CBL Premium Soaps

Unfortunately that particular soap base won’t harden up with baking in the sun. It MAY, but don’t hold your breath. The softness comes from the ratio of hard to soft fats and the high super fat content not a high water content. The vetiver scent and the cherry blossom bamboo scent are both painfully soft because of the soft fat issue and made worse I fear because the maxing out of the fragrance oils.
I wish I could pick apart or vigorously “defend” against the ‘negatives’ pointed out by @Bogeyman but I personally share those same issues with the vetiver and the cherry blossom bamboo scent. ...yet many of you absolutely love both of those. I think they are great performers but on the scent and firmness they miss the mark.

I have adjusted the formula to allow the additional of hemp oil while maintaining the type of firmness I expect (although I wouldn’t mind firmer still) but the type and amount of essential or fragrance oils used to scent may still impact texture.

Thanks for the honest review bogeyman

I used the CBL Vetiver again today after letting it harden up a tad for a week uncovered. With no blooming it only took a few swirls with a damp YaQi Mew Brown (Synbad) synthetic brush to get a great lather. I get a little more vetiver than before, but still it needs help. Regardless, I got a really, really great shave. This soap is easily a "standing triple" and just to reiterate all it needs is hardened up a bit and better scent to be a home run. The lather is top shelf with superb cushion & glide. (y)😉

Big thank you to my man, @Dave in KY for the huge CBL soap samples that he sent to me. They came in early last week but, I had some personal matters to attend to. So, I've put in some shaves with three soap samples so far, Dragons Blood, Black Rose Oud & Ghost lime. And I will say that all three have performed at a very high level. So far they've given me very minimal skin dryness if any at all with the Ghost Lime being the best on my face as of yet. Lather, glide and slickness have been the usual with CBL, which is excellent. Scent wise the 3 have been very good but, the Black Rose Oud has been my favorite so far. A wonderful blend of the Rose and the Oud is a bit more prominent once the lather is built, just an amazing scent. Looking forward to going through the rest of them and see what shakes out. More posts coming soon....

Both the Russian Tea & Iron Throne performed just like the previous samples of the CBL Premium soaps. But, the winner of these two for me was the Russian Tea. I just loved the scent and the development of those scents during the lathering and shave process. A cinnamon like type vibe with a semi sweet herbal like tea aroma. Intoxicatingly good honestly. To me at least it was. The Iron Throne is a very green and herbaceous type scent that’s similar to a Fougere. Fresh and almost lemongrass like while building and applying the lather. I detect a bit of a floral note but, can’t put my finger on it as my nose fails to define it. But, a very nice and green forward scent. Post were actually quite good with both just a bit of dryness with the Iron Throne and hardly any with the Russian Tea. Has to be something in some of the soaps that give me a bit more of a dried skin feeling over others. I don’t know as I’m at a loss to find out what it may be.

More to come.....

Interesting that ANY are drying to you as they are one of 3 for me that are the most moisturizing post shave but it is what it is. I assume you're doing a side by side comparison on those razors. Nice setups Gus

Great looking setups!

I don't know what's the deal to be honest Dave. The Ghost Lime, Black Rose Oud & the Russian Tea were actually quite good on skin conditioning and leaving my skin soft to the touch and certainly better than some of the others. I have no allergies or reactions to essential or fragrance oils that I know of. It feels like leaving an alum pass on and not rinsing it off with some. I'm at a loss because everywhere else these soaps bring it and go toe to toe with some of the best in my possession.

And correct. I'm doing an adjustable razor shave match up on another forum. Maybe I'll do a copy and paste and start it up here. We'll see....

Gus we all have differing things chemically etc so I don't doubt it. Your experience is YOUR experience. Just bummed for you buddy. 👍

You've got me stumped regarding the drying feeling you get from the CBL soaps, since it is pretty consistent from sample to sample it has to be something more than a fragrance oil. After giving it some thought I may have an idea as to what might be the culprit ...although it is just a stab in the dark. Since the soap has plenty of good oils and butters in it and fairly mild and is well aged AND is not generally known as a drying soap, it is reasonable to assume the soap isn't drying in and of itself. CBL soap is made with a good amount of glycerin and glycerin is excellent at attracting water, which is why it is used in so many cosmetics and soaps, but it has a dark side. If you rub glycerin on your skin and don't add water to the mix, it will draw water from your skin and from the air. It is possible the relatively high glycerin content is drawing moisture from your skin making you feel dry. If this is the case you can solve the problem by adding more water to the lather. CBL soap can take a pretty good amount of water, perhaps adding a little more water to the lather OR rinsing with water between passes then face lathering will change the feel. ...again, stab in the dark. There are other soaps with high glycerin contents you might compare to, LNHC is one that comes to mind. LNHC is full of all the good stuff to make your skin happy and has a lot of glycerin too, if you use her newer soap and feel dry it could be the glycerin.

You might be on to something there. The CBL soaps are definitely on the thirsty side of the soap spectrum. I'll give it a go on my next shave and will make the extra effort to up the H2O content in my next lather. (y)

I have to agree with you about the glycerin. I was involved in the vaping industry for awhile and one thing we always told people was to drink lots of water because the high amounts of glycerin in vaping products dried you out extremely fast. Glycerin in large content Will dehydrate you very quickly. So i could very easily see it making the skin feel dry..people would always say there skin felt dry and one of my recommendations was to always say drink lots of water And face splash with water and other areas that felt dry.

It's just an educated guess, It is also possible CBL soap is just going to feel more drying than other soaps ...can't win them all. I know I personally have occasions where I have that dry feel throughout the shave (with a variety of soaps) and it usually is the result of dryer weather and lazy prep and lathering on my part.

Still, what you're saying does make some sense to me in that perhaps I could be off on the water to soap ratio. I just might be nailing it on a couple and just be off just that tiny bit on some others. It's worth a shot as the soaps do perform at a high level everywhere else. It can be just all on me being slightly off with water content. Well, at least that's what I'm hoping for... I'll post my results in the coming days.
