For the Love of Old Spice - Illini's Shave Journal

Another day, another dollar. Thanks to some less-than-encouraging conversations around career progression recently despite high performance, motivation isn't exactly high to do anything above and beyond. Unfortunately it seems that sentiment is shared not only with colleagues at my current employer but also friends at others as well. Couple that with low merit increases in an inflationary period and it just feels like a perfect storm for broad employee burnout. Ah well, I've always been in the "work to live not live to work" mindset so will always take a steady paycheck over unemployment.

At least it's hump day! Continue to love the shaves my Bakelite Tech has been providing, and the CBL Poseidon has a large donut in the middle meaning its days are numbered! Finished up the YSL Y EdP sample and while I could see how people love this, especially for the cooler weather, didn't do all THAT much different for me so not something I'll be picking up a bottle of.

Our first was a month early, and our second was born on time. It was waiting for the second that was tough.
Hopefully going to be the cast for us too - I'll take the nervous waiting over a NICU stay every day of the week!

Sorry about the job situation my friend - it is a bummer, but things are cyclical and we’ll hopefully be back in the employees market soon!

Great shave and I’l looking forward to the next game you get from your library!
Thanks Brian, with the economic signs pointing in the direction of recession (and not forgetting what it all looked like last time) I'm grateful for a well-paying job. Going to be a tight balancing act between stability in a turbulent economy vs hindering my career progression. Oh the fun!

Our son was 5 lbs 4 oz at birth, so no NICU required. He did require oxygen for a short while the night of his birth. He's a 6 ft tall 30 year old now, and extremely healthy and health conscious.
I'm envious - our son was also 5lbs 4.5oz but simply refused to eat on his own so we spent 2.5 weeks in the NICU. The nurses told us initially it would only be a day or two but evidently our son had other things on his mind!

Starting next Tuesday we begin a 2 week quarantine leading up to our scheduled C-section per a recommendation from her OB. Makes sense that we'd want to minimize our chances of catching Covid leading up to a planned delivery date. To help pass the time, I picked up a couple of new board games from the library ( @Scuttlesoap you knew it was coming) and even purchased one last night at Target as it was on sale and I couldn't resist!

The two games from the library are "Lanterns : The Harvest Festival" and "Star Wars : Outer Rim." Lanterns looks like a beautiful, family-friendly (read lighter) tile laying game and Outer Rim looks to be a much heavier role playing game.

Outer Rim:

On the purchase front, I had been drooling over @GearNoir 's Dice Throne Marvel battle chest and noticed the base set hit Target recently AND was on sale for $40. We have the original version of Dice Throne Season 1 and my wife enjoys it enough, so was able to convince her we needed this Marvel version as we both love the MCU.

Talk about a slew of new games to keep me and the wife occupied during our nervous waiting game for baby girl! I have no doubt she will like Lanterns and Marvel Dice Throne. She's warmed up to Star Wars over the years, and I've slowly been getting her to try heavier games, so Outer Rim will be a great litmus test of how heavy a game I can get her to enjoy.

Have a great Thursday friends, we're almost there!

Back to the grind Cadre. Today is officially my last day in the office until after paternity leave which is a wild feeling! Two weeks from tomorrow is the scheduled C-section date, time is really crawling right now and will only continue to do so as we quarantine.

The weekend was a nice and relaxing one for our family. Went to the pool Monday morning, spend the afternoon around the house, and yesterday had brunch at my parents. Lots of downtime on Saturday and Sunday afternoon meant we had chances to play both Lanterns and Star Wars Outer Rim board games. Wife was lukewarm on Lanterns but really enjoyed Outer Rim! It took us almost 3 hours to get through Outer Rim but it was the first time she had really ever been exposed to RPG elements and she really enjoyed it. With the extended playtimes, it's not one we'd get to the table often but we both had such a good time it wouldn't surprise me if we bought it in the future.

Thanks for checking in, have a wonderful week friends!

Exciting times for you and your wife. IME, bringing a baby into the world is the best thing on earth!

So awesome that you’re going to be able to utilize some paternity leave! That’s so great!
Yessir, we get 4 weeks of paternity leave which isn't QUITE as nice as the 6 months the moms get here, but I'll take it!

That it is! The amount of confidence we have with our baby girl vs the lack there of with our son a couple of year ago makes everything seem far less daunting.

Busy time here at work, but at least I'm WFH now until the baby girl arrives. Wouldn't mind if she decided to come this week so I could go out on leave...

Babies do have their own schedule...
Ain't that the truth!

Hump Day! Continues to be busy at work, but can't pretend I'm starting to "check out" a bit in anticipation of the birth as there are just more important things on my mind! Ah well, can you blame anyone?! Enjoyed a mow out in the lawn last night after work which is always nice. Weather has been fairly wet and mild this summer so this is the best the lawn has looked in August since we moved here. Can't say I'm upset, especially since I know I'll be able to spend less time out there this autumn.

Have a great day, thanks for checking in!
