CBLindsay's brain droppings

Been a bit since I have updated my journal, although I have been meaning to for a week or two. The main obstacle for me providing updates is that I find myself otherwise occupied with "work" during the day and in the evening I put my regular computer away (so i don't work at home) and live on my ipad. I dislike making detailed or long posts using the ipad because its more difficult to type on. Such is life.

On the shaving front... I have managed to maintain a mostly everyday shave, with an occasional skipped day. I had to switch to a DE razor when shaving at the gym becasue days that inlcude arms/chest often leave my fine motor skills too compromised for an open blade. Until today my gear has been consitent, with the knotworks synthetic, Canadian soap (thats probably not the name but I know it has Canadian in it) rosemerry and lime Aristocrate DE and a Feather blade. Its all been rather routine. Today, I shook things up by swapping the razor, I used an everready with the new GEM blade I got from @Bullgoose. The razor is one I rarely use, a simple one with the BIG fat black handle. I like the big handle becasue it helps the old man grip. There was plenty of blood involved in today's shave but mostly from weepers here and there not from any real damage.

I had a couple very nice weekend shaves (after skipping a day or two) using one of my straight razors. I have mainly been using the tedalus for open blade shaves so the regular straight was a bit of a change. The most notable difference was the length of the blade, I got pretty used to the smaller blede length so navigating my face was a little odd.

On the home front, not a lot has changed. We bought my youngest daughter an old honda civic a few weeks ago and I have been doing some repairs and maintenance on it here and there. She gets her learner's permit soon so for now the car sits but eventually it will transport her to work and school. I am far from being a mechanic but my deeply rooted desire not to pay enormous amounts of $ to a mechanic makes me willing to turn wrenches and bust knucks as much as I can. I ran into some problems changing the spark plugs that made it take much longer than the few minutes and limitted cost I had promissed. The little rubber seals on a couple of the coil packs stuck on the plug so I had to dig them out and order new coils (red perfromance ones of course) so it took far longer than expected. Funny thing is I was able to change out the passenger side CV axle in about the same time as it took to change the plugs and coils. Alas, all that is left to do now is change the transmission fluid then its all fresh and ready to put more miles on.

I continue to go to the gym most week days and some weekend days. I have more than 90 gym days logged since starting in September. My weight has remained very close to were I started, with only a few pounds lost these past few months (NOT happy about that) but my physical health is notably improved. I have regained much of the muscle and bulk I once had while wrestling and have significantly improved strength. My goal was not to build massive muscles so much as it was to improve strength and stamina (while loosing weight) but there has been a siginifcant improvement in muscle mass recently. If I can loose another 30-40 pounds I will no doubt LOOK like I did while wrestling.

I have seen several doctors about my neck/arm issues that cause numbness in my right arm and hand but so far they have all been duds. I scheduled a visit to the ortho doc as suggested by my primary only to be told when I arrive that they don't do necks, so i was referred to a neuro surgeon (despite my insistance that I will NOT have surgery). The neuro surgeon said the nerve impingement in my neck is not a surgical case so she could offer no solutions beyond a referral to her colleage in neurology/pain management. When I pressed her for more she suggested I might try one of a couple drugs known to help with nerve pain like I have...but she would not preseribe it so I had to see my primary doc for a prescription. I visited my primary (a PA who is not inclined to think outside the box or think independently for that matter) only to find out she had no idea how to prescribe the recommened med since the neuro doc had not indicated a dosage. So she prescibed the lowest does available and said give it a try. 3 weeks later and no improvement I reached out to the neuro surgeon to have HER suggest a dosage and have my primary update the dosage. So thats done. When I called to schedule an appointment with the neurologist i was told the soonest appointment is in mid MARCH...so here I sit having visited 3 different doctors waiting to see the one who presumably will have a better solution.

This entry is getting a bit long but I did want to mention that a year ago today is when my first grandson was born. I'm not sure how we are supposed celebrate this day, nor how I feel about it, given how short his life was. None the less I feel it is important to celebrate his short life and his birthday is a good day to do so. So for those who are inclined to do so, raise a glass in honor of my grandson this evening if you would.

