Clyde72's Shaving Journal

I really need to find a drinking group like you have. So Cool!
Well you can do like we did and just start one. Literally got started because there were 5 of us that hung out at the Cigar Lounge and one of them scored a bottle of 15 Year Old Pappy and wanted to share it. We got to talking and decided that everyone would bring a bottle and we would have a "gathering". In Alabama if a business has a liquor license they can't allow you to BYOB, so we went to a different cigar lounge that didn't have a liquor license and allowed you to BYOB. Everyone brought a bottle or 2 or 3 and "The Order of The Dram" was born.

Straight Razor Shave #297

Razor: Klas Tornblom Eskilstuna
Brush: The Shaving Cadre 1st Anniversary Sorrentino Limited Edition Brush Shockwood with 24mm Timberwolf Synthetic Knot
Soap: Lather Bros. Calle Ocho
Post Shave: Cold Water Rinse, Alum Block, and Humphreys Witch Hazel
After Shave: Bull Dog Original Aftershave Balm
Cologne: Alt. Fragrance Cosair No. 22 EdP

Another new to me soap maker. Lather Bros Calle Ocho was chosen to kick of this work week. The scent of this soap is tobacco, guava and papaya. I have no memory of having smelled guava or papaya, so I'll have to take their word for it. I would describe it as a very foral herbal smell, with just a hint of cigar tobacco, and what I think is a trace of rose. I do like this scent. The strength of scent is a good 3.5 of 5 in the tub and lathered, it may get to a 4. The scent lasts for the entire shave. As per the norm I used the SV method and had no issues quickly loading and building a great lather. Great performance in all areas, slickness, glide/cushion, residual slickness, and stability.

3 passes and some clean up with the Klas produced one slight weeper and just a touch of alum sting. Overall a nice BBS shave.

Finished with the Bull Dog balm and then followed with the Cosair No. 22. This scent is inspired by Creed Viking. Having never smelled that scent I can't offer any comparison. From Alt. Fragrances website: "Its heart lies in the tang of peppercorn, combined with the merest hint of rose. Rich notes of sandalwood, vetiver and patchouli create a distinctly masculine base, and the overall effect is enhanced by light, lively citrus." This is a very nice scent, I do like it. I got the as expected 9 hours plus from this scent. Performance wise so far these colognes have been excellent!

Straight Razor Shave #298

Razor: Curtin & Clark Cutlery Co. Our Princess
Brush: Fine Accoutrements Classic Angel Hair Synthetic 20mm
Soap: Fine Accoutrements Italian Citrus
Post Shave: Cold Water Rinse, Alum Block, and Humphreys Witch Hazel
After Shave: Fine Accoutrements Italian Citrus After Shave
Cologne: Alt. Fragrance Fierce Oud No. 22 EdP

Been a few shaves since I used any of Mr. Fine's soap so Italian Citrus was selected today, mainly to pair the matching after shave with a cologne. More on that later. As expected the Fine soap performance was excellent! Easy to lather and hits the all the check marks! Whipped up an excellent lather and proceeded to the shave.

The Our Princess razor did its job and I must have did a good job operating her today. A very nice BBS+ shave with no nicks, weepers, and just an ever so slight, barely there at all alum sting. Yes this was a great shave!

Finished with the matching after shave. Then a spritzing of the Fierce Oud. This is Alt. Fragrances take on Acqua di Parma Colonia Intensa Oud. From their website: It evokes the Middle East to perfection, thanks to the heady flavour of oud oil and lighter citrus notes. Oud (or agarwood) is a prestigious ingredient used by the finest perfume houses across the world, and is celebrated for its warm, sensuous aroma. It combines with orange and bergamot to create a multi-layered, intriguing fragrance that subtly shifts throughout the day. This is the second scent inspired by ADP Colonia Intensa Oud, that I've used, (RazoRock Tuscan Oud being the other.). The strange thing is I really didn't care for the original, but I have enjoyed both of the others. This scent is very heavy on the oud, but I do get the citrus aka Colonia notes in the background. I like this scent! Definitely a masculine scent. Performance was excellent as with the other that Alt. Fragrances that I've used. Again 9 plus hours of longevity. Oh and yes this was a good pairing.

