Rich's Journal: Adventures with Life and Sharp things

20 Feb 19 .68 Game Changer plate Bay Rum day

Blade: Gillette Silver Blue (10)
Razor: Razor Rock .68 Game Changer
Soap: Sterling Bay Rum
A/S: Thayers Aloe - DFET Bay Rum
Brush: RazoRock 400 Synthetic

By special request this shave utilized Sterling Bay rum and my Dog From Every Town (DFET) Bay rum. The Sterling sample I have is old enough to have changed color, but it's still pliable and mooshed properly in the bowl. Use of the SuperLather solution successfully brought it to a great lather and a bit more made it super slick and a bit soupy which is how I prefer. The .68 Game Changer plate arrived yesterday and with careful inspection I was unable to find any imperfections. The guys over at Italian Barber must be super fussy!

Three passes went pretty much without incident. This plate is noticeably more mild than the .84 and would be well suited for daily maintenance, or when ill or hung-over. Times when one doesn't necessarily need high efficiency rather preferring mildness and reduced chance of nicks and cuts. I'll run this plate a few more times to confirm this. It's kind of neat to have the whole set of plates for the system though. DFS+ in 3 passes +cleanup.

It’s a very nice razor, but have never compared it with a timeless. Chad will probably chime in here, I think he has both.

Nice shave Rich! I’ve been thinking about eventually getting one of the RR Stainless razors. I know someone that has the Mamba and uses it as a daily driver. Lots of GC love around here though!

Reports are the Mamba .70 is no slouch. Right up there next to the .85 GC!

So I guess it line up in the middle of the 2 GC plates. I haven’t done much research yet, but I wonder what, if any, of the other differences are.

Still do you research, these are my impressions of the products, but - the Mamba (v1) was originally marketed as the “perfect” head shaver, focusing mostly on mild shaves, no blade feel, silent reduction, while trying to maintain some amount of efficiency. The v2 Mamba tries to carry that on with improved efficiency while still maintaining a similar smoothness of shave.

The GC seeks to find the balance of fine blade feel and high efficiency - an entry into the quest of most modern artisan razor makers.

The actual differences are a matter of fractions of fractions I’m sure. Slight differences in head geometry, guard geometry, and blade exposure.

Got this in the mail today. Does anyone else think I look like I should be picking coffee beans in the misty mountains of Columbia with my burro?

I was thinking more along the lines of a Cuban Marxist commanding a troop of Guerrilla Warfare Fighters battling against the an oppressive oligarchical government!