1/24/2024

Been a pretty busy week for me. Monday was of course a "holiday", which meant I didn't go to the office and did minimal work from home. Tuesday was our last trip to Disneyland for awhile, our annual pass expired and we decided not to renew it. All in all the visit was nice, not too busy and the weather was good. Wednesday was busy, it started with a blood letting at the local blood bank and quickly transistioned to a series of phone/video appointments. Yesterday was a bit slower paced and today I am purposfully not doing too much. I did manage to get some tax stuff done for my dad's estate and my own hellish return. Can't do much more until I have all the proper forms.

On the shave front... The holiday and Disney day afforded my an opportunity to use one of my old CBL test soaps and the fat boy I have on the counter. The shaves were nice but nothign to brag about. I have continued to hit the gym early in the mornign so yesterday and today I used what was in my gym bag. First Canadian lorretto lime, synthtic/burle brush and the GEM Jr. with fat handle (I think ALL GEM journors have the fat handle) loaded with the GEM blade I got from @Bullgoose. The last 2 shaves were far better than the first, this blade/razor combo seem to have hit its stride. I'll be honest, yesterdays shave was pretty awsome, so much so it left me stroking my face every now and then to admire how smooth I was. And this morning I was only just beigning to sprout new stubble.

According to the weather gurus on TV, the weather is supposed to turn cold and wet this weekend, we may even see snow. I am not holding my breath but I am also not planning anything big outside just in case. After seeing how our freinds in the south east are getign snow, I am holding out hope we get something here.

You are more than welcome to come get all you want. I'm willing to let it go for nothing.
If only I could. Seems the weather man lied again. The wind is blowing at its typical 50-60mph indicating there could be changes on the horizon but for now it’s dry and even a little warm. They still insist snow is possible but it will be a few days further out.

Hit the gym this morning with my youngest daughter. We did some leg stuff and she wanted to do a little back and arm work (she likes to feel the pump in her bicep) before she hit the pool for a mile. I did some intervals on the treadmill then sat in the sauna while she finished. To save on time I went ahead and showered and shaved at the gym. I continue to enjoy the GEM junior with the magic Bullgoose GEM blade. The shaves are pretty comfortable with what feels very close to straight razor results. I should probably toss the blade I gave in the razor now but I think it probably has many more shaves in it. I just wonder if the being stored in the gym back is going to accelerate its demise .

Yesterday was "arms and chect day" at the gym and I hit it pretty hard so I was in no condition to shave safely, so today's shave was on a couple day old beard. Today's hardware was a unique set up. My daughter got a nice 3d printer for Christmas (her brother is the 3d club teacher so he knows which printers are the best value etc) and she finally printed me a GEM blade SE razor. My son had printed me one several years ago but the printer's tolerances made for a pretty difficult to use razor. The one my Daughter printed me is modeled after the old Lather Catcher razors. The tolerances are very precise and the finished set up when loaded is REALLY nice. My only complaint might be how light the thing is, I am part gorilla so I like heavy razors. The print inclided a case and blade holder (which is what i was asking her to print) so now I have something I can toss in the gym bag and have whenever I want.

The software for the shave was an extra tub of CBL soap I had left unlabled, I beleive it is the inconcievable scent (I had hoped it was the smoked cedar). This stuff lathers up quick, easy and slick BUT the texture of the soap itself is soft enough I don't think it is going to hold up to the way I use the tub at the gym ...we will see. I lathered with an old Envy synthetic I picked up long ago. The knot is similar to if not exactly the older tuxedo synthtic knots, a good brush. I finished with a good rub down with the alum block and a splash of Masters' Cannibas flower scent. I like Masters but I find all of their spalshes to be soapy, they have a slight soapy scent and feel soapy on the skin. If I am remembering correctly Masters has gone ot of business, so I suppose I should enjoy my collection without complaining.

More about the shave. The printed razor loaded with a fresh GEM blade produced a fantastic shave. I am prety sure the fresh GEM blades are somehow TOO ready to shave but they settle in pretty quickly. The light weight of the razor ended up not being a problem, neither was finding the proper angle. I suppose I could just lay the flat part of the razor against my face like most GEM razors but this one felt like I should angle away a little otherwise it felt like I would press too hard against my face and risk injury. The shave was quite close and here I sit more than 6 hours later and I am still super smooth.

