CBLindsay's brain droppings

....Mystic Waters soap is pretty awesome stuff...

Some of the best scents available retail, IMHO. Having used 24 different MW scents (thus far), my personal favorites are: Jasmine, Marrakesh, Vetiver & Oakmoss, and Coconut Sandalwood. I just wish that I could get the performance to consistent "elite" status at my house, but it's still extremely good with a DE or Injector. I take some on the road with me fairly often, and in water that is harder than what I have at home, it's stellar.

Hmm, Vetiver and oakmoss...

Straight Shave #813

  • WD 24mm silvertip
  • Lisa's natural Sample #4
  • Feather ss with pro-guard blade.
  • CFG "Sherlock"
Both yesterday's shave and today's were done with the Feather. Yesterday was a SV Dolomiti day...just plain great stuff. The Dolomiti i have is an older version/batch and is purple in color. I have seen the Black Dolomiti but have not bought any. From what i understand there was a black version early in the line-up before the purple i got and now Black is back. They make no mention of one being a different beta than the other so it may all be in the silt they are using at the time.

Today was test sample #4's first shave test. The test lather last night proved the soap is an easily lathered soap but i struggled this morning. The struggle was a result of me leaving the badger brush too wet when i loaded and things went better when I squeezed out the brush and started over. I won't give much in the way of a review yet but i will say this version pleased me.

The star of the shave was the Feather, man can this thing deliver a great shave. I now have enough experience and comfort with this razor that i can knock out a super fast 3 pass shave even when half asleep. The Pro-guard blade is a game changer for sure, it is super smooth and plenty capable. I didn't object to the regular Pro blades but the SuperPro seemed unnecessary and more trouble than its worth.

On a more personal note, this past monday marked 5 years since my mom died. I was far too busy on Monday to think about it but it really sunk in yesterday. I guess the hardest thing about having lost my mom a bit early is that she is not here to see and participate in the many achievements and milestones. My mom missed seeing and being part of a big part of my kids life and that is sad to me. Loosing a parent kind of forces you to see life a little differently. It may sound odd but i think my mom dying was a necessary part of my learning and development and I am better now because of the experience. Kinda sucks that I had to loose my mom forever to learn and appreciate the things I have but i guess that's how it goes.

So , what did i learn that is so important? How trivial and unimportant SO many things in our life are, and how very important HOW we have lived and how we have treated people throughout our life is.

nice couple of shaves Chris...and very poignant thoughts regarding the loss of your mother. Hope the week steadily gets better for you and yours, Chris.

Nice catch up Chris. 5 years without your mom, that must be very difficult. I am very lucky to have both my parents still here. The thought of losing either of them is very hard to comprehend. You seem to have a very positive outlook on the whole thing.

I feel for ya, CBL. The loss of a parent is tough. But one a bright note, I like your sentiments about the trivial things in life and the "How" we live our lives.

Very nice thoughts Chris. Sorry for your loss. My Dolomiti is not purple but grey in color. I didn’t realize there was another type.

Right? It's wonderful. I love Michelle's soaps. She scents them so well. My favorites are many. Cedar & Sage, Lily of the Valley (My personal favorite), Rosalimon, and Poggio Dei Pini.

And dangit.... I just looked at her site, and there's some new scents I have to try.... Leather & Smoke and Bergamot, Cedarwood & Juniper.

I can't imagine what it is like to lose a parent. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Straight Shave #814

SV Artisan 2.0 26mm Badger
PannaCrema Nuavia "red"
Genco Easy Aces
Royall Vetiver

Last night I took the Easy Aces to the stones for a little enhancement. The edge was already mighty fine but i wanted to see if I could kick it up a notch by giving the steel a bit more time on the stones. I polished the two coti's and the trans ark with my 0.10 FeOX and .25 diamond encrusted "pete stone" then did a number of water only laps with light pressure then finished on leather. The visual results were hard to judge but the shaving results were pretty nice.

**the "pete stone" is a glass tile with a strip of vintage wool cloth affixed to it then loaded with some high grit goodies. The wool cloth is also referred to as the "labrax carpet" because the fabric was an antique store find made by Pete a.k.a. Labrax.***

It has been a while since i used the PannaCrema Nuavia, boy is this stuff nice. Loading and lathering is a breeze and the lather is exquisite. The PC lather and the Easy Aces edge made for a very close and comfortable shave in 3 simple passes. The ease of lathering and the speed of the blade made for a quick shave.

Nuavia Red has a unique scent that I didn't even try to match, i just grabbed the Royall Vetiver and went with that.

Great shave Chris...have to agree on the scent of Rossa. Very unique, but wonderful scent structure.

Thanks Chris. Some of the things you speak of I am still working through. Being an orphan is not easy.

Looks like there is a few us walking that path now. Time passing can be a lonely mistress

Catching up Chris!

Great reads and shaves!

My dad passed away almost 15 years ago. I still think about him all the time, specifically on special days.

Had a very busy weekend helping the Crew run the CIEC High Desert district Camporee. Pretty amazing job done by 6 kids age 15-18. I’ve posted here a video from Friday nights flag retirement. The caller is my daughter, she has participated in ceremonies before but not called them. Taps is being played by one of my scouts I have known for many years. This young man was part of the Rose Parade Honor band this year. I don’t think you’ll hear a better version.
