Steve's Journal: The Saga Continues....

Shave Time!

Razor:
Fatboy
Blade: Voskhod (?)
Brush: Stirling Boar
Soap: RR Santal Royale
AS: Aqua Velva Ice Blue

Really switched things up today for the first shave back after using the Assured razor and blade. I grabbed the Fatboy loaded with a Voskhod and 2 new items to the den. This was the first spin with my new Stirling Boar brush and last night I grabbed a bottle of Aqua Velva Ice Blue from Rite Aid.

The Fatboy is still giving me trouble on the neck, but not above the jawline for some reason. I guess I just can't find the angle. I also should probably try a different blade. At this point I have no idea how many shaves are on any of the blades currently loaded in my razors. I'm sure I could go back through my journal and figure it out, but I'm lazy.

The Stirling Boar is the first boar brush I've ever used. My initial thoughts are that it definitely has more backbone than any of my other brushes, and is much softer on the face than I thought it would be. It shed a ton on it's first lather, at least 7 hairs, so hopefully that stops. I didn't really get any kind of an animal funk off of it, but I didn't at first with my Wild West Brushworks badger either. So after my shave I left it lathered up in a bowl to soak all day. I'll probably use this for the next few shaves to get better acquainted with it.

The Aqua Velva was surprisingly good too. I'm awful at describing scents and picking out notes, but I can for sure that I got a slight powder note mixed with maybe a musk. I dunno lol, either way it was pleasant. It also contains some menthol, but nothing like what is offered by most artisan AS splashes offered. It is a very light and short lived menthol sensation, but again, pleasant. The strength on the scent isn't very strong, and not very long lasting. About 4 hours later all I can smell is the Santal Royale scent from the soap.

Overall the shave was weird. Definitely comfortable during the process. Anything would be after those ATG passes with the Assured. But the result was BBS above the jawline and DFS- below. The difference has to be technique related I would assume. I might go back to the Rockwell tomorrow. We'll see what happens.

In Other News....

The wife is coming down with something again. She had a fever, a cough, and body aches last night. Sounds flu-like but hopefully just a cold that passes quick. I had to run out to get her some cold medicine last night and that's when I snuck in the bottle of Aqua Velva. Sneaky ?.

Willie World:

Willie is happy that his momma stayed home with him today so he could snuggle on the couch in some blankets. It's still in the 20's here, although next week it will hit the high 50's. This weather is weird!

AV lasts a while for me, but it’s mostly the powdery scent that lingers longest, easily overpowered by the strength of the Santal Royale.

Sorry to hear the missus isn’t feeling well. I guess that worked out for you though lol!

Thanks Chris. Yeah the powder note was all I was getting after the initial application. I also didn’t use quite as much splash as I normally do so maybe that’s why it didn’t last.

Weird shave. Speaking of drug stores, have you seen Nivea shave cream (I think it’s cream) in a tub? I saw it in CVS the other day, they had 2. But I failed to take a pic.

Actually I think I did see some last night. Off the top of my head I remember seeing Brut, Aqua Velva, Clubman, and a Rite Aid brand version of Aqua Velva aftershave splashes. 3 different versions of Nivea aftershave balms, Rite Aid brand DE blades, and styptic pencils. A few tubes of Cremo shave cream. And I believe some Nivea shave cream. All in all not bad for a corner drug store. Oh they also carry the Micro Touch One Razor.

Thanks guys. I have bloodwork scheduled for tomorrow so they can check for potential thryroid issues (runs in the family). I still have to make an appointment with a cardiologist, but my primary doctor said he’ll probably make me wear a heart monitor for 24 hours and possibly do an echo cardio gram. My primary doctor seems to think it’s nothing to be concerned with, but because I have a family history of heart problems he wants me to get everything checked.

I got dehydrated really bad in some intense heat while wearing a fully weighted back pack. Once I got out of the heat I drank a lot of cold water, took a cold shower and it caused my heart to do what you describe. I went to the ER and was having several PVC (preventricular contractions) every minute or so. I did the beta blocker thing and followed up with a cardiologist who did a stress test. I hated the stress test. I was in super great shape at the time and they had that treadmill dang near 90 degrees to get my heart rate up and then the doc makes you lay down on a table - hated that because you are at max heart rate and can't cool down. One of my ventricles gets out of rythym and pauses to catch-up and needs to beat hard to push the accumulated blood. Sounds really bad, but he said many people my age have them and don't realize it. Now stress brings them on or they just happen for no good reason and I have to live with it.

Nice shave Steve even if weird. That's why I use dice next to each razor to keep track.......I'm lazy too

I need to invest in some of those. I was thinking about joining in on KJ’s one blade February challenge just to eliminate the need to count lol. I don't think I could makr it the whole month though.

That's what's nice about the challenge. You can test the limits and go as far as you can and if you need to, you can change the blade as long as you use the same brand/type of blade. No asterisk needed ??

On the dice, check out ebay. I used to have a bunch, but PIFed them. You can get a 10 pack of DnD dice, in a single side count for dirt cheap.
