Bourbon Country Shave Journal - Dave in KY

Great shave, read, and picture Dave!

That's a great looking razor and GTB for the win!

Razor: Timeless .68 Open Comb/Scalloped
Blade: Pol Silver SI (2)
Brush: Rubberset 400 Synthetic Knot
Soap: Stirling Black Cherry
Aftershave:Humphreys / Pinaud Clubman

I LOVE the scent of the Black Cherry - intoxicating. Another smooth shave with the Timeless and can tell this setup is perfect for me. Glad I took my time zeroing in on the right combination before buying. 1 little nick below my nose where I have a scar from an old injury. Fought with a huge metal shade in high school the teacher had me jerk the chord for to lower. Lowered the whole shade off it's mounts towards my face. I catch it every so often when shaving to remind me of that day in 1979 and the cute school nurse.

Nice write-up and picture Dave. Nice touch with the salamander front and center! Is that the glacial version of the Black Cherry?

Nice shave, read, and picture Dave!

So the shade memory is a bitter sweet one huh?

Razor: Gillette Psycho Tech Razor
Blade: Pol Silver SI (3)
Brush: Yaqi 24mm Synthetic
Soap: Chiseled Face Midnight Stag
Aftershave 1: Thayers Cucumber Witch Hazel
Aftershave 2: Pinaud Clubman Citrus Musk

Felt a little crazy today so decided to go with the Gillette Psycho Tech. Have some samples from Chiseled Face that scents weren’t really for me just smelling in container but thought, Why not give it a lather and see. So Midnight Stag was todays. I’m not good at picking scents to review and so you may not want to go by my picks. I either like it or don’t. This one is ok but not one I would buy although I LOVE their soaps and own several I will ALWAYS have in the den. This is a darker manly scent is what I would say and lathered fine and gave a great smooth shave. Had a ton of lather that I treated my face to a coat of as I cleaned up. I don’t normally do this but there was a bunch and today thought “Why not?” Some Thayers and topped off with some Clubman Citrus Musk.

Hope everyone has a Great day and Shave !!!

Nice psycho shave today Dave, and once again, nice lather porn! Midnight Stag was one that I absolutely couldn't stand at first, but eventually got to the point where I could deal with it, but won't ever make it a purchase.

Love the Psycho! I might pull mine out of retirement to shave with this week! I know there are just Techs...but I think there are a pretty decent shaver!

Good shave Dave!

Thanks for that info. I’ve seen Psychos before, but didn’t know where to place them on the performance scale!

So I BLAME you Cadre, yes YOU for making the straight shaving look so easy. Kudos to you straight shavers. I nearly 10 years ago got into what we call “wet shaving” or “Traditional Shaving” with DE’s and eventually straights for a short time. I still have some straights but went back to DE’s after a short time due to ease of use without being able to see “the shave” or the blade while shaving. Have an astigmatism and can’t see but blurr close up when shaving. Fast forward to watching the video shaves of all of you and I think I should give the Feather ACSS my brother sent me a shot. Some days before a shave day with a little stubble forming, I would grab it and do a few strokes dry without anything and cut stubble and think I should give it a shot again.I didn’t consider that at those moments my glasses were on my face……….

Today I decide to give it a try properly. I even did more prep then I normally do to assist. Did a glycerin pre-shave wash. Lathered and picked up the razor. As I bring towards my face I had a sense of uneasiness……..what’s the problem……. what’s the difference………. You can’t see stupid !!!. Took a couple careful swipes and felt a decent dig, so halted and went to the Rockwell 6s to finish. I took a quick pic at that stage before finishing the shave.

Yep as the blood started and I could see I actually had 2 spots releasing the red stuff. Oh well, it’s just not for me. I do still have some straights from those prior days including some from my old barber that has died. Don't know how long I'll hold on to them all. Here's my 1st I used back in the day a Black Diamond as well as what was my favorite Boker. Also a Henckels 415

So despite the encouragement I know you will all offer, I know I am to remain a DE shaver while jealously watching you guys shave with those gorgeous straights. That’s okay. Uneventful and smooth shaves is the goal after all and I get that almost automatically with DE’s. Thanks for reading and commenting in my journal and hope you all have a GREAT day !!

Yeow, that's a decent cut you got there. I think they will just tell you that toughens the skin for future straight shaving ?

I also have an astigmatism and shave with my glasses on. It does present some challenges when straight shaving, but I work around them.

Also, don't worry if straight razors aren't for you. DEs are great. This just means that you can put the money you would spend on straights into high-end DEs.
