I have to admire the quick shave/post...I tend to let my verbosity get away with me sometimes...(ok most of the time)

Today: No Shave

Well, Saturday, I didn't really have time to shave in the morning, so I was forced to skip it. Then, it came to yesterday. I went with one of my favorite shavers, the Shovelhead. It made short work of all the long whiskers. The Legacy brush makes lathering a breeze. It is almost too easy. I also decided to use the best soap in my den for this one since I had more that the average amount of whiskers. Between this and the GEM, it shaved me so well, that it was almost silent on the third pass. The salve felt great afterwards and I smelled good all day. It isn't a strong smell, but you get whiffs of it when you aren't expecting it. This morning, I got up and was on the border between DFS and CCS, so I decided to skip the shave today.

A la Mancha, I alluded to it earlier, but this was a busy weekend. The kids woke us up on Saturday and I was busy with them until about 10 when SWMBO decided that we should go to a lavender festival a couple of towns over. So, she and I rushed through our showers and were out the door 30 minutes later. We hung out there for a few hours, the kids watched a magician who called me up to help out with a couple of tricks. He wasn't that slick at palming things, but he wasn't bad either. Arabella also got called up to help out with a trick as well. They had a great time. There were quite a few different soap makers there, 2 of which sold shaving soap. I didn't buy any though because both of them had olive oil in it. I am not sure why, but I have found 3 local producers of it and they all put that in there. I have yet to try any of them. After that, we went home, and I started tearing apart a couple of pallets that I am going to use the wood for a project coming up. They had been left outside for a while, so they look like reclaimed barn wood. I should have taken them apart earlier though. The nail heads are popping off rather than allowing the nails to be pulled. By the time I had to be done to leave for the kids' baseball/softball party, I had figured out a method that worked really well to keep the boards from getting broken, gouged or dented. I guess I can continue with that method later. We had a great time at the party, the kids got their trophies, then headed to the pool. The kids had a great time.

On Sunday, we went to church, but even though it was my day to teach, the class was so small, that the other teacher suggested that we combine classes and said that she could do it. So, I went into big people's church. Afterwards, went out to lunch with the family and did a little running around. Got back in time to cook dinner and have a movie night with the kids. Was a great weekend.

Oh, I also grabbed another straight off the bay, so I have 2 straights inbound. This one is a C-MON.

Have a great day everyone!

Nice read Don. At a festival one time here there was someone I asked if they make shaving soap. She tried giving a lecture about how great olive oil is in shaving soap. I asked it lathers. She claimed yes. And she even said she had a brush I could try. It was on of those cheap omega boars. So I tried to whip up a lather. BAD mistake for her. It didn't turn out like she hoped when I started critiquing everything about the lather. Although I do believe there is an artisan online but the name is leaving me... The line is Olivina and I hear they mastered the Olive oil soap. So I guess it can be done.

Also sounds like a great Father's Day you had!

Great shave Don, glad the DG Santal Auster is treating you well! You're talk about the project with the pallets have me intrigued...sounds like it was a great weekend with the family though!

I think you're referring to Cold River Soap Works Oliva line of soaps...not sure if they're making them any more.

Great update. There are a bunch of artisan soap makers out there that know nothing about how to make shave soap. I had horrible luck with one of my local artisans. The soap smelled great, but it was primarily olive oil and didn't lather well at all.

It is nothing special. Still trying to convince SWMBO to see my vision of it. We are trying to teach the kids about money and one of the things that we are doing is that we have them 3 mason jars. They are for saving, spending and giving. Well, they are moving them all around their rooms and misplacing them. I am just making something to hold them. What I would like to do is take a few of the pieces that are damages with splits and holes, use those and just fill those imperfections with colored resin. She doesn't want to spend the money on those supplies though. Granted, if she gave me free reign, I would probably cast my own "jars" and have them integrated into the design.

Sounds like a very full weekend, the other Don.

Olive oil is great for making bath soap...but that is where it ends. I love these Farmer Market/Festival soap makers that will have a shave soap poured into a little pint jar with some decorative doily under the lid. I had one tell me her husband shaves with her soap all the time. Then I saw her husband, bald and bearded. Olive oil can make a good shave soap, but not generally. So anytime I see one of these soap makers with an olive oil shave soap, I just assume no one has shaved with it.

Catching up, Don.

....I can't help but brag about my kids some times. They have huge hearts. Last week during VBS, they were collecting money to give to a family from our church that gave up everything they had to move to Haiti to open a clinic. My son brought us his savings jar and asked us if he could give it all to them. He had $28 in there. It was a lot for a kid who doesn't get an allowance yet. But they are constantly doing things like this and I could not be more proud.

That's great!

Two days worth of growth were easily mowed down by this set up. I have stopped counting my shaves on a blade. I am just going to toss them once I feel them start to degrade. I started counting them to improve my technique, but somewhere along the way, I started becoming obsessed with the number getting as high as possible. This set up gave me a great 3 pass BBS.

Just one day's growth today and if I hadn't started soaking my brush and blooming the soap before the shower, I may have skipped it. This razor and my shovelhead are just cutting it so closely, there is not much to cut the next day. After 3 passes, I am BBS yet again. This badger/boar knot is a good knot. I am not sure if I would prefer it over a 100% of either, but it is definitely enjoyable. For the most part it is soft like a badger with just a little scrub from the boar bristles mixed in. It provides plenty of backbone to be able to dig into your favorite hard soap. I have probably only used it around 10 times, so it is not completely broken in yet. I will continue to use it and see how it progresses. The handle is huge and I love it. The marble wood is beautiful. No pictures today, but if anyone wants one, I can see what I can do for you.

A la Mancha, I cleaned all the mold off of the wood in the cellar and ran both our dehumidifier as well as a commercial unit that I borrowed from the construction company my mom works for. After a week of running both, the humidity level down there was 40% (it was at 50% after one night). That is quite impressive to me as humid as it is around here in general. The smell is completely gone and the LOTH is starting to feel better. I think I got it. I will continue to monitor the situation though.

Excellent shave.

Way to conquer that mold! We lived for a while in a complex that had single pane windows and poor sealing. The annual battle against mold was unreal, and the health issues...ugh! Needless to say, glad to be out of there!

Taking care of the mold and cutting down the humidity is great. But the best news is the improvement of your wife's health.
