CBLindsay's brain droppings

Wonderful to hear from you, Chris. I hope the family dinner goes well. It’s a shame family gatherings can sometimes be stressful. As usual, I had to use my Google Machine™ to look up a word you used. Here is a spatchcocked turkey:

Happy Thanksgiving. 👍

Awesome Chris, you will love it here, and me and Sharon being so close it is a cherry on top , LOL Welcome to being a Zonie!, and just think you will never have to change a clock or watch again, YAY

Time for a few more brain droppings.

My lazy bum streak has continued, I am not shaving everyday but I am not purposfully growing out a facial garden either. When I do shave I have enjoyed a few basic soaps and either the Tedalus or a Gillette Red tip. The soaps have ranged from Blades Grimm "smoulder" (a basic soap with a fantastic scent) to Longrifle, Cella or even a CBL soap or two. Whether I shave or not I still splash of some aftershave after the shower. My splash of choice these days has been from the "vintage" section of the closet...those old favorites from clubman, lustray, Alpa and even a few from Royal. The weather is cooler (sort of) so I have added the Veg to the rotation too.

On the healthy me front, I contnue to hit the gym most days and have lost more weight. My smart scale still says I am fat and old but less fat and less old than I was a year ago. Between the weight loss and consistent gym work I am now able to fit into the shirt, jacket, pants and boots I wore when I got married 32 years ago. Alas, the sport coat I wore in 12th grade is just too small.

Not really a legit comprehensive shave related journal post, but a brain dropping none the less.

Somewhere between Christmas and this last weekend I went a good week or maybe a few days more without shaving, and to be honest I kind of liked the look and feel. I chaved /trimmed down my typically present goatee so it wasn't so obvious and I think if i did a little work around the edges I could have sported a nice looking hipster beard. Alas, i decided to go clean shaven Sunday evening and have maintained since.

What caused me to go clean shaven (keeping the signature goatee)? Well, my wife has been on a cleaning, organizing AND PACKING mode of late...so i decided to do a little cleaning and organizing of my own stuff. While cleaning up the soap labs I found I had my hones spread all over the place and found dozens of straight razors I had set aside to repair and or hone. Even after gathering all my stones and marvelling at how wonderful they all are, I am still not terribly motivated to dive into the repairs and only modestly more interested in honing anythign...so I might batch up the razors and list them on ebay (or MAYBE here in the BST). As part of my organizing I decided I would return my razors to the large Herfador's I had previsously stored them in. As it turns out, I have aquired more razors than I once had so I needed to buy another large herfador so store the rest. *side note, these herfadors (made to hold 40 cigars) make very nice straight razor homes as long as they were always kept dry. Anyway, while going throug the razors I decided on a few I want to bring back to rotation and that lead to me shaving Sunday night.

The gear for Sunday was a bit intimidating. I used the synthetic horse hair brush (always reliable) to lather up some of my CBL WoolFat knock off and shaved with the 1.25" chopper Kamisori. The software was nice (it seems to me meeting or exceeding my expectations) but that razor is a frightening beast. The edge was QUITE smooth and efficient but after using the Tedalus for so long this Kamisori style chopper was a bit difficult to handle.

Last night i dug out the 1970's Schick injector. sadly it was not as wonderful as I had expected. Same software but the blade I left in the injector from the last shave was not worthy. The shave went ok but not as good as I have come to be accustomed to.

Do you have a preference for different soaps depending on shaving with a straight edge vs. a safety razor, or is it about the same?

Not so much a preference for different soaps but straight razors require (or at least benefit from) a thinner or wetter lather than what I might use with DE or SE safety razor. In most cases a wetter/thinner lather can be slicker, which is also necessary for the straight razor. It’s also important (or beneficial) for the lather to be easily/quickly rinsed from the blade when using a straight, so a thick clingy lather isn’t always a desirable thing. Fortunately, I am accustomed to wiping the blade on a sponge so a clingy or thick lather isn’t too troublesome.
Some soaps aren’t as versatile as others so achieving a stable, wetter/thinner lather isn’t easily done so they won’t be used when I use a straight.

Well, last nights shave didn't go as planned.

Wife headed out to sit in the spa so i decided i would take a hot shower and enjoy a nice straight razor shave. I grabbed one of my Spike razors from the drawer and preceeded to hit the old fire hose for 100 and the leather for maybe 50 laps or so. I filled the sink with hot water and commenced to soaking my SV TSC anniversary brush in anticipation it would soon be lathering some CBL Dragon's Pub (freshly made and soon to be released on the CBL website.) As I prepared to enter the shower my wife returned from her SHORT trip to the spa and informed me the spa had gone cold..add another thing to my list of things to repair.

Anyway, I proceeded to shower then prepared myself for the shave. Lathered up a nice lather and set steel to skin. In VERY short order I felt the square tip of this 9/16ish razor dig slightly into my skin. I backed off and repositioned. Then as I finished my first stroke or two on my right side I felt the tip dig in again, no real damage done but a warnign that this thing will bite. Several more strokes then as I crossed the centerline on my neck I felt a wonderfully excriciating pain as the tip dug in again. This time it left about an inch long mark that eventually began to bleed. By this time I was getting frustrated and even a little scared. So I set the razor down and grabbed the ret tip to finish the first pass. I knew better than to try the side to middle strokes on my neck but I did redeploy the Spike for the rest of the shave (AFTER i blunted the tip on the counter). The rest of the shave was uneventful and the post shave alum only provided feedback on those 3 spots I felt the tip dig in. I finished with all the lovely post shave stuff at my disposal. A splash of witch hazel, a dab of apothecary oil and even some tallow balm. Then a few heavy doses of Lustary Bay Rum.

