The Wild West Show - Jim's Shaving Journal

I for one am shocked that you haven't grabbed a tub yet.

No longer an issue...just pulled the trigger on 5.

So jealous! I've been listening to Trampled by Turtles a lot lately.

Thanks, Don! They are playing with The Revivalists. I have enjoyed TBT for about 8 years now.

Awesome shave Jim...I think I'm going to have to break down and buy me some of that WWSW. Might take a cue from you and get a container to put it in, however.

Glad to hear that the tire situation got resolved with as little hassle as possible.

Thanks, Josh! I actually really like the small cans, but with so much of my signature soap I wanted something special.

Jim's back!

Yes I am! Mua ha ha ha!

Good to see you posting again Jim. Good shave. WWSC never disappoints me with performance either.

Thanks, TJ! It is hands down my favorite soap, without question.

That's the spirit! Which ones did you grab?

Nice shave Jim. James & Artemus is a great scent. The tire sensor on the right rear tire of a van at work went wonky, and that stupid alarm went off about every 10 seconds until it was fixed lol.

Great shave and read Jim!

Great to see you back posting again!

Nice effect on the picture! Glad the tire ordeal wasn't that much of a pain!

Thanks, Eric! I am glad I am not alone in loving this scent, LOL. And I can imagine how much fun the sensor issue could be. I get a mild panic attack whenever I hear the "ding" from my dashboard.

Good stuff Jim

Thanks, Dave!

Great shave and read.

Thanks, Doug!

Thanks, Craig! I love playing around with apps for my photos. This app is called Artisto.

Special Reserve No 2
Rose Dunn
Aces & Eights
Doc Holliday
Gin & Tonic

Ooh, those should be nice! I have tried samples of Aces & Eights and Doc Holliday, both are nice. I have the Special Reserve which I love, as well as the Rose Dunn. I got it for SWMBO, but I like it enough to use it myself.

Great shave Jim. I have been looking at those for a while. I will pull the trigger sooner rather than later.

Straight Shave #77: “Don’t Stop Me Now“
Brush: Raven Brush Works “Willow Wolf”
Soap: Wild West Shaving Co. Little Bighorn
Razor: Jerry Stark Custom Steampunk
Aftershave: Vintage Avon Wild Country – Colt 1851 Revolver

When I went back and counted, I realized that my total number of straight shaves has not even hit the century mark! Which is odd, because I feel so dialed in whenever I use an open blade, be it straight razor or shavette. I was really lucky to have support from you all back when I started, because I think it helped me get very good very quickly. In any case, I was putting together a nice SOTD setup specifically to try and nail a good picture. Russell is asking folks to share their SOTD photos with Wild West Shaving Co. soaps and Raven Brush Works brushes with the hashtag #WWSCRBWSOTD2018 and he is giving some pretty nice prizes to the winners. I thought the Stark needed to come out to play, and I was not disappointed in either the photo or the shave!

The Little Bighorn soap is one of several scents that really hits my happy button. It’s a great blend of leather, vetiver, black pepper, citrus, and musk. Very sharp and clean, and I whipped up my lather in the Captain’s Choice bowl with about 1 tablespoon and a half of water, leaving me with the perfect consistency and slickness for my straight shave. This edge is fresh, so no stropping beforehand, although I did finish with 30 on linen and 50 on horsehide.

I would say it’s like riding a bike, but riding a bike does not come with the added risk of slicing open your face. That being said, the Stark blade is beyond compare, and the smile gives me a level of control that I cannot get with any other razor. The heavy grind, coupled with a wickedly sharp edge geometry, gives me the most buttery soft feel against my skin, and the whiskers just get wiped away. I did two passes with some jawline cleanup, and I got full BBS on the cheeks and jawline, with BBS- on the neck. The hollows are easier to go sideways with this razor, but I didn’t want to chase it too much. Of course, no irritation is also a plus.

I don’t normally break out an aftershave when using WWSC, but I recently got this Colt 1851 Revolver decanter of Avon Wild Country, and it was too perfect not to include in the photo. I just dabbed a little for the scent (flashbacks to Christmas as a kid when I always got some Avon from my grandmother!), and it complemented the Little Bighorn nicely. Hopefully Russ enjoys the photo, because I will always take an extra brush and some soaps, lol!

Should be an easy weekend for just SWMBO and I. I already mowed the lawn on Wednesday, so no big chores on deck. Maybe some grilling will be in order! Hope you all have a terrific weekend as well.

Today’s song is my “good morning, get started” anthem, originally recorded by Queen. This version is by the singer who recorded Freddie’s live vocals for the upcoming film:

One of these days I'm going to have to order a Stark!

Yes, Chris, you really need to!

Great shave Jim. Beautiful Stark! Do you have an unfiltered picture of it?

Thanks, Chris! You mean like this?

Good work today Jim. I think this photo just might need to be used

Thanks, Chad! I think it came together nicely.

Great shave Jim, and great picture of the WWSC gear!

Thanks, Josh! Now I have to convince SWMBO I should make a shave video with this razor.