Soap: Wholly Kaw King of Bourbon
Post Shave: Cold Water Rinse, Alum Block, and Humphreys Witch Hazel
After Shave: Madame Scodioli Aged Bourbon Aftershave
Cologne: Duke Cannon Bourbon Solid Cologne

So I saw this Wholly Kaw scent mentioned somewhere and I had to have it. I don't think Wholly Kaw makes it any more or they are out of stock, but I was successful in locating some. 1st of all the scent is more of an woody, caramel, and vanilla with hints of ginger and vetiver to my nose, not some much what I'd call bourbon, but it is very nice! I like it! Strength of scent is 2 of 5 in the tub and 2.5 to3 lathered. The scent lasts for the entire shave. Performance was of course excellent. Wholly Kaw soaps are another one that hit all the checkmarks.

3 passes with the Vulcan and I'm BBS- with no nicks, weepers, or alum sting. Another successful straight razor shave!

Finished with the Madame Scodioli and followed that with some of the Duke Cannon Bourbon solid. Yeah that works!

Post Shave: Cold Water Rinse, Alum Block, and Dickson's
After Shave: Declaration Grooming Sellout After Shave Splash
Cologne: Alt. Fragrance Executive No. 26 EdP

Wanted something to pair the cologne with again today so I chose the Sellout. This is very nice "Aventus" type scent and of course performance was as expected, great! Whipped up an excellent lather with the Paladin and proceeded with the shave.

3 passes and just a few little buffing/cleanup on the chin and I'm BBS+ with no nicks, weepers, or alum sting. A very nice shave!

Finished with the matching after shave and the followed it with some spritzes of the Executive. This scent, as you might have guessed, it Alt's take on Creed Aventus. My take on this is it's a more darker scent than the lot of Aventus that I have. The pineapple is not the 1st thing you get. It's much more in line with the Sellout however, but is still not as pineapple forward. It is a very nice scent on it's own however. The projection on this one seemed noticeably less as does the strength of scent. That being said I did get a couple of complements in passing on my way to the cigar lounge. So maybe it was just my nose today. Got a good 9+ hours longevity.

Razor: Gillette Super Speed Black Handle Flare Tip S4
Blade: Feather
Brush: Semogue Excelsior 830 Boar
Soap: Williams Mug Shaving Soap
Post Shave: Cold Water Rinse, Alum Block, and Dickson's
After Shave: Figaro Monsieur Bluice Aftershave Splash
Cologne: Alt. Fragrance Agar Gold No. 2 Eau de Parfum

Well I just realized last night when I was laying out today's shave that the next straight razor shave would be my 300th. I wanted to be able to video it so I decide to postpone my next straight shave to Saturday, so I would have plenty of time to do so.

Haven't used Williams in a while and I don't want to loss my "Williams Mojo" so it was selected for today's shave. It's really hard to be it's performance, especially for the price, when it's dialed in right. I used the Semoque and whipped up an excellent lather without an issues.

3 passes and a little clean up with the Flare Tip and I'm BBS+ with no nicks, weepers, or alum sting. Tossing this blade, it was a little tuggy on this shave.

Finished with a good splash of the Monsieur Bluice splash and followed that with the Alt Fragrance Agar Gold. Not a bad pairing at all. This scent was inspired by Tom Ford's Oud Wood. I have never had smelled Tom Ford's so I have no comparison, The scent is predominately oud, with some vanilla, amber, and sandalwood to my nose. According to Alt. Fragrance's website: "...the notes of oud oil combine with other carefully selected scents to create a fragrance that’s sensuous, sophisticated and instantly recognizable. Rosewood and sandalwood also feature in this eau de parfum, adding a touch of the exotic to this Middle-Eastern inspired scent. The addition of tonka bean and amber creates depth and mystery, resulting in a powerful, status-symbol fragrance that’s hard to resist. It is s very nice oud scent and I like it! Performance was excellent as I've come to expect form this brand.

Soap: Lisa's Natural Herbal Creations Irish Green Tweed Sheep Milk Formula
Post Shave: Cold Water Rinse, Alum Block, and Dickson's
After Shave: Aqua Velva Original Sport Cologne
Cologne: Alt. Fragrance Mohair No. 18 Eau de Parfum

This soap was mainly chosen to pair with the Mohair EdP. Lisa's soaps are excellent performers. This is her take on Creed's Green Irish Tweed and it is a very close resemblance to it IMHO. Whipped up an excellent lather with the BC in no time as expected. Lisa's soaps are top notch for sure!

