The Wild West Show - Jim's Shaving Journal

Thanks for all the encouragement, gentlemen!

The past month or two has been crazy. We were going through a contract recompete at work, and it really came down to the last possible moment. We finally were awarded a new 5 year contract, but the overall process took a toll on our team. We lost four out of seven people who decided it was too risky to wait it out and ended up applying for and accepting jobs with other companies. So now there are three of us left (one is a brand new hire), doing the same amount of work as when there were seven of us. Luckily, we are pretty good at what we do, so the stress level never really gets too high now on a day to day basis.

On top of that, MIL and FIL were in the process of moving from the house they have owned for about 28 years, to a new home just over the border in NC, about 27 miles away. So there was a huge process of clearing out the old house, storing items while the house was being sold, and then moving them down to the new house once it was finished. SWMBO and I just helped them move all but about 5 things down to the house this weekend, and we earned every ache and pain that we are now feeling.

On the shaving front, I haven’t been too inspired to document much, not because the shaves aren’t great, but because the results are rock solid every time! I have been using Doc Holliday (my Asylum RX SE) with a Feather Pro Guard. No matter what soap I pull out, I have been getting a 2.5 pass BBS every time. I usually shave on Saturday mornings after a shower, and was blown away by how this razor just wipes through everything without tugging or causing any nicks. I could make time for an evening shave every now and then, but the week-growth shaves are just so damn enjoyable. Now I will never run out of soap, darn it!

My biggest news is the procedure coming up in the next week and a half. Back in 2014, SWMBO and I were both enrolled in the surgical weight loss program at Sentara, and were both candidates for a sleeve gastrectomy. With my ongoing struggles with successful weight loss, coupled with joint pain and sleep apnea, this was something that was going to be a great tool for me. I agreed that no matter what, I would make sure SWMBO got her surgery first, and I would have mine once she recovered. Well, lo and behold, less than a month before her surgery, I landed the job I have now. So, while she was still covered to get hers, there was no way I could justify taking the medical leave so soon after taking a new job. SWMBO got her surgery and has been very successful.

Fast forward to my last work trip back in November. I was running out of breath just walking quickly from one gate to another at the airport. I knew it was time to get back on track. I was able to get back in the program in February, and just recently completed all the prerequisites for my insurance to cover the surgery. I am scheduled to have the procedure on Sep 6, and then the real work begins. SWMBO and I are making good plans for the foods we will keep in the house, and making realistic plans for exercising together. I currently pack 345 pounds onto my 6’3” frame, and am ready to shed this extra person. I look forward to sharing my journey here, even if it is not so much shave related. Many of you have inspired me in many ways, so hopefully this will be something folks will enjoy.

Anyway, time to catch up on more journals!

Great write-up Jim and congrats on being accepted in for the upcoming surgery. Glad to hear that the craziness is starting to wind down for you and SWMBO, and that your shaves have been predicable and stellar!

Thanks, Josh! I sometimes consider grabbing a different razor just to see if I can make it riskier, but by the time I am ready to shave the RX just jumps into my hand.

Great post Jim! Congrats, and good luck on the surgery. No worries about the lack of shaving in your journal. Honestly, if a journal entry is entirely shaving related, I just skim it. I'm much more interested in the personal stories and insights. So, if you take the time to tell me more about yourself, I'm going to read it! Look forward to hearing about your progress.

Wow Jim! There has been a lot going on! Sometimes that is what life dishes out to us...a lot. But it sounds like you have been handling things just fine. I'm glad you are taking care of yourself! I was in a similar position to you not all that long ago. I was 6'3" 330 pounds. I was getting winded doing routine tasks and health issues were creeping up! I've lost over 60 pounds so far and the body has changed drastically. Do what you have to do to get healthy...you will enjoy life more and live longer. Nothing but encouragement for you here brother!

Great update Jim! Sounds like a lot of things going on, a lot of positive things thankfully!

Keep is updated on the procedure. Prayers for you!

Thanks, KJ! Hopefully my entries will be chock full of insights, both good and bad.

You will be successful in this endeavor - I have no doubt about it!

Thanks, Chris. The support means a lot.

Thanks, Don! Your story has been inspiring to me as well. And I know that we are never given more than we can handle, so I definitely got this.

Thanks, Chris! The prayers are appreciated.

Best of luck with your procedure my friend. I'm not nearly as tall as you but on the bulk loss trek as well. WE will all be successful. I am confident!

No shave since the weekend, but I wanted to share some more about how things are going.

Today I start my protein full liquid diet. With one week to go before my surgery, they have me on a liquid diet that includes things like yogurt, strained soups, sugar free pudding, broth, and all the low calorie drinks that I want. I am allowed up to 60g of protein a day, so it will be more satisfying than a clear liquid diet. The purpose is apparently to shrink the liver prior to surgery to make it easier to move out of the way.

Luckily I had a great afternoon yesterday and am going into this knowing that I have everything on the right track.

I have never shared this on the forum, but back in 2000, before I became a MUSician, I was a MAGician. I learned many card tricks and street magic illusions that I would perform for my coworkers at my old cube-farm job. I got pretty good, and I always had fun. Once I got into music, that tapped into the same love of performing, and kind of took over my time.

Well, with my recent "retirement" from regular bar gigs, I have gotten back into my magic, and I still can pull off some pretty good tricks. There are also a lot more resources than there were 18 years ago, so I have tapped into some pretty useful stuff. Well, yesterday after my haircut I showed a couple tricks to my barber. After the first one he was so excited he had to call his family on Facetime so they could watch another trick. That one got even better reactions, especially from the kids on the phone. I was so happy that I got to give them a fun little show. And as I was getting ready to leave, the barber (who owns a couple of shops) said he really wants to get together and have me come to the shop and perform for the customers. So, I have something to really look forward to after the recovery.

Thanks for reading, everyone! Have a great day!

Nice post Jim, and thanks for sharing. Good to hear that you're scratching the performance itch with the magic! Good luck with the upcoming surgery!

Good luck with the liquid diet. Really awesome that you’ve still got the “magic touch”!

Thanks, Josh! Both music and magic have really helped me discover how much I enjoy making people happy.

Jim great update post. You are in my prayers!

Thanks, Chad!

What?? You’re going to post magic videos for us? That’s awesome!

Maybe if someone videos a performance, lol! SWMBO still rolls her eyes when I ask her to watch a new trick. If I started making videos she would never stop ragging on me.

Thanks, Chris! I can eat almost all the sugar free pudding I can handle, plus I stocked up on nonfat greek yogurt. So as long as I plan ahead I will be able to keep my belly from feeling empty.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Awesome indeed!

Glad that the contract was won Jim. So far this year I am 0/7 with four still outstanding. Good luck with the procedure, recovery and the new life that it all will bring. No shortage of weight being lost in this group I can tell ya.

I too am no stranger to some card tricks and sleight of hand. I usually keep a deck of cards on me, for when I'm bored at work. And have a few card trick that I'm known for. I watch a few YT channels to try to learn some new stuff. I just wish I had the time to practice at home more and get better.

Today I start my protein full liquid diet.
