The Williams Mug Soap 3017 Challenge..... A.K.A. (________) Willy!

Alrighty I think I have the Willy figured out (phrasing?). Generous and very hot bloom water for 15+ minutes (aka shower time). Whip out and almost dry the boar brush. Save off the bloom water (I usually use it on my face as a pre-shave, but not for this) and use to build lather later. Load for 60 seconds (actually time it). Spackle the thick paste that was loaded, on to the face and build the lather off that with the bloom water. Rock on with an awesome shave.

Yep! Most soaps I load for 20-30 seconds. Williams always gets 45-60 seconds.
That's exactly where I am too. 60-70 seconds

Nice, I'm starting to get why so many people have an affinity for modern Williams. It's really a decent soap, just not well scented.

I don't mind the original scent, but I'd agree with it being a quite decent soap.

I've done a few 4th passes with my recently honed Gold Dollar 66 (yes 4th pass, after my standard "one blade challenge" full 3 pass shave as not to cheat on the challenge), to test it out and make sure it is truly ready for the buddy to whom it will be PIFF'd, and modern Williams is so very slick and the lack of super dense lather is actually quite nice for an SR shave.

Yes, I've shaved with a straight every day for the last 6 days and with the exception of the first two days, I've had great shaves. The slickness has never been a problem whatsoever!

Razor: RR GC .84p
Blade: Wilkinson Sword (6)
Brush: Stirling Boar
Soap: Bootlegger Willie
AS: Clubman (original)

This soap...so I changed a few things tonight. After seeing a few recommendations from @Spider @OpusX and @Luecke3262 I did the following:
  • Bloomed the soap for about 15-20 minutes
  • Switched to a boar brush and after letting the brush soak, I shook it out until it was just a little damp
  • Extended the load time. I did a 60 second count, but it probably closer to 2 minutes
  • Used the bloom water when adding water to the brush to build the soap
The result was a much improved, but still lacking, initial lather. It was much less airy than it has been and was still very slick, but still not on par with what I’m used to with other soaps. Each lather before the remaining passes got progressively worse. By the last pass it was back to disappearing on me, but I was able to get through it. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.

If it dissapears on you (aka dries) just give the brush tips a tiny dip of water and then run a painters brush pass on the area to shave. The thinnest wet layer of Williams still makes for a good slick shave, which I have found impressively surprising.

Been getting great shaves here too. only missed the one shave last thursday so far. Lathers have been pretty decent as well. not spectacular but decent. should be no problem using this till it is gone.

Another day with the Willy and I am confident I'll finish the 3017 challenge. I think the lather I'm getting is as good as she gets from this setup and it is more than fine.

On a side note I did randomly pick up another puck this morning while grabbing some weekly lunch items for the office and found a new surprise on the local shelf.

THE VEG! I didn't need another bottle, but I snagged one anyway so the inventory system says "hey...people at 0600CST like to buy this along with yogurt and protein bars...". I am a statistical anomaly 🤓 .

What I love about this 3017 of Williams tradition is the fact that it helps illustrate that even though it may not be lather porn levels of yogurt on your face, Williams is slick as snot and can provide an excellent shave when dialed in. Combine that with the fact that pucks can be sourced extremely cheaply and scented with all the various after shave splashes, and you've got one more-than-serviceable puck of shave soap!

Do we ever need another bottle? I swear sometimes I get stuff I have multiples of - just in case the Zombie apocalypse happens and I have it - just to be safe