A quick FUNNY story.
So, being a soap guy i experimented with a batch of bath soap where the goal was to "plop" the soap onto a surface then smash it into a nice sized patty-like soap. I also experimented doing this with some shave soap. This particular soap looks a lot like an oatmeal cookie or bbq's hamburger patty (when in puck/patty form). Turns out this particular sample did not hold together well and began to fall apart whil eI was trying to use it. While they patty looks like a cookie or hamburger when intact, it looks a lot like ...well...poop when it crumbles and fall to the floor. Not a problem when in your own shower but in a locker room shower it is a great way to make friends and influence people.

Time for a quarterly update and maybe a few brain droppings.

I must admit I am not shaving all that regularly. I am not growing a bear or anything like that, just skpping 1,2,3 and sometimes 4 days at a time. While the extra stubble look isn't bad, I am not the kind of guy who looks "rugged" or "stylish" with a sybbly beard so I still need to shave for best appearance. Funny thing is the shaves are generally pretty enjoyable and I feel really good when I have a fresh shaved face so I really SHOULD shave more often. My gear has largely been limitted to what I take with me in my gym bag but at home I enjoy using the Tedalus or maybe a Fat Boy. I am blown away by how efficient and pleasurable that 3D printed razor my daughter made me (loaded with the GEM blade I bought from Bullgoose) has been. I continue to use the SAME blade I loaded in January with results that suggest minimal degredation of the blade edge. I do rinse and dry the blade using the electric hand dryer but other than that I just keep it in the razor/case.

I have not shaken up the software much, using CBL Miracle Max at the gym durign the week and one of a few different soaps at home (JabonMan, Vintage Velobra and maybe a few random CBL samples) so I have little to report there. My huge collection sits rather idle at the moment.

Brain Dropping:
While surfing the 'Tube last week I ran accross a reference to a 2014 speech by General McMaster where he suggested changing the world starts with making oyur bed. I'm sure you guys remember the speech so I won't bother pasting a transcript (google it if you must). The basic idea behind his start by making your bed idea was that if you start your day with even a small accomplishment you are more likely to be in the right frame of mind to be successful. And he also said that even if the rest of your day absoltely sucked "at least you come home to a well made bed". Like me, I am sure you see the paralel between making your bed first thing and shaving first thing. Mindlessly driving a 5 blade cartridge over spray foam is unlikely to qualify as a true accomplishment SO going the traditional wet shaving route ensures you feel the proper level of accomplishement to be successful each and every day.

In other news:
In addition to being busy these past couple months with the typical "fix this" "fix that" kind of stuff around the house, I have managed to squeeze in some camping time in a new (to us) trailer. My wife decided our micro sized trailer was just too small to enjoy so she began searching used options around us. Un fortunately the selection was pretty poor so we ended up at a Camping world. We got a better sized and somewhat newer trailer for about twice the price she had been lookong at but all in all its a pretty affordable upgrade with fewer problems to fix (bonus). Our new purchase inspired my son to buy a new truck and pick up an old trailer so he can upgrade from a tent. We will be going out this weekend to a local campground to help him learn all the important stuff and find all the things that need to be tweaked or fixed.

My youngest daughter started her new lifeguard job for the town this week and BOY is she excited about her first paycheck. She's pretty driven and a good worker so I expect she will pick up all the shifts others are quick to abandon so her future paychecks will be even more exciting.

On the health front:
I continue to go to the gym 5 days a week with some days being more aggressive than others. I am definately seeing changes to my phyiscal appearance depsite losing what I consider a minimal amount of weight over the past 3-4 months. My doc says it "reconstituting", I am losing fat but building muscle so my shape and size are changing more than my weight. I have definately had a terrible time finding pants and belts that fit well and look good. My waist and stomach are smaller but my thighs and shoulders/chest are larger so finding clothes that fit without looking silly or falling down has been a challenge.

I finally got an appointment to get an the steroid injection in my neck (in a couple more weeks), I am hoping it is worth all the hoops and waiting. The doc says he expects it will provide releif but is suggesting I use the time when I am feeling releif to aggressively train my neck and back and to increase flexibility. He feels i might be able to delay or prevent the return of symptoms if I improve my physical condition. I am game of course. I have been focusing more on my neck, back and core of late and have had mixed results. I get short perods of improvment followed by periods of more intense pain/numbness followed by a mix of mild improvment and moderate symptoms. One consistent thing is the act of shaving always results in numbness in my hand and fingers by the time I am done.

