Rich's Journal: Adventures with Life and Sharp things

Bummer about the foot pain Rich. I have had Plantar Fasciitis in some form or fashion since around 2005. I saw a doctor once and he did steroid injections and those did help. But I wasn't going to the doctor once a week for a shot. About the only thing that really helped me were calf stretches. It wasn't instantaneous, but after a few weeks, I was able to manage the pain quite well. Just a few minutes in the morning each day did me wonders! As a side note...I took all sorts of medications to see if they helped...Celebrex, OTC meds, and others I can't remember. The only thing that helped me was stretching.

Hope you find a treatment that works for you!

I received this razor in the post several days ago and only gave it a single trial pass, so today it gets the whole tamale. It’s fairly early and its hot outside, but its a muggy, miserable kind of heat. There are warnings all over the radio and TV to bring in all your old people and pets and pack them in ice. I am Experimenting with a cross pollination of two of my favorite cold soaps. Iced Pineapple, and Ghost Pineapple. Hoping to see if there is synergy between Menthol and Synthetic Menthol. If nothing else, I know the Synthetic chill lasts longer so I’ll have a prolonged coolness.

The Hardware: Since it’s arrival I’ve had a chance to carefully examine this razor. It’s fit and finish exceeded my expectations by quite a large margin. The gripping surfaces meet with good precision and the finish is only marred by a couple of little flaws. Not a biggie. The main part of the razor seems to be cast zinc with a few steel parts, (springs and pins) to keep it all together. Not bad for an inexpensive clone. The OZ Silver Snow brush continues to be a favorite with it’s heft and synthetic bristles. I think I’ll be keeping it.

The Software: One of my concerns when using two different soaps is of cross contamination. Who knows what might happen when natural meets synthetic in a closed container? Having just watched 3 seasons of Stranger Things, I am acutely aware that I should take care. So.... I used a Gelato spoon and put some Ghost Pineapple in the scuttle, and then loaded my brush with Iced Pineapple. The union of the two didn’t require a lot of water to produce a nice runny lather that was quite slick indeed.

The Shave: This is a pretty nimble and able razor! Everything just kind of fell into place and without much thinking about it, I was able to grind out a BBS in three passes! This will make a great travel razor. If it gets lost or someone decides they like it better than me, I wont be out much. At the very least, it’s a pretty good shaver.

Rich, I thought once you mentioned your bathroom as being pretty warm. I hope your house is nice and cool! Don’t want to have to picture you in the recliner with your feet in a tub of ice water.

This whole heat wave thing needs to end about 2 days before Rich’s cruise

We purposely chose this itinerary in the hopes it might be cooler in the great white north. We keep the house at 75, which seems to be the sweet spot for our heat pump. If I go cooler, it runs all the time, warmer, it gets too warm, then freezing in cycles.

Nice shave and good thoughts on the Kai Clone! Stay cool out there...it's hot all over!

Razor: Gillette Travel Tech / Bolzano Superinox (1)
Soap: Ghost Clown Puke
Scuttle: Captains Choice
Strop:
Brush: Sterling Fan Badger
AS/EdT: Rich’s Bay Rum DFET
Talc: Pinaud Clubman

Comments:
Countdown to Cruise: 18 days. Practicing with the Gillette Travel Tech. Yesterday’s record heat ended last night with excellent Thunderstorms and a 20 degree drop in temps. No basement problems to speak of. There were a lot of people with wet basements today from the downpours though.

The Hardware: The tiny short handle of the Travel tech created some minor challenges in moderating blade pressure, gotta remember to not try and compensate for the shortness of the handle. The Bolzano feels to me like a smoothed out Feather blade. This was a great pick up! Thanks Chad @Cvargo for the rating.. never would have thought to try these.

The Software: The addition of a little WS-23 to my clown puke added a touch of chill and added to the sensory kaleidoscope created by the mixture of soaps. Some of the soaps I used in this mixture weren’t stellar latherers, but all together, they do a greater job.

The Shave: Three very smooth passes and i figured I had a near grail shave. Slick as glass and I felt no irritation until I applied the Alum. But the sting just enough to remind me to watch my pressure next time. BBS- due to the sting.
