Steve's Journal: The Saga Continues....

Shave Time!

I’ve been MIA for a while due to work, and I’ve completely lost track of my shaves. I’m a little annoyed at this, because I’ve also lost track of how many shaves I have on the Wilkinson Sword. I know it’s now over 40. My guess would probably be about 44. Since I can no longer accurately track it, I think I’ll bin it and possibly start over with a different blade and see how it compares.

As for the hint at the update that @Maryland998 would be interested in, I now have 2 that I’m sure he’s been dying to hear about lol. Ken was kind enough to offer up his honing skills for 2 of my 3 straights. One being a Dubbers. I don’t really have any info on this razor as I haven’t done much research and it was received a while ago from @dkeester. This razor was given the patented Shogun edge. The other is an F. A. Clauburg Gem Tonsorial that belonged to my grandfather. From II’ve researched online, this razor is likely around 100 years old and was likely either passed down or picked up second hand by my grandfather. Ken honed this one up on his Trans Ark. he also sent me a third razor but didn’t tell me which edge it was given and that I now have to pass the test of guessing correctly!

I used the Dubbers with the Shogun edge last week. I have to say this razor is now a deadly weapon. Super sharp. Very smooth. I gave myself a nice slice going east to west on my chin, but it was user error and not anything related to the edge. Well...other than the fact that it’s sharp as you know what. After 3 passes I was probably DFS- and chose to clean up with my ball endTech. I walked away BBS (no asterisk needed) with no irritation whatsoever. Good stuff

Today I broke out the Tonsorial Gem to compare. This edge is plenty sharp, but maybe not quite as sharp as the Shogun Edge. What it lacked in sharpness it made up for in smoothness. It was a very enjoyable shave. If my SR skills weren’t still lacking, I probably would have walked away BBS without using a DE for cleanup. I only needed to touch up the mustache area and a spot on my jaw line with the DE after 3 passes.

Willie World:
After a day of having a crew of 6 redoing our roof, Willie is pooped. He was doing a lot of looking around and wondering, what’s that noise?

A lot has happened at work in the last few days and it’s been pretty stressful. A fuel tank leak and subsequent remediation, Covid striking the branch again, and a completely new dispatch/towing process has had me on my toes. But....it’s my favorite time of year. Opening Weekend for baseball! So far my Fightin’ Phils are in 1st place with 2 straight wins over the Braves to start the season! I’m also looking forward to getting back to the ballpark. It’s my equivalent of Disney World. We’ll be attending our first game 4/20 against the Giants. This should be an interesting year, the NL East looks like the tightest division in the league.

Good show Steve. Glad you liked the edges so far. Your appraisal of the different edges is pretty common/normal. The Shogun being done on a 20K stone can be more than needed as far a sharpness is concerned. Like some say that Feather DE's are. The Arkansas edges are not as "crisp" and are more forgiving on pressure and angle. Actually for a while now when I touch up my razors. I have been using the Arkansas more often than the Gokumyo 20K . Also you may notice that after some use the Shogun edge will mellow out.
I am looking forward to your first impression of the Improved Swiss razor.

Thanks Ken! I may break out the mystery edge tomorrow if time allows. If not, I’ll definitely get to it this week. I’m curious to see if I can pass the test!

Gillette Fatboy
Blade: Astra SP (1)
Brush: Mystery Badger
Soap: Stirling Spice
AS: Stirling Spice

Monday

Tuesday
Razor:
Gillette Fatboy
Blade: Astra SP (2)

Soap: WSP Mahogany
AS: WSP Mahogany

Wednesday
Razor:
Rockwell 6C Plate 5
Blade: Astra SP (3)
Brush: Stirling Synthetic
Soap: PAA Atomic Age Bay Rum
AS: PAA Atomic Age Bay Rum

I’ve been super busy at work and haven’t been able to get around to posting an update. I lost count on the Wilkinson Sword blade so I decided to switch to the Astra SP and see how far it can go....doesn’t look like it’ll be very far. The blade has been uncomfortable for all 3 shaves so far. I might try a third razor to see how it goes tomorrow, but if there’s no improvement I’ll be moving on.

Willie World:
Not much going on with Willie. He’s just practicing being a bum...which he’s already very good at!

I finally registered with the state of NJ for my covid vaccine. I believe I registered Sunday morning. Yesterday I received an email with available appointments and scheduled mine for Saturday. The vaccine location says they have the Pfizer vaccine and the J&J, but you don’t have the option to pick. I guess I’ll find out when I get there 🤷🏻‍. I’m kind of hoping for J&J so I can be 1 and done.

Shave Time!

Razor:
Schick Injector I2
Blade: Schick Injector
Brush: Stirling Synthetic
Soap: Paladin Pythian Way
AS: Stirling Barbershop

Wow…it’s been a while huh? Well I’m back…for now lol. I’ve been shaving while away but sadly I have no exciting stories to tell about that. Mostly good shaves. A couple of great ones. No new acquisitions, however I do have an Amazon gift card burning a hole in my pocket. I’ve always wanted to try a slant so I have the Razorock German 37 and Parker Semi Slant sitting in my cart, along with a tortoise shell handle Muhle R41. The Muhle might get pulled out of the cart though. I really like the handle but not sure I really want the razor lol. If anyone has any thoughts on the Muhle or other suggestions I’m all ears!

I’m looking forward to having some down time and being able to catch up with everyone here. I’ve certainly missed everyone!

In Other News…

Work has finally slowed down for the moment. We’re fully staffed for our current incoming volume, but I’m told we’re getting 2 new customers in the next 45-90 days. The expected increase in volume is around 7,000 cars per year. So that puts our volume higher than it was before we lost our last major customer. We'll see how that goes…On a good news at work front, I was able to get an office employee a promotion and 2 yard employees raises. It nice to be able to recognize and reward all the hard work they’ve done over the last year. Now I have to work on a raise for me…lol

Outside of work life has been pretty boring. Made it to a few Phillies games this year. This season has been a rollercoaster, and it looks like it’s gonna come down to the wire. It is nice to have meaningful baseball going into September again though.

We also moved my stepson back to college this past weekend. He’s in his first off campus apartment this year with 2 buddies. All good kids so I’m not too worried lol. The house will be quiet again for the next few months which will be nice lol.

My parents finally sold their house (my childhood home) last Monday. That was a very difficult experience for me. I’m a sentimental sap so saying goodbye to the house was hard. Luckily I was their realtor so I got to meet the new family that bought it, and they’re great people with 2 young kids. Knowing that they’re going to enjoy the house and make great memories like we did made the process a lot easier.

Willie World:
The destroyer of pillows continues his reign of chaos and is doing well. I’ll have to get a picture of him in action…I’m sure I’ll have an opportunity when I get home from work. No pillow is safe when he’s around! His feline brother and sister are also doing well. His sister Lucy continues to be Willie’s partner in crime while Ozzy sits back and watches in disgust as the most behaved kid in the house. It’s an interesting dynamic to say the least