That's about all for now. enjoy!

Well, time for another check in.

I have been less consistant with shaving, often skipping several days or more. I DID shave today but I think it has been at least 5-6 days since I shaved last. Most of my shaves ocur at the gym so I am sticking with what I pack in my gym bag. Today was the Gillette Aristocrate loaded with what I believe was a Wizmet blade with several shaves on it. The soap was the soon to be announced/released custom job for Hombres Barber Shop...a truly enjoyable soap that loads great, takes on a TON of water, is super slick and smells lovely. Scraping away the 5-6 day growth was difficult with the Aristocrat being fairly mild but it worked out in the end. I finished with a rub of alum and a bit of Apothacary oil and a splash of a random stuff from my home shave cave.

I continue to hit the gym on a mostly regular basis (daily BUT some days I do a shorter workout). The physical results are begining to show but I do find myself with a few ne aches and pains curtesy of my increasing age. I had the steroid shot in my spine about 3 weeks ago and sadly I have had no releif from it. The doctor said "sometimes it doesn't help" and offered to explore other options when I visit him next. Problem is, I can't get another appointment with him as his scheduler says he has NO openings for the rest of time (as far out is whatever they set appointments). Alas, I live in so California where our social/political choices have led to healthcare access being a myth so I guess I will continue to focus on improving my physcical state in hopes of bringing some non-medical releif.

On the home front...
We just finished another round of birthdays, bringing my youngest to 16 and my oldest to 29.
My 16 year old daughter is still learning to drive but has a really cool job. She was hired by a local town to be a lifeguard. Being one of the only public pools available in a 20 mile radius and temps being as high as they have been, the pool has been quite busy AND they have had a lot of rescues. Last weekend she had her first "save" and was recognized as being the first of the new crop to log a save. Apparently she did very well, reacted as she was expected and executed as she was supposed to. YESTERDAY she had a much more traumatic "save" that involved a lot of panic/confusion and the fire/paramedics being called out. In this case a young girl had been stung by a bee and had a bad reaction. My daughter did very well but she did not get the backup she needed from newer guards who were confused. My daughter found herself calling out instructions to other guards without them doing anything she was calling out. Fortunately a more senior and well trained guard stepped in to assist. The whole event left my daughter a little rattled but in the end the girl was fine and even returned to the pool later in her shift. I am very proud of how she hendled the event and suspect she will continue to grow in her position.

We have a few camping trips planned in the comming weeks so I expect my summer will fly by. Hopefully it will be rather uneventful and enjoyable.

Figure since I have a few extra minutes this morning I will give a journal update.

Since my last entry I have had a birthday, making me ANOTHER year older. I am happy to report that while I am a year older I actually feel better than I did last year AND an enjoying overall better health. My hair is much more gray now and the gray in my beard now dominates the facial landscape. Oddly, the texture of my hair has changed. I have always had fairly straight hair that had a tendency to get curly the longer it got but now my hair has developed a kind of wavy texture even when short. I suspect it is a result of some blood anomolies (low iron/anemia) more than an age thing but I have also been using alum and/or aftershave to style my hair and @BarberDave warned that the alum might be drying (although my hair feels pretty healthy despite the new curves).

I continue to shave less frequently than usual, with a good number of those shaves being done at the gym. I recently bought a large box of Astra blades to give to my oldest daughter's boyfriend and I put a few in my shave kit. As long as I have been at this game I have never tried an Astra blade, so I was eager to give them a shot, I have to say, the Astra blade is VERY enjoyable. I have used them in a couple different razors now and the result is consitently comfortable. I have stuck mostly with Doc Holiday and the as of yet unreleased Pierre Cardin scented or Patchouli scented tonsorial soap, so my rotation has been pretty basic but enjoyable. I have ALSO confirmed that the Feather PRo (standard ones in black box) are FAR less enjoyable than the Pro-guard or other guarded blade. The Tedalus is a pretty forgiving razor when loaded with a guarded blade...and FAR less forgiving with a standard blade.

