Finally got in some shaves with a few of the CBL Premium Tallow based soaps. I would like to thank the generosity of a member here,
@Dave in KY for the very generous sample of Tobacco and nearly a full tub of the Madagascar Spice soaps. The Oud Mineral was part of the TSC brush package. A big thank you my friend...
First was Madagascar Spice. Somewhat of a spicey Ginger like scent with a touch of floral, citrus and musk vibe to it. What it actually has for fragrance oils I haven’t a clue but, that’s what my shnozzz perceived to pick up. I used this particular soap for 4 consecutive shaves this past week using a OneBlade, Gillette Old Type and the Ascension. Used about an almond sized dollop of soap for those shaves and it created a very nice lather that was rich and dense and provided a nice amount of slickness and protection while providing a nice aroma once I started applying the lather. The usual three pass shave with each of the razors mentioned and they all glided across my face without a hitch. Post was quite good, a bit drying though to be honest but, it was soft and supple. Not once did I get a nic, cut, weeper or receive any irritation from the soap and it’s performance. It delivered real good results.
Next up was Cut Tobacco. Same razors as mentioned above and I got in 3 shaves with it. The scent notes I got out of it were a spice like flower tobacco, some oud and almost a rum like type vibe. A dark, semi resinous accord with a nice sweetness to it. I liked this one also though not as much as Madagascar. Same sized dollop and off to building. One thing I forgot to mention is that these CBL soaps can take some water. They are thirsty and don’t mind the extra H2O to get them where you’d like them. I prefer fully hydrated lathers, very close to the breaking point without crossing the line. Ultimate glide & slickness is my goal in every soap. Same 3 passes that were all comfortable and protective. But, again on post shave it left my face rather dry, even more so than the Madagascar soap. No irritation or reaction to the soap, just a very dry like feeling and no supple softness to the touch. Some Humphreys and LEA cured that and gave me the finishing touch on a nicely hydrated face.
In a nutshell, the soaps performed very well in terms of lather, protection, glide and slickness with a nice amount of ressidual slickness as well. Most of the buffing and touch ups was done with whatever soap was remaining on my face. The only thing that was not up to par for me was the post shave results. A very dry feeling that I’ve never experienced before except perhaps with Williams and MdC to some degree. A shame really because, other than that they performed extremely well for me in all other facets. Coincidentally, I really did not get much of a dry feeling with the Oud Mineral. It was as good as the other 2, just the scent was not much to my liking. If it weren’t for the post shave results that I had, these soaps would have been up there with some of my top performers. Unfortunately, my face drying out excludes these 2 particular soaps from getting there and the Oud Mineral was not a scent I liked though performance was very, very good.
Again, thanks to my main man Dave for making this happen. I owe you one bud......
On a side note, if anyone would like to try either one of these, just pm me and we’ll go from there........
