DeepSea’s Journal

Hello Cadre! Thing have been pretty busy here for the most part. Been doing some medication changes which is not fun at all. Messing me up in all sorts of ways. I’ve been thrust into a new position at work and need to get a department back in sync while trying to learn a while new side of the house. Good stuff... Honing has become a focus but I’m not yet able to get a bevel set yet. I’m sure it’ll come with time. I finally opened the AoS tallow Sandalwood I got in a trade with @dangerousdon and used it the last 2 days. It makes some really nice thick creamy lather with a really good slickness. I’m going to have to get a sandalwood AS to go with it if I can find one that’s not too sweet. After seeing a Chubby Scrubby in one of @bosch ’s pictures a while back it was burned into my brain and now I have one on the way. The last couple weeks I’ve been going through all my hobby stuffs and started getting rid of some things. Surfboards, paddle boards, shave stuff, and a motorcycle I know I’ll regret selling... such is life I guess.

Sounds like a lot of moving parts ... hang in there!

My team at work is currently being crushed by our workload. Not fun. My wife and I have also been going through things and reducing our possessions as well.

On the honing front, check out this thread. Jump in and ask questions.

Great photo! Love the setup. (y)

Whoa now wait just one minute here.
Motorcycles can be stored/moth balled. But sold.....that’s drastic and downright tragic. So many times while gassing my Norton or Ducati up. Guys have come over to tell me about how they wish they had never sold their bike. Sometimes it is for the best. But please meditate some. And be at peace with your decision.

Unfortunately she’s been sitting waiting for me to get her back in the road for quite some time now. Just don’t have enough time left over these days. Seeing her leave will out a tear in my eye, but she needs to get out and run.

The Chubby Scrubby showed up today. Out of the box there was no funk. I soaked it for a bit, hand lathered to clean it out and no brown water to be seen. Loaded up with some WSP and faced lathered and I’m blown away how soft it felt on its first use. The handle has a nice weight to it and it comfortable to hold. I am VERY happy with this purchase. The rest of the shave was pretty darn good too.

It’s finally Friday and I’ve got a 4 day weekend ahead of me. I’m gonna see about setting a bevel on one of the straights. I’m really looking forward to shaving with and edge I did myself. It’ll be quite satisfying.

Have a good night, Cadre!

Great set up. I still need to replace the Omega boar I gave away a few years ago. Boars are highly underrated imo, though they can take a bit of getting used to.

If you like a good amount of back bone and some scrub, I highly recommend the Chubby Scrubby. 👍

The only shave-able edge left on any of my straights. I’m not sure how many shaves I’ve got on this one but it’s just starting to feel not quite as sharp. Im thinking of trying to touch it up with 1u then .3u lapping film. I’m hoping that’ll keep it going for a while longer. It originally had a ShoGun ™©® edge that was like shaving with a laser. Thank you again Ken @Maryland998 ! The modern Williams has been hit or miss with the lather. Either fantastic creamy and slick, or a complete fail and pull out a deferent soap. 🤷 Tonight it was some fantastic lather. 👍 Just a good shave all around.

So a while back when learning straight razor shaving I dropped this Boker while stropping and messed up the edge. Today I glasses the edge and tried my hand at honing it. I (hopefully) set the bevel on 12u lapping film then ran it through 60ish laps each on 9u, 5u, 3u, 1u and .3u. On the 5,3,1 and .3 I started to feel the edge stick to the film a little when flipping it over. I tried to have a light hand but I’m sure I was still putting too much and/or uneven pressure at times. At the end the edge was easily shaving arm hair, but didn’t pass a HHT. I shaved with it anyway and while it wasn’t the smoothest or closest shave I’ve had, it was satisfying to use an edge I honed. I also forgot to strop after the honing due to my excitement. 😬 A good amount of sting from the aftershave and a bit quite DFS result but it’ll do for tonight.

Good job on the honing. Just like anything. The more you do the more you learn. Just like stropping. Takes a bit for muscle memory to get established with honing strokes and pressure. Just go slow and don’t over think it.
You got the bug. It’s another rabbit hole. But have fun with it.

Thanks Ken! I’ve been watching videos and reading and there seems to be tons of methods out there. Just gotta see what works for me. 😀
Nice job on the honing. Now ... the rabbit hole of better edges.
Thanks Tim! If I can get a similar edge on the Boker like when you sent it to me I’ll be very very pleased.
Luckily there is a support group for all this :ROFLMAO:
😂 More like an old van that’s says “Free Candy” on the side. 😂

A nice shave this evening. Dare I say it was “Skippy”? I re-honed the Geneva this evening and it is markedly improved from the last session. I really need to put my balsa strops together and get them pasted up. Maybe this weekend.
Had a consult and testing with a Neuro-Psych specialist this morning. It seems my forgetfulness is a bit more then it seems. Turns out getting hit in the head too many times is a bad thing. 🤷‍♂️ Have a good evening and don’t for get to wear a helmet!