I mentioned my making shaving kit for my daughter's boyfriend. About a month ago my duaghter told me she shaved her boyfriend's face using the gear I had given her and he really liked it AND it seemed to help with the irritation he had on his lower neck. It seems he is an electric razor guy but started getting more and more irritation so he was shaving less. I put together a kit that included a nice synthetic brush, a modern adjustible razor, a bunch of Astra blades and a tube of Prorasso white (sensitive skin) shave cream. I figured I should get him started with the easiest stuff on earth then he can choose some stuff from my shop. I also warned him that alternating between DE and Eletric may cause the electric to be even less effective and suggested he try sticking with the DE. No word yet on his long term thoughts but his early impressions were positive.

In other news. I joined the gym about 11 months ago and I have continued my regular workouts, which seems to be making a more noticable difference despite my SLOW weight loss progress. Like @Cvargo , My pant size has dropped significantly. I used to wear a 40" and had some 42"'s for backup, I COULD wear 38" wrangler's but they were less comfortable. There came a time earlier this year that I officially got rid of all my 42"'s and only have 40" dress pants. NOW the 38" jeans are very clearly too big and I can comfortably wear 36" jeans (which can be a little loose around the waist too). The main obsticle in going smaller with dress pants are my legs, my leg muscles are developed enough that smaller pants won't fit them. I have also gone down to size XL shirts in most cases. Probably a month-6wks ago I srated doing some specific core excercise intended to help me heal a significant deparation of stomach muscle (Diastasis Recti). Happily, I am seeing meaningful improvement and suspect I COULD see near complete resolution by the end of the year. Along with these core focused exercises I have started focusing more on upper back devlopment, Obviously I cant SEE the results but I can feel them. I recently began to notice the pain and numbness in my right arm is less AND I actually have prolonged periods of no pain or numbness.

On the work front. I got a call at the end of June that no one in my business nejoys getting, the call was from the state securities examiner notifying me that I was scheduled for an eudit/exam. At a minimum these things can be a significant intrusion and quite stresfull, they also have the potential to be VERY painful and if you have significant deficiencies they can be expensive. Fortunatly for me things went very well. The examiner was helpful and approached the whole event as a teaching/learning oportunity rather than a puniitve one. He dug into areas I never expected looked at my LinkIn profile, searched the internest for mentiones of my business etc) but was only able to find minor things to fix. The MAIN point of stress and a potentially significant violation centered arounf my financial documents. In my business I am required to keep very detailed and accurate financial records. Unfortunately the accountign tool I was usign was simply unable toproduce the GAAP formated reports they required. While I had been keeping detailed records (that the examiner was able to see when I walked him through my record keeping proceedures) I was unable to make the program provide the required reports. I ended up switching to a different program then rebuilt the records, the process was tedious but it resulted in clean results and the abilty to print the reports they asked for. Again, the examiner approached it as a teaching/learning oportuity and was quite helpful even in areas he had no obligation to be. I am happy to report that this week I got my final/closign letter indicating the exam was complete and I have nothing further to address.

Parting thoughts. As many of you know, I own a few jeeps and we like to go out and beat up some trails in my old YJ. Well this is a year that I am required to smog check when renewing the registration. I have never had any problems with smog checks but shortly after my last check I had the IAT sensor go bad while we were on the trail, as a result the engine dumped a huge amount of gas into the exhaust. Well, the damn thing failed the check. It runs SUPER clean in terms of CO and hydrocarbons but it has higher than allowed NOX levels. Assuming no major mechancal issues or a bad Catalytic converter this typically means 1 of 3 things, a bad EGR valve (these jeeps don't have an EGR valve), a timing issue (these jeeps don't have the ability to manually adjust timing) or heavy carbon build up. Given that only the NOX was high, we assumed it was a carbon build up issue rather than a failed Cat. Compression tests seemed to suport this idea and I scoped the cylinders and did see some build up. So i ran a bunch of cleaner through it, changed the plugs and wires, changed the O2 sensor and air intake sensor again, aired up the tires as hard as they could go, filled with premium gas and changed the oil. STILL didn't pass. I still need to do a backpressure test to see if there might be a clog but my working assumption is that the IAT failure issue resulted in the Cat being flooded with gas, killing the NOX scrubbing ability while not impacting the other scrubbers. I have ordered a CARB approved catalytic converter and am going to swap it out and probably put a new muffler on at the same time. For those that don't know, CARB approved devices cost 2-3 times or more than the typical EPA approved stuff, this applies to everything from snorkels and cold air intakes to catalytic converters and everything in between. A $150 EPA cat costs about $700 when CARB approved so swapping a cat isn't something to be taken lightly. UNFORTUNATELY California keeps lowering the allowable NOX levels (they DID lower the liit since my last test which is partly to blame for this most recent fail) so even a new Cat and perfectly functioning engine may NEVER pass again.

