyageur soap that smells wonderful. Chris H found his Voyageur had lost a lot of if not all of its scent after a year of use and storage, I admit mine might have diminished but not so much it was gone. This newest sample was quite a bit stronger, either she has increased the scent strength on purpose or fresh is best. Also included in my package was a sample of Leather Stocking after shave. I hate that she sent me this sample because now I know what I am missing by not owning any. The scent is a great scent that punches you in the nostrils for a minute or so before fading to the back ground. The face feel is fairly unique, at 40% alcohol it felt as if I were rubbing liquid silk onto my face. Her recipe includes some aloe and an ingredient I have never seen in aftershave but seems to be a home run...fractionated coconut oil. I really like the Leather stocking scent but i think i will add the Voyageur aftershave to my next order as it is my favorite. ...her take on Bay Rhum is unique too, maybe i should get some of that.

As far as performance goes Long Rifle always impresses me. The lather is a mix of greek yogurt and cool-whip, not airy but not dense ...its "DAiry". The slickness is great and the post shave is great. Depending on how you lather (I prefer loading from the puck and face lathering) you get a little different result but regardless of how you lather this soap provides a unique experience that warrants adding it to your den.

The shave today was pleasant enough but I was a little unhappy with the edge on this razor. It seems plenty sharp by HHT but on the face it felt and performed as if it needed help. I like this razor but i don't look forward to doing a touch up.

Long Rifle is one I want to try. I’m part of the soap passaround on another forum and it’s in the last box, but that will take months to get to me. Don’t see it used a lot, but people seem to like the performance and scent.

Have to agree with your assessment of Long Rifle, Chris. It's one of my favorite soaps, but on aggregate. I have Hawkeye, and I love the scent. The combination of performance and scent is top notch. Sorry to hear that the edge wasn't quite where you wanted it...I haven't tried honing a frameback yet, but can imagine they offer some unique challenges when rubbing steel on stone.

I have all of Long Rifle's soaps except the newer one "thick as thieves" and enjoy them all. As an artisan Amanda is fantastic, she remembers who we are and cares about our experiences. You might recall she sent me a replacement puck of Bay Rhum months after i bought my first, all because Chris H made a comment in his or my journal about how his Bay Rhum wasn't performing as well as he expected...and she isn't even a vendor on the site where our journal entries were made. That's cool.

Honing a frameback can be really easy because they have no shoulders or stabilizers to contend with. This blade has a smile like shape that requires a little different approach, adding to the difficulty is a slight warp near the heal. I find marking the blade and spine with a sharpie before i hit the stones helps show the spots that aren't getting honed and helps me adjust my approach.

I highly recommend adding at least one tin of Long Rifle to your den. Right now they are clearing out the Lavender/Cedar soap and aftershave (it's been discontinued) at very low prices. The soap is only $7 for the 3.5 ounce tin.

Catching up Chris!

Great shaves, reads, and pictures.

I'm sure you have the Jaques LeCouture whipped into shape in no time.

A large batch of CBL soap hmmmmm.

I'm going to work my way through all of the samples you've sent me that I just haven't gotten around to using yet.

Now that’s a nice razor there Walt. I imagine it shaves like a dream.
Thanks Chris, it does shave very well. I only get it out on special occasions. Here is the cousin, same vintage.

Straight Shave #809

 • SV Artisan 2.0
 • Asylum/SV Beta 4.1 "Colonial"H
 • HSB RevNoc 9/16-5/8 hollow
 • Fine Italian Citrus
 • AdP Colonia Intensia
I've got a busy Friday ahead of me and I wanted to look and smell nice. The Asylum Colonial is a great soap with a scent inspired by the classic Italian scent profiles. Funny, i didn't know fruit loops was an Italian scent. I know there is more to the scent but the dominant notes remind me of a bowl of fruit loops. Finishing with Fine Italian Citrus and 2 Vasilli's of AdP Colonia Intensia completed the Italian scent parade.

With a solid lather it was clear the RevNoc needs a little touch up too. What started off feeling impressive ended up feeling like a struggle as the shave went on. I can't help but wonder if my beard is rebelling, this blade should still be performing well.

Meanwhile back at the ranch...
The huge crock pot of beef fat has finally been rendered, leaving me with a couple of containers full of tallow in need of final filtering. The smell has subsided but when I warm the fat to filter it I am sure my wife will rebel, she is showing signs of having reached the limits of her tolerances.

My daughter took and passed her learner's permit test yesterday, soon she will be allowed on the road ...and people will run in fear.

My daughter's Boy Scout Venture Crew has been working for about 8 months to organize our region's Boy Scout Camporee. The Camporee is happening next weekend and things look pretty good. I think they have left somethings a little too unscripted but with a little luck things will go off largely as planned. We have 114 scouts scheduled to attend, about 1/2 to 2/3 of what was initially budgeted for. Fortunately they managed make some shifts in expenditure and stay within the amount of funds they have received. They have a professional videographer coming out (for free) to document the entire event. The plan is for the finished video production to be used for future recruiting AND as an enhancement to their personal resume's and college applications. To add a new and exciting dimension to the video they discussed hiring a drone operator to shoot footage from the sky, but when the budget was cut so was the idea. They don't know it yet but I have hired the guy to show up as originally planned. For those of you who have been to a camporee you know they are kind of a big thing. If not for our 6 crew members doing the work to make it happen, our district would not have had one this year. Making the accomplishment even more stunning is the fact that our Crew is the only one in the district and get NO support or acknowledgment from the "traditional" Boy Scout leaders, in fact they actually got significant push back from several of the old guard leaders who were unwilling to accept the way they plan to run it ...and those troops are the ones that chose not to attend. I tell you, when the council see's the video evidence of the successful execution things are going to get interesting.
