Steve's Journal: The Saga Continues....

Catching up a bit. And man oh man, what great seats at the basketball game! Yeh, you should start following the NBA closer now - especially since the 76ers are a real contender this year.

We just got a new couch as well and we are afraid of our little one (70 lbs of lab/pit) on how she will fare with the new couch. Fortunately for her, it is like a big bed. Let's hope it stays that way. The wife loves giving our dogs freedom but as a puppy she destroyed one of our beloved couches. Time will tell.

In my parallel world of shaves mine was a little rough today also!

Jumping on and off of furniture (especially the off part) is really bad for dogs with elongated bodies...so I am happy to hear that you are gating him to keep him off. But it is really nice to hear that he is feeling MUCH better. Had to at least bring a little smile to your face!

Must be a bad day for shaves haha.

And yes Don, the little guy definitely makes the whole family smile. Especially now that he’s starting to become himself again!

Haha yeah I should probably start paying attention!

Little one at 70lbs? Haha. Our little guy only weighs 10 lbs! And yes that is 10 pounds capable of total destruction!

Shave Time!

Razor: Fatip Grande
Blade: Voskhod
Brush: Stirling Kong Synthetic
Soap: WSP Blackbeard
AS: Nivea Sensitive ASB

Ditched the Stirling DE3P6 in favor of the Fatip Grande tonight. It may have been a bad idea....

I haven't had this much irritation in about 2 or 3 months. I had 2 weepers, but they closed up with just a bit of alum.

Speaking of alum, it didn’t seem to reveal an overly aggressive shave or any mistakes really. It pretty much only gave any feedback at all where the 2 weepers were. So I’m a bit confused as to what caused this irritation.

I can't really remember what happened the last time I used Blackbeard. It’s possible it’s a reaction to the soap. I’ve used it before, and up until recently I was still struggling to get an irritation free shave due to bad technique. So it’s hard to say. I’ll switch soaps tomorrow and see what happens.

The irritation is strange. Not a blanket redness over a section of skin like traditional razor burn, but more like in-grown hairs without the ingrown hair. Just sensitive red bumps. They’ve subsided a bit since my shave a few hours ago, but still there.

Otherwise, I’m DFS+. So I guess that’s a good take away lol.

I almost forgot, back at the end of October I mentioned the wear on the finish of the Fatip. I was able to snap a few picks that really picked it up. Not knocking Fatip, I still love the razor. I also like the look of something that’s been well used:

The darker shade is the original finish(gunmetal), the reflection of the blue towel is where it’s worn off.

Willie Update:

Still feeling good! We went for a bit of a walk tonight after work. Just down to the end of the block and about halfway back before I picked him up and carried him. The doctor said he needs to ease back into longer walks and rigorous playing. Doing good though. He’s also contemplating NurseDave’s mentioning of a blog. I believe he has his agent shopping some ideas around haha!

Dang, that Grande has some serious love marks! Lol. Thankfully it’s brass underneath, so it’ll still look nice, even with wear, if you have a way to polish it.

Shave Time!

Times 2......

Razor: Fatip Grande/RR Tech II
Blade: Voskhod/Feather
Brush: Stirling Kong Synthetic
Soap: WSP Barbershop
AS: WSP Barbershop

2 very similar shaves. I started the first using the Fatip Grande loaded with a Voskhod blade again. I was thinking maybe I was rushing with the last shave, or just hadn't had the angle correct. The shave was very uncomfortable after the just the first WTG pass, and I even had a few weepers. I decided to jump over to the RR Tech II. It's much milder (in my opinion) and I really seem to be able to get great shaves out of it. I was able to salvage the shave and finished up with moderate irritation but a solid DFS. I'm not sure what's going on with these other razors, but I'll have to try to dial them in again.

Second shave: Exactly the same set up, except I used the Tech II the entire time. The shave itself was great. No irritation, solid DFS. The weird thing about today's shave was that after about an hour of applying the AS, it went from being the awesome barbershop scent it normally is, to being a strange peppermint-y scent. This has never happened before and the scent lasted all night. I'm not sure what happened here as I've used this soap/AS combo numerous times without incident. Strange.

As for the razor dilemma, I'll now be on the hunt for something a tad more aggressive than the Tech II so I can gradually move my way back up to the other 2 razors. Although, from what I understand the Fatip is a relatively mild razor. I don't have much info on the Stirling though.

In Other News:
The wife and I went out for a few adult beverages Friday night. We haven't had a date night in a while so that was nice. We went to the only bar in our town, which strangely isn't a dive bar and has great food. Also got to watch the Sixers game which ended up being a great game!

Saturday we took a trip into the city to get us both new glasses from Warby Parker. They're a pretty cool company that donates a pair of glasses for every pair they sell. Their frames and lenses are also really cheap! The only downside is the frames are pretty...trendy...hipster...not sure what the right word is. So finding a pair can be difficult if you like more conservative styles.

Willie Update:
Still progressing, which makes things very difficult when trying to keep him rested. We've resorted to using a baby gate to keep him out of the living room. As long as he doesn't have a couch to jump on he's really not too bad.

Good update! Maybe a RR Mamba or Game Changer is in your future!

I need to get to the eye doc too...I need new everything!

Gonzo44 (current lurker, doesn’t post much) raves about his Mamba. And you’ve had some pretty great shaves with the GC, Chris. They’re both on my radar for sure! I guess I should start doing some research...

Great call to swap out razors. I'd look at the Rockwell 6c for mindless irritation free shaves and adjustability. We need pics of the glasses now !!!

How many uses did you have on the Voskhod. I love that blade for its smoothness. But they typically don't last that long for me. Very happy to hear that Willie is getting stronger and better each day!

The Rockwell is on my radar. My only hesitation is the adjustability. When I have that many options, I usually never settle on one lol.

The new specs should be in the week of Christmas. I’ll be sure to post some pics!

I’ve had nothing but great experiences with the Voskhods in the past. It’s one of my favorite blades so far. This particular blade was used once in my Stirling razor before I switched over to the Fatip. So at the point that I had switched it was at 2 full shaves (3 passes each) and one pass. I’m thinking the blade could have possibly been a dud. Or I have adjusted my technique so much using the Tech II that everything else now needs adjusting to....

....got to watch the Sixers game which ended up being a great game!...
I'm totally diggin' watching the Sixers this season. I watched the Philly/Toronto game this past Wednesday. Even though the Raptors ended up winning, it was a great game to watch. BTW, I'm really a fan of NBA basketball - love it. But I'm a sports junky anyway.

I’ve always been a huge baseball fan. I live and die with the Phillies. There have been a lot of disappointing years in between a few good ones lol. As for the other major sports, I’ve never been a basketball fan. But, I’m getting into the Sixers now. I didn't start following the Eagles until about 10 years ago when my father in law, a die hard of 60+ years, got me in to them. I was a huge Flyers fan, but stopped following them after the strike in 03 or 04. After the College Football Extravaganza we’ve had here, I might start getting into that too!

Congrats on the championship! I’ll have to let my sister know!