3 passes with the Super Adjustable and I'm BBS+ with no nicks or weepers and just a slight alum sting.

Finished with a splash of the Original Sport and followed that with the Mohair EdP. Mohair is Alt. Fragrance's Creed Green Irish Tweed inspired scent. They came really close to it IMHO, the Creed is just a little bit "greener" smelling but not by much. From Alt. Fragrance's website: "With top notes of citrus and peppermint, and rich base notes of cedarwood and sandalwood...". I like this scent and performance was just as good as the other samples.

Straight Razor Shave #300

Razor: Allegany Instrument Corp. WP
Brush: RazoRock Plissoft Disruptor Synthetic
Soap: Tabac Shaving Stick
Post Shave: Cold Water Rinse, Alum Block, and Humphreys Witch Hazel
After Shave: Dove Men+Care Hydrate+ Post Shave Balm
Cologne: Giorgio Armani Acqua Di Gio Pour Homme Profumo

As I stated on Monday, I used DE's for this weeks shave so I could video this shave.
Once again as I've done for every "Big" straight razor shave, I'm using the same setup as I did for my first one. The only difference is I used the Tabac Stick instead of the puck. Tabac was chosen for my 1st straight razor shave because it is an excellent performing soap! The shave stick is a breeze to use. Had an excellent lather on my beard and was ready to proceed in no time. MMMM Tabac! :giggle:

The AIC was in good form, but as I was afraid of since I was videoing this shave there was some blood. One slick nick/bad weeper, and another slight weeper. No alum sting other than the weepers. A nice BBS- shave. Hey I survived the 300th shave so it was a success. Like I say any straight razor shave that does not result in a trip to the ER is a successful one! ;)

Finished up with the balm and then a few spritzes of the Acqua Di Gio.

Cologne: Azzaro Chrome Eau De Toliete

Been a while sine I used any TOB's so I selected St. James for today's shave. TOB's creams are a great performer for me and super easy to lather. Grabbed the Stirling brush gave it a swirl or two in the tub and whipped up a great lather in the scuttle with ease.

3 passes with the Wacker and no nicks, but another weeper on the chin. Nothing bad, gone by the next pass. A nice BBS shave.

Finished with the Don Draper and followed that with some spritzes of the Chrome. A very good paring!

Thanks Chris! IT's an interesting scent, some of my friends at the cigar lounge liked it and some didn't, about 50/50. I'd say its worth spending a enough to get free shipping at ALT to sample their products. I will be purchasing some of the 30ml size, which at this time is the largest they have.

Well as per what has become my norm around here, I'm still running behind on my post. I do have 2 weeks worth of SOTD pics taken though. So here is the 1st weeks worth. 2nd week to follow. Then I've got to take this weeks so far.

Razor: Hess 44
Brush: The Shaving Cadre 1st Anniversary Sorrentino Limited Edition Brush Shockwood with 24mm Timberwolf Synthetic Knot
Cream: Proraso Green
Post Shave: Cold Water Rinse, Alum Block, and Humphreys Witch Hazel
After Shave: Proraso Green
Cologne: Adidas Moves Him EdT

Well my CDL (Commercial Drivers License) expires this week and I have to retake the HazMat exam to renew it and keep my HazMat Endorsement. Since I use it on my job sometimes, they pay for me to do everything I have to do to renew. Basically I have to pass the TSA background test, which is stupid since I have to have a Secret Clearance for my job, which is way more intense of a background check than the simple TSA one. I also have to pass the DOT physical which mainly is are you breathing? Is your heart beating? Blood Pressure okay? Can you see the eye chart? Are you color blind? Here fill this cup to the line, not for drugs, but to check Blood Sugar level. Which, was how I found out I was Type 2 Diabetic, several years ago. Okay you pass, and here is your Medical Card. All in all it would cost me around $350 to have all this done. Glad my employer covers this cost.
All that being said I shaved this morning, before going to stand inline at the DMV knowing I would have to have my picture taken, that is if I passed the exam. Well I did pass and I got my temp paper license, they mail the plastic one to me.

