Duke Cannon Shave soap meets Genco Easy Aces
5 Dec 2019

Razor: Genco Easy Aces
Soap: Duke Cannon cuperior Grade Shaving Creme
Scuttle: Artisan Bowl
Strop: Griffith
Brush: Cadre Anniversary brush Badger
AS/EdT: Duke CannonAfter ShaveBalm ‘Ice Cold’

Comments: Today I am truing out some more Duke Cannon products and this time they are actually intended for shaving. The last DC product I shaved with was a bar of their shower soap and it worked quite well. Perusing the ingredients was to delve into a science experiment. Lots of ingredients here. Some I recognize. While probably better for my skin than canned spoo, I have some CBL shave oil on standby just in case. In general I like and respect the Duke Cannon Line because a portion of their profits go to help Veterans. I’m all about that. And i do like the way their shower soap smells, despite all the chemicals.

The Hardware: This Razor is post 1935 production from Bradford Pennsylvania. Still bears most of the factory blueing and has not seen much use. I still ran it across the firehose and leather to ensure it’s readiness. the SafetyCats have done an inspection prior to my shave and presumably found no deficiencies. I’ve been trying to figure the significance of the ‘Easy Aces‘ moniker and can only find a popular radio program of around that time period.

The Software: Duke Cannon shave soap lathers fairly easily and produces a good lather for the shave. It is shy on the post-pass slickness I enjoy with my usual artisanal soaps. Still, it has a pleasant fragrance and gave adequate cushion for a very good shave. The After-shave Balm was a bit greasy on application, but did absorb into my skin and provided adequate moisturizing after the shave. The Menthol hit was pretty mild. But, once again, I am spoiled by artisanal products and probably are skewing my perceptions. The fragrance is quite pleasant, but there is a lot of science going on with the balm as well. A bit of talc cured the greasiness. I guess I’m not a balm kind of guy

The Shave: Three passes and I ended up with a just shy of a spectacular shave. Snobbery aside Duke Cannon is a good product and quite useable for shaving. I like their business model and the products they produce. I am still working on horizontal strokes on my neck with a straight. Feels a little sketchy, but I’m getting more comfortable with practice. I will keep these products in my travel kit and bring them out periodically.

Love that Razor! And ask @ShawnF about Bradford Pennsylvania (were the razor was made) he is from that area. Great shave and maybe I will give Duke Canyon some attention now that you have said it is a good product. I see it all over the place...but just haven't pulled the trigger.

I love those Easy Aces, and that is a fine example. It's funny, you can find most Genco's for barely more than a song, but the Easy Aces always seem to fetch a premium price.

Bradford, PA, home of Zippo lighters and subzero temperatures. It is often the coldest place in the state, and sometimes the continental U.S. Pretty country up there.

Razor: Gillette Superspeed blue tip / GSB (1)
Soap: Eleven DFS
Scuttle: Artisan Bowl
Strop:
Brush: Sterling Kong Synthetic
AS/EdT: Eleven DFS

Comments: A Bright and sunny yet chilly day in the valley and the SafetyCat wants in the window. That means my shave water makes more steam. But she’s happy so it’s all good.

The Hardware: I got this razor at some point to compare with a couple of Lady Schicks I picked up. I’m not sure where this one came from. It’s got a little bit of corrosion on one of the doors and it could do with a replace. For now it’s a solid user-grade blue tip.

The Software: Eleven soap’s DFS is a release I think for the DFS shave Group but I’m not for sure. I know I've not used it much (maybe twice) it is a nice firm soap that lathers easy and has a nice subtle fragrance that I would call barbershoppy, but from their site : Scent profile is Oakmoss, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Patchouli, Amber and Musk. I nailed the water straight away but overshot my objective so went without rinsing between passes to avoid blowing through the water band. Pretty good post pass residual with added water for cleanup. I made a heckuva mess whipping this up.

The Shave: the standard three passes with the (exceptionally mild) blue tip and this soap left me quite smooth and clean. A bit of cleanup and I’m flirting with BBS for the second shave in a row. I’m sure I’ll break through soon. Hopefully when my Vector arrives.

We need a Safety Cat pic, in the window even! But I do realize that can be hard to get, as felines seem to instinctively know when the shutter is about to click and move to keep you on your toes.

I read back a ways, and learned about your Safety Crew. My sincere condolences on the loss of Safety Cat Prime (Mittens?). I lost Carson (see avatar) unexpectedly in late April. It still hits me at times, how much I miss him tagging along to "supervise" my chores and oversee my shaves. And I lost my Mom in August, and had that same experience you described in a July post. For me, I believe it had to do with time and distance. Love is still there, but daily visiting had ceased when I move half a continent away and only made it home yearly. Still, I miss talking to her on the phone, and I still see my little buddy out of the corner of my eye when shadows and lighting play tricks. I am sorry if this dredges up sorrow, but I wanted to let you know I get it, and we still can grieve without being incapacitated.

These are fairly recent pictures of Buster (the large one) and Noel (now SafetyCat first class) Buster has gotten too large to wedge himself under the faucet lol.DA82622B-6EBC-43D3-870E-6D1C882500DE.jpegD4B430EC-0CCC-4D97-B02C-440DFF57ABD6.jpeg

Razor: Gillette Superspeed blue tip / GSB (2)
Soap: OZ Wicked
Scuttle: King hot water scuttle
Strop:
Brush: Sorrentino Badger “R2D2
AS/EdT: OZ Wicked

Comments: Its dark, rainy and crummy outside. As a result, I failed to get moving until late. I wanted to get another helping of that Blue Tip today. SafetyCat Noel wants something, but isn’t being as cooperative in showing me what she 2ants. She jus5 keeps nagging.

The Hardware: turns out I have two Blue tips! I found another in the cabinet this morning. This makes me smile. The other one would be a better candidate for a replate job. If I get that far after my birthday razors.

The Software: Wicked loads pretty fast and easy. It seems to like the warm scuttle and the kinda liberal amount of water I spilled into the brush. The frag is different to my nose from the scent notes as it smells like a sweeter barbershop to me. It’s nice though. The aftershave restrictor is pretty stingy and it takes quite a shaking to get any product out, and it is markedly different from the soap somehow. I can’t quite put my finger on why though.

The Shave: While the last shave I was aware this was a very mild yet efficient razor, I really got a chance to enjoy it this time. It’s very intuitive as to the angles and muscle memory takes over from there. Three passes and a bit of buffing and I am aerodynamically smooth.