Good to hear from you, Chris. 👍

Time to retire the Jeep?
Jeep is not going to be retired. I'll move to Arizona where it isn't required to be smog checked. My bigger fear is that my daughter's jeep which is a few years newer might one day find itself in a similar position. She drives hers everyday so it being down would be a bigger issue.

WHAAAT? Is this ANOTHER post? YUP!

For some reason I felt compelled to make another entry into my journal for everyone's enjoyment. What prompted this deisre? Well...I shaved yesterday and had mixed emotions about it.

I started with at least 5 days of beard growth and opted to use Eufros' Ylang Ylang soap lathered with my SV brush. IT felt good to face lather, it was like giving the beard a good scratch. As is usually the case, the lather was quick and easy to build but was fairly dry and was difficult to get "wetter". I chalked this up to the extreme heat, but later in the shave (when I reloaded the brush for goo measure) I found that I could get it a bit wetter with the extra bit of soap in the brush. Still, the dry air made my skin and lather dry. The razor was my "Vorpal" spiked tip, touched up on the pasted fabric strop and finished on flax linen and leather. This razor was among the first to be used on my journey (it served me well during the first 45 days) so I should be failry comfortable with it despite its spike tip. Almost immediately it felt odd in hand, the tail seemed as it if was too short, despite looking fairly tipical. It felt particularly off when shaving the blind side of my face (right hand left side down stroke). Rather than being completely comfortable I felt a litte trepidation. The second pass is where I felt the most unease, I struggled to acheive the grip I wanted/expected and the lather really lacked slickness which caused a lot of sticking. Again, since I shave pretty much exclusivly with my right hand (I use my left for only a portion of my face) it one side felt like it was easier or more comfortable than the other. I latheredup for th e3rd ATG pass and everything just felt wrong. The main, most notable issue was the lather had ceased to be slick at all. I reloaded and relathered to achieve a better quality but only found modest improvement, which ultimately left me feeling too uncomfortable to coninue with the straight razor. I switch to the Fat Boy to finish the shave and still felt the lather was off but not so much so that it harmed the shave. Happily, the end result was bloodless and without irritation.

I don't mean to bash Eufros with this post, it has been a really enjoyable soap (i have a few great scents) that usually lathers well and always smells great. I am not even sure Eufros is still being made but if it is and you have a chance to get some, do it. Eufros ALWAYS smells fantastic with a powerful scent. Unless he has changed his formulation or offers multiple bases, it is essentially a "basic non-tallow" soap base with no particular focus on bells and whistles other than awesome fragrance. I am trying to recall whether I have found it to lack slickness (for straight razor use) in the past of if this was a one off.

Last thing. I have had an idea rattling around in my head that I should probably post in the CBL storefront but I'll put it here for now (as a reward for those who read my ramblings and brain droppings). I have made several random soaps, both shaving and non-shaving and while cleaning up the ol soap lab I have found reminants of some of my older stuff. A lot of these things were either test/proof of concept items or things I made for personal use (usually at the request of my wife) and just have a lot more than I will ever use. I wouldn't feel comfortable selling these things as regular offerings but I think they would make really fun grab-bag items AND I would really like to get this stuff out of my lab. I have done grab-bags in the past and they were received very well. So for now I am considering how I might do this. If there is something you might be looking for feel free to PM me, I might have it and we can work out a fair price or trade.

A straight up shave …

I thought I would post a good ‘ol shave in my journal today.
I’ve been lazy and not shaved for several weeks. I usually DO participate in my own little “no shave November’ to pay personal homage to those I have lost to cancer (my mom, my day and my wife’s dad to name a few) and in honor of those who have survived cancer (my wife, my wife’s mom). While others might observe a form of no shave November in honor of general cancer awareness etc, I have done so over several years as a personal, silent acknowledgment of those close to me who faced cancer. This year my October laziness turned into a 3 week beard that was shaved off this morning. I still sport my goatee but no longer have the full beard.