Thought I might just do a "Cream" week, so I choose Praraso Green for this shave. Hard to beat good ole Proraso, and the Green has just enough menthol cooling effect for a hot day! Whipped up a great lather with the 1st Anniversary brush and proceeded with the shave.

The Hess was just a little tuggy, but not bad enough to abort and use another razor. A nice BBS have with no nicks, or weepers and just a little alum sting on the neck.

Finished with the Green after shave lotion and followed that with some of the Adidas Moves Him. Not a bad way to start the day!

After Shave: Pitralon Original After Shave
Cologne: Dolce & Gabbana The One EdP

Keeping with the "Cream" theme for this week, Art of Shaving Sandalwood was chosen for this shave. What a wonderful sandalwood scent. I just wished that AOS creams performed better for me. I have much better performing creams that cost much less. Never the less, it isn't a bad performing cream, just for the price I expect much better!

I took the Hess to the pasted balsa strop and wanted to check the edge, ahhhh yes much more better. 3 passes and some clean up produced a BBS+ shave with one slight weeper and just a barely noticeable alum sting. A good shave!

Finished with a splash of the Pitralon Original after shave lotion and then a few vasilis of The One. This was a very nice pairing.

After Shave: Proraso Azur Lime After Shave Balm
Cologne: Salvatore Ferragamo Acqua Essenziale Colonia EdT

Well as good as Proraso core/original line of creams was, the Single Blade Line is a better performing product. The main place I notice it is in residual slickness, if original Proraso is a 2.5 of 5, Single blade is a 3.5. Great slickness and of course super easy to lather. I love the Azur Lime scent, which is just what it says it is. A good 2.5 of 5 strength of scent. Whipped up a great lather with the whipped dog and proceeded to the shave.

Just felt like using a DE for today's shave. Grabbed the BYR (Birth Year Razor) popped the ASP blade in and 3 passes and just a little touch up later I'm BBS+. Great shave! No nicks, weepers, or alum sting.

Along with Proraso there will always be some Taylor of Old Bond Street in my Shave Den. Whipped up a great lather with the Yaqi Barber Pole. This brush continues to impress me with it performance for the price. This is a great brush period!

Cologne: Duke Cannon Sea Solid Cologne

Well for what every reason I was craving the scent of Gearhead for today's shave. This is not a scent I would recommend to attract women, it smells just like a tire shop to me with some leather thrown in. Then again if you find a woman that did like this scent, she would probably be a keeper! I do like the scent. Typically great Chiseled Face performance as expected. Great slickness, residual slickness, cushion/glide, easy to load and lather, and no stability issues. Strength of scent is a 2.5 of 5 in the tub and 3 lathered. The scent does last for the entire shave.

3 passes and some clean up with the Klas and I'm BBS- I think the Klas needs a quick trip back to the Translucent Arkansas for a touch up. No nicks or weepers, very barely noticeable alum sting. A nice shave!

I've been moving this soap around to get to others for a while now, every time thinking, "Man this is some good smelling soap, I need to use it soon!" Well yeah probably 75% of the time I did actually open it and smell it. Anyhow I decided today was the day to finally use the wonderful No. 63. Whipped up a great lather with the Paladin using the SV method. Man this smells wonderful. The strength of scent is 3 of 5 on the puck and a 4.5 lathered. Yeah it smells great! It's a nice even manly smell consisting of sandalwood, spice, earthy, and some slight fruit, not citrus but more like melons. Did I mention I love this scent? :giggle:

3 passes and some touch up with the Vulcan and I'm BBS with no nicks, weepers, and just a tad bit of alum sting. A great shave!

Finished with the matching balm and some spritzes of the EdT. Dude!!!👍😎

Well that all for now. I have to take a couple of STOD pics for this week and then I'll hopefully be able to get caught up.
Hope everyone has a Fantastic and Safe 4 of July. I'm taking tomorrow off so 4 day weekend for me. Grilled some burgers and brats for lunch and the wife has a pork shoulder in the slow cooker for supper. May have a cigar later and an adult beverage. Looks like some rain/thunder headed this way just in time to cause people to have to vacate the fireworks shows. Should be gone by dark up not sure if my city will still do theirs. I can see most of if from my front yard as its only about 1 mile away.

Some really great shaves as always Chris! Hope your holiday was a great one and hope your weekend is wonderful!
