Started today knowing this wouldn’t be a terrible shave, and pleased it turned out pretty good. Those of you on Facebook have probably seen a blitz of ads from Duke Cannon. I went to their site and looked around for shave soap (of course). Alas, I didn’t see any, but I did go for their “big ass bar of soap” which seemed to be a good manly fragrance. A couple weeks later, this challenge appeared and here we are.

The Hardware: Kind of glad to get this set of 10 in the books. I’ve been jonesing for some straight shaving and have a couple of razors inbound. (One today as a matter of fact) The 74 shows no signs of degradation and I am considering (probably against my better judgement) daily shaving for a while. But I am Slow of beard, and it will be more difficult to judge the quality of the shaves. I’ll think on that for a while.

The Software: The water at my house is quite hard so it sometimes takes a bit of effort to raise a good lather. It was surprisingly easy to get a usable lather from the Duke bar. I did take the precaution of using some pre-shave ala galactic space cube to add to my anticipated slickness. It was not necessary. A few extra turns of the brush coaxed a useable lather from this soap. It showed it was surprisingly more slick on the residual side than antcipated.

The Shave: Pretty good shave. Despite being wildly off on my initial eyeball measurements of the bar. It was able to provide the lather for a reasonable shave. Being heavy on the scent side as body soaps tend to be made it a natural match with good ol’ GTB to finish up a DFS+

received this shiny gold beauty in the post yesterday and simply had to give ‘er a go!

The Hardware: For the price I was expecting quite a bit less. I presume the razor to be a zinc casting as there is no magnetic attraction at all even with my strongest of refrigerator magnets. But the quality of the alignment where the blade is gripped is quite good and holds the blade firmly and straight. Blade exposure is quite good and consistent. It feels a little smaller than a standard Kamisori, but that could be the drugs talking there. It is pretty gaudy being all gold plated, and I cant help but comparing it to the ‘Pimpmobile’ of my AC selections. Still no worries on the QC of the mechanics.

The Software: I’ve used the Cube Preshave as a soap a couple of times, but this time I was able to hit the water balance just right and got a decent lather for my single pass test. Plenty slick and full of mentholy goodness.

The Shave: I approached this shave knowing to expect something different than a Feather SS shave. What I experienced was much closer to a straight shave with a shorter blade. Admittedly not a lot of whisker to harvest as I am not a daily shaver, but it was good enough to keep my face presentable and move my tomorrow shave to the next day. I was cautious, and only did a WTG pass so I am at CCS+ after one pass, but color me impressed on this one!

Ya, but how many days until the cruise?
23 days.. they emailed our luggage tags to us yesterday. The said print them and attach to our baggage. They say they prefer they be printed in color. How important is that. I haven’t got a color printer. I reckon I could “try out” the apple net of a color printer at Beat Buy.

Probably just makes their sorting easier to do visually than having to read the tags. If you know what colour they should be, you can always use marker on it. I'm assuming they've told you to just cut them out and staple them on the bag. Some people do that, but some like me like to worry about everything and get concerned the tag could easily be ripped off the bag. Ever see the HUGE piles of luggage in the employee stair wells of a cruise ship? So pro-tip: sandwich your luggage tag in packing tape and then staple it on the bag. They also sell cruise luggage tag holders on Amazon that attach with a metal wire.

This is my first full straight shave in quite a while. While I was jonesing for one of my beloved Klas Tornblom’s This Friodur was actually the keenest in the fleet today and I want to make this shave a good one. While I have strict limits on doing ‘aerobic exercise’ I still have to support SWMBO as she struggles to get those last few ounces off before the cruise. The result has been a rather bad flare-up of Plantar Fasciitis, something I’ve struggled. This is something I’ve struggled with for years, but this time it’s rather more severe than before, where I just do my stretches and try to wear sensible shoes until the inflammation goes down. I actually went to see the Doctor to get some higher grade anti-inflammatory meds. And some heel cups (something else I’ve never had do do.
Several days of high temperatures with rain opened up to today with bright sunshine and humidity so running errands in the morning made for an even earlier shave.

The Hardware: For this shave I’m not taking any chances and using proven hardware. The Henckel is quite well proven and is arguably one of the better razors in the fleet, and of course, the Anniversary Brush is getting lots of love across the fruited plain.

The Software: Triple Milled Pre’ de Provence is super hard soap that loads easily and will I’m sure last many many shaves. I’ve used it dozens of times and the “63” is still prominent on the top of the puck. A. Quick load and a bit of extra water and I’m in latherland with great peaks, so I add a bit more water to increase my slickness.

The Shave: Three passes to a DFS+ which would have been better if I remember which direction I am shaving, I ended up with WTG, XTG, then after a brain cramp, just went ahead with ATG. I would have rather done XTG the other direction, but forgot what I was doing. Well, My heel is killing me so I’m off to the Doc. I added the appointment to the calendar and SWMBO called to make sure she hadn’t forgotten anything. Of course during filming of todays shave. Off we go.

** another question for my friends who do a lot of Cruising. Should I buy some Canadian dollars before heading our or just go with the 3% the credit card companies are going to charge me for international purchases?09BD1926-2E9E-4091-BB19-F5331A3660A2.jpeg

Sorry you’re having some pain issues there Rich. Hope it sorts out quickly!

Nice shave today; you were due for a break from the injector!

Bummer about the feet, that can be quite the sharp and intense pain.

In Europe we brought Euros so we would be ready for smaller type vendors that might not take credit cards. I'm curious if they would take American in Canada though. In Cancun everyone accepted American and stores posted their exchange rates.

Pretty sure with the steroid regimen and spirited stretching I’ll be good to go. Yeh, we were thinking about food trucks and little business that might not want to calculate exchange rates.

With the currency exchange fees to buy and then resell what you didn't use, if visiting the glory that is Canada is a one-off trip, go with the credit card.

I hate it when my feet flare up. Luckily it hasn't happened in a while. I hope it gets fixed up soon, Rich! Nobody needs that in their life.