Today’s shave was super simple but oh so lovely. The brush was the TSC custom SV, the soap…a chunk of Cella pressed into my own custom CBL wood bowl, the razor was the Tedalus loaded with a Feather pro guard (several shaves on the blade). The post shave was a bit of alum, some CBL witch hazel (I nailed it with this one ) then some Fine Accouterments Italian citrus and a spritz of ADP.

I am truly amazed at how easy it was to peel the beard from my face. It was seriously like peeling an orange, the beard came off with no effort leaving me with nothing but a baby butt smooth face. It’s shaves like this that make shaving so pleasing.

I’ve got a LOT going on in my life at the moment so I will probably need to make a non-shave related entry to get caught up. But for now let’s just bask in the glory of today’s stellar shave.

Still waffling between well groomed and semi-hobo. I had a great shave last Saturday but haven't shaved since and I'm sporting a pretty rough scruff at the moment. I will most likely shave tonight or first thing tomorrow morning so I'm looking SMOOTH for the turkey.

Speaking of turkey, my youngest son has offered to host the Thanks Giving festivities but lef tme with the task of making the turkey. He had hoped I would fry it but I haven't been able to do that for several years because my large pot got a little hole in it (how?). My plan is to spatchcock it and smoke it in the morning. No brine just some injected butter and seasonings. I have found that sprinkling some cream of tartar on the skin along with the salt and pepper helps to make it more crispy...I'll prep everything tonight and get on it in the morning.

This Thanks Giving should be interesting. My son's girlfriend moved in with him this month (After planning to do so for a while now) and they have invited her mom, sister and brother (possibly grandma but I'm not sure). We have never met her family but based on how they have treated her in the past and how they treated her as she was moving out I suspect things will get a little frosty. Fortunately, my wife and I don't feel the need to impress anyone or "make friends" with people who don't bring us joy...so we have nothing to lose regardless. My only concern is that my son and his girlfirend have put a lot of thought and effort into putting together a nice family dinner and I would not like to see any unique drama spoil thier event.

In other news. My 16 yr old daughter recently got her drivers license so she is technically legal to drive (which could come in handy should we need a designated drive for tomorrows event) BUT mom still won't let her drive on her own. Part of this is just mom not being willing to let go of her baby but a good amount of it is due to a need to demonstrate better skills. We live in an area where running lights/stop signs and doing stupid things is more common than not so developing solid defensive (and offensive) driving skills is a must. Of course my son's accident a couple years ago has shown us how easily another car/driver can change lives. The biggest impact of my daughter getting her license (Even though she won't be driving herself for a while) is that we now get to pay to insure her as if she WERE drving all out cars. This added a couple hundre dollars a month to our bill. Oh and I just got notice that our home insurance will double starting January becasue some unknown entity has declared our home to be in a high risk fire zone (it's not). I spoke with a friend of mine whose family owns an insurance company and they feel we can make some reasonble changes to our coverage to mitigate the increase.

Speaking of insurance.... I must vent! Between the car, home and health insurance I now spend more than TWICE as much on insurance each month than I pay for my entire mortgage. Add in the various life insurance polices, cyber insurance, E&O and office policy and the insurance obligation is more than what a full time fast food worker earns!. I don't qualify for subsidies so I have to pay the actual cost (not the one the ACA overlords want you to THINK it costs) and the cost went up 30% for me this year. On a positive note (relatively speaking) I do have access to a national group plan for people who run businesses like mine so the coverage is pretty good compared to the plan offered through the market place.

Arizona here we come?! Yes, we have purchased some land in Arizona (about 2-3 hrs north of @BarberDave) and have plans in the works to build on that land in 2026. My plan was NOT to build/move so quickly but my wife has already started packing (not joking) so I suspect I will have to get something built by this time next year. On one hand I look forward to having more open space and a better view of the night sky BUT I am not looking forward to all the challenges it creates for my business or the added expense being located in 2 states creates. Office space in/near the area we bought land is pretty scarce so I may just build an office on my property.
