Genco Wedge Back in the saddle again :
DE Shave Straight Shave #289

Razor: 5/8 Genco Wedge
Soap: SV Opuntia (Bellisima!)
Scuttle: Crown King 12oz.

Strop: Mitchel Mogal #824 Horsehide
Brush: Omega +2 Badger Brush of Lathering
AS/EdT: SV Opuntia
Sound track: None

The Stuff: Between shaves I ran the razor over the Jnat with a taped spine. It seems to have really responded to this treatment and I anticipate the results will reflect that. Today’s Software selection is SV’s Opuntia which comes highly recommended and much anticipated. Brushwise the proven power of the Omega is always a good one to use.

The Shave: Today is also go with cold lathering to try out a theory I’ve been mulling about in my (mostly unused) mind. I theorize it may be more possible to get a close and safe shave with cold water due to the tightening of the skin and standing up of the whiskers. The downside I foresee is that it may also not soften the whiskers as hot water does, making it harder for the razor to do it’s job. We shall see.
Lathering direct to the face I think it’s a little dry for the first pass and I slow my pace a bit. In doing that I set myself up for a little nick because my rhythm is off. But with SafetyCat in place, I only hit the usual spot and it doesn’t really affect the shave. Pass 2 I added more water to my face and was rewarded with a much slicker and better lather (did I mention the frag? OH MY! Its wonderous) Mittens is a little fidgety today and leaves his seat during pass 1 and I admonish him not to leave at least until I finish this pass. He leaves his seat and repositions himself to the toilet seat to cover my flanks from a Murphy attack.
Pass 2 and three are exceptionally good with this razor which indeed is much better for the taping of their spines. I’ve never done it and am a bit mystified how changing the profile can have so much impact on the Shave ability of the razor. It does and I should just let it lie. But the engineer in me ponders. I arrive in BBS land very solidly after pass 3 and a bit of cleaning up on the neck region. I spilled the AS a bit and not wanting to waste it, and being unable to put it back in the bottle, went ahead with the application. SWMBO likes the frag, but did say she could smell me from the garage door. I am hoping my cloud of SV goodness will contrace a bit before we go to tonight’s activities.

Comments: We are going to another charity auction tonight to which I have donated a starter wet shaving kit. I hope that by doing this I can renew someone’s interest or convert a spooge user from the dark side. The lineup for the noob kit is a SuperSpeed (L-1) some Voskhods, a Sterling Boar brush and some sample soaps. I am throwing in a copy of ‘The Art of Shaving’ which I think will be interesting for the user.
Today’s shave is after an extended gap due to an unfortunate run-in with gravity and my being a little shaky. That and corralling a SafetyCat to do their assigned task is like.. well.. herding Cats.

Most excellent, Rich! Just another glowing review of Opuntia, that's all.

Great job on the honing with tape. I've taken to doing all of my honing this way to keep the hone wear off of the spine. I know it changes the geometry eventually, but if I can keep them looking pretty for at least a little longer, it's worth it to me.

OOH! I wouldn't have thought of that! I'll try that tomorrow! Thanks Walt! On reflection I have two that I need to try that on! Thanks twice! Should I treat it like a bevel reset?

I would Rich, but hopefully you do not need much on the 1K.

Nice shave, read, and picture Rich!

Good job on the honing!

I hope the run in with gravity wasn't too bad, and glad to see you are over it well enough to shave!

Glad the cats did their job this time!

Make sure you let the auction winner know the package includes a free membership to TSC ;)

Thanks guys! I nearly bid on the package myself rather than let it go for such an embarrassingly low bid. But I let it go. ***sigh*** At least I was smooth and smelled great.

That's the hard part about charity auctions you never know how it will go

Nice read Rich, and as you know I have been cold water shaving for years/ I do start out with a lather massage and Hot towel, but cold from there on out. Very nice reads and photos

Thanks Chad. Yup. It was a pretty nice razor too. I hope the guy who got it actually uses it.

I plan on exploring this in the coming months. But my cold water comes out of the tap quite cool even in the summer. In winter it's actually very cold. I've been using that latherless shave cream for my preshave.

Great shave Rich. It may have gone cheap, but at least someone may be introduced to a new way of shaving.

Rich, just catching up. I must have missed something. What's a safety cat? Of all the things in my home, my cat "Monkey" is the most harmful thing to me. I'm always scratched up, lol. There's nothing safe about him!

Since he was a kitten, my cat Mittens has been fascinated with my shaving activities and likes to sit in the right sink and watch me shave. He can hear me when I start stropping and will jump up and sit there while I shave and has taught the other two cats how to do the same (I know it's creepy, but I swear it's true) I theorize he is keeping old man Murphy out of the shave den. Here are a couple of pics of the SafetyCats in action.

A Twofer entry :
Straight Shave #290
Razor: Genco 5/8 Master Barber
Soap: Pre De'Provence
Scuttle: Crown King 12oz.

Strop: Mitchel Mogal #824 Horsehide
Brush: Antique Badger
AS/EdT: Clarified SV 70 (See Below)
Sound track: None

The Stuff: This Genco is literally the first razor I touched today it leaped into my hand and begged to be used today. The soap and aftershave are known quantities. After some stropping, and the Safety Crew in position we are all ready for this shave.

The Shave: I did the full prep this time for the shave today. hot towel and all. Then Cold face lathering. Only to have the SafetyCat abandon his post about halfway through the first pass. I was forced to finish and truncate the shave at one pass to finish. So Count this as a maintenance shave and I will get another swing at it tomorrow.

Comments: Trusting in my safety crew may well have saved me from grievous injury today. A friend of mine is coming to take me on an adventure in Columbus. Yahoo!

DE Shave
Razor: Gillette Slim I-1 (1963)/ Gillette Black (6)
Soap: Proraso Green
Scuttle: Crown King 12oz.

Strop: Mitchel Mogal #824 Horsehide
Brush: Omega Boar,
AS/EdT: Proraso
Sound track: None

The Stuff: This shave is dedicated to fully do the cold face lather today. I will attempt to apply the cream to my face and then lather with a shaken brush to see how that works. To balance the risk, I am using a known mild and safe Slim Adjustable and my new favorite blade that I believe will not harm me if I show it the proper respect.

The Shave: Lathering direct to the face yielded a very slick, but low lather that I needed to really work with to get the water balance right. Once there, there was sufficient lather for two passes resulting in a pretty good shave. I continue to enjoy the 5 o'clock blade. It seems to have settled into a good smooth shave that has no signs of losing it's keenness.

Comments: Given I just pruned yesterday, the Slim was more than adequate to get the job done without causing undue leakage. In two passes I am in CCSville and that's about the best I feel I can manage today.

A careful sweep of the Den showed no trace of the Murphy.

Love it Rich...the 2nd picture made me laugh as the cat looks like it's either glaring at the lather with disdain or it wants to dive right in!

Nice couple of shaves too...good call on the early pull-up on the first shave to avoid leakage!

Nice shaves Rich. Glad the safety cats are still keeping old man Murphy at bay. Kind of makes me think of those old Scooby-Doo cartoons. "And I'd have gotten away with it if it wasn't for those meddling cats"

They are also the timekeepers for Bed time and Wakeup time. When it's time, they pester me until I either head back to the sack or roll out.
