Shaving with a Snake:
Straight Shave #295
Razor: 5/8 Klas Tornblom Frameback
Soap: CBL Russian Tea
Scuttle: Crown King Travel Scuttle
Strop: Mitchel Mogal #824 Horsehide
Brush: Semogue 1305
AS/EdT: Rich's Bootleg Bay Rum DFET
Sound track: Sly and the Family Stone: Everyday People
The Stuff: This is a razor I've only used a couple of times and it's been it my cabinet for quite some time. This frameback is kind of unusual in that the tang is quite thin and the spine is clamped over the blade. What happens with this design is it is challenge to get a good grip on the thin blade. It has a bit of a tendency to twist if one isn't very careful. This is quite prominent when stropping. No matter, this ol' boy is really sharp and ready for shaving. The Semogue is really coming into it's own with the bristles spreading out and blooming like crazy. And...of course... Mr. Lindsay's amazing soap! I can't identify what makes up this Russian Tea, but I am liking it very much. It takes a little effort to get it to peak with my water, but man oh man is it worth it. SafetyCat came into the den when I started stropping (or trying to without slicing my strop) and inserted himself into the right sink
The Shave: I think I may have been a bit dry with the Tea on the first pass as it was a little scritchy, but once I added a bit of water, it was slick as can be. This razor acts like a wedge until it tries to twist in my hand and inflict serious bodily harm to me. Luckily I have a SafetyCat on station to keep that from happening. Just in case, I apply Alum to my grip hand and that helped a lot. Not a lot of feedback from this razor but it is sizzling through a two day growth and after two passes only a little bit of touch-up was required to arrive at the DFS station. The real peril, being a single winger, is sometimes I grip the razor in a manner that it might 'flip' and cause serious hull damage. This will take some more practice to master, but I will keep at it until I get more comfortable with it.
Comments: It appears Spring is finally going to arrive in the valley. I was outside in shirt sleeves yesterday and probably again today before it rains this afternoon. I think I'll be mixing up a mess of Round-up to spray the weeds around the house before putting down the barrier and mulch for SWMBO's planned works. There is a youth group that is going to come and do the digging and spreading that I can't do any more. I kind of feel myself die a little inside at the prospect of my limitations. But once it's done, It will be a lot easier to maintain.
Respectfully Submitted,
Rich
