Bourbon Country Shave Journal - Dave in KY

Friday November 30, 2018

Razor: Asylum Rx
Blade: Feather Pro Guard (7)

Brush: Paladin 26 mm Lime Lotus

Soap: Grooming Department Earl Grey Gelato

Aftershave 1: Nivea 2 in 1 Aftershave

Aftershave 2: Skin Bracer

1st shave was with the sample sent from Grooming Department as I was curious about the Duck Fat soap and it smelled GREAT !! Great rich and slick lather with awesome skin feel properties but unfortunately for me I had a skin reaction to it and now wish I didn't put it in my only new tub left from Stirling...............Although I finished the 3 passes with it, I'm Frustrated and hope the other 4 tubs I have treat me better........

Day off today. Have a great day Cadre !!!!!

Well that blows about the reaction. Seems like a pretty mild scent for that to happen with.

Sorry about the reaction. I know I am in the minority but I ranked Grooming Dept a low Tier 1 borderline tier 2 soap. It just didn't wow me. I don't get the hype on that soap. Hope the others treat you well. Some of the new scents though do sound nice.

Thanks Chad and I hear you about the hype. Great soap but at the moment although I enjoyed the lather and obviously it deserves more experimenting with an nonirritating scent I am happier with CBL soaps then this. Time will tell whether it comes up some in ratings for me.

It's interesting because people say the same thing about THB. These soaps that aren't elite, but have a cache about them because of availability. Curious, could it be they were elite when people got hooked and kept the excitement rolling? Right now I don't think I'd stop buying A&E or Storybook even if better stuff came along.

Bummer about the irritation. With that and the GF blades, it’s been a rough couple of shaves.

Did you notice any funk from the duck tallow? Have a great day off.

No funk from the chunk (and I mean chunk) he sent. Gonna give another chance after face heals from the GF

i am going to have to try the duck fat soaps one day, the thought intrigues me. I hope the others treat you better.

I had that WCS Campfire, I agree it is straight up campfire (wet coal more than smoke) but I found it impossible to lather. I ended up using it in the shower as a body bar. I understand they (WCS) have arranged to have another artisan make soaps for them...great move on their part.

Last night I mixed up some pineapple cilantro & Banana with the dual ghost blend. It was a little light in the banana but the resulting scent and ghost effect was fresh and fun. I will make sure you get some of this blend and some ghost banana soon.

Thanks Chris, that sounds great. Still not sure if it was the soap or after effects from the Graham Field blade. Still have the prickly pain felt earlier when I rub my face, so it may be follicle damage from that blade. May try the Earl Grey Gelato again after skin feels better. I'll get a sample of it and the Mallard Kulfi off to you when it gets in for you to try it if you want?

I would tend to agree that your irritation may be more related to the blade than the soap. If you are able to send a sample of duck fat soap I would love some.