As i sit here 12ish hours later it is clear the shave wasn't as close as I would have liked. Since I know I put this razor in the drawer a couple years ago honed and ready to go, I can only assume time has rendered the fine edge a little less ready to shave than when I put it away. Sadly, it appears i will need to go back and touch up many of my old straights if I want to get those really close and comfortable shaves. AND now that I have fallen a bit out of practice it might be a good idea to blunt those sharp squar tips a bit.

Hell yeah! The return of dragons pub!!! I’m excited, but less excited about your shave. I know exactly where you’re at, the old square point wedges can and will bite. I learned after several misadventures to stop after the first bite and blunt the edge. Though that’s no fun, they were made that way for a reason(likely because it was cheaper than shaping the toe). I always try to use them unblunted, but sometimes you just have to. I have a spike and a red imp that has to be blunted. Glad to hear you’re breaking those lonely blades out of purgatory!

I am a fan of keeping things as they were made or intended so I really don't like the idea of honing away the tip but after neing bit I am more open to the idea of blunting it a bit. I have 2 Spikes that still have the original squared tip but I have a couple others where the tip has been rounded a bit over time. Same with the Red Imp BUT the imp I have is a much smaller blade.

And I STILL have that old puck of Dragons pub sitting on my shipping table to send to you. This new batch is a little different in that it is more ROS than Dragons blood. Good but not the same as the prior version.

So, I was going to do another home spa straight razor shave last night but things didn't go as planned. I eagerly retrieved one of my Genco Easy Aces from its box only to find the blade had begun to rust. Not just a little around the tip but the whole thing. I tried rubbing it with flitz but the rust is more substantial than what the flitz was able to address SO I must take more aggresive action. I went ahead and stropped the blade on a pasted cloth strop to clean up as much rust on the edge as possible so it can wait until I get around to doing the restoration. I was so delfated by this finding that I decide to give up on the shave entirely. A quick scan of some of the other razors in the drawer revealed a good number that had at least some amount of rust somewhere on the non-shaving portion of the blade. I guess I will have to devote some time to restoring my collection. In the past I used to work on one a night, at this pace it will take me the better part of this year to get the job done.

I am hopeful I will be able to get some of the minor rust dealt with using something like a green scrubby but I think I will need to go with more aggresive measures for the Aces. A potential side benefit is I think I can teach my daughter to hone so I wont have to do it all alone.

Woah @CBLindsay do you have some condensation issues happening or do you think you had a poison pill amongst the good blades? At any rate, I'm sorry you had to find them in such a condition. :-(

we live in a very dry climate and I had a desicant packet in the box where the Aces was kept, so it was a surprise for sure. hard to say why I am getting rust but i can say the razors I kept in the smaller herfador had no rust. So i guess going forward I will focus on getting the razors dry after use then store them in the airtight herfador.

Most of the razors I own and use were in need of some TLC when I got them so I know I can bring them back but i just don't have the time or energy to do it like it did 6 years ago.

A few more brain droppings for those who hunger for them...

First the shaving. I shaved a couple days ago with moderately acceptable results. I started with a nice hot shower and a full scrubby face wash, so I was about as well prepped as one could reasonably be. The lather in this case was provided by my SV brush and a sample of Stropp Shopp Russian Tea (provided to me by a CBL Soap customer). The Blade was a fresh F'ing sharp blade loaded in the Red Tip. I really don't like using samples because they are so unpredictable when loading. To combat this I smeared a nice smear onto a rubber razor wipe then loaded until it was GONE. I enjoyed the scent and was able to see how it is very similar to the CBL version of Russian tea but also somehow different. The shave was fine but i fear the F'ing sharp blade is not so wonderful. In this case the blade was not in pristine condition as it was flooded with aftershave during shipping, so perhaps that played a roll. The result was a shave that was a little les comfortable than typical and not as close on the jaw line as desired.

So here I sit 48 hours or so later and I have a wonderful amount of stubble waiting to be scraped away. If I am able to do so, I will perform the bear removal ritual tonight using one of my lovely old straight razors and whatever soap is pressed into my vintage old spice mug (I think its a CBL mix but could include some odd samples of other stuff too.)

In other news. My very old great dane died this weekend. I am pretty sure I live in a sort of vortex that allows animals to live well beyond the typical, we had a rabbit that lived 10yrs or more and this dog was at least 12 years old. We anticipated she would not survive LAST winter let alone another summer...yet here we are. Fortunately we had really good rains reently so digging a DEEP hole to bury her was not overly difficult. Alas, her passing and the holiday allowed me to do some wood fence repair that had been needed so I fnished that off with minimal stress.

In other, other news. Late last week I found that the water pressure in the house was WONDERFULLY increased. As much as I enjoyed the awesome pressure I knew better than to ignore it. A quick pressure test revealed the presure after the regulator was 120psi (double what it should be). Fortunately with a little work I was able to locate a well priced replacement at Lowes and had it swapped out rather quickly.

Yet MORE news.
My youngest daughter has had her drivers license for several months now but mom was not ready for her to drive herself anywhere. Well that changed yesterday. Granted, my wife followed her to work but she did let her drive home unescorted . And she was allowed to driver herself to work this morning for her 6:45 private swim lessons. I expect she will be allowed to driver herself to/from work now but any additional trips will probably be limitted.
It is worth pointing out that at just 16 years old, my daughter has completed high school and will be graduating community college in June. She has also continued to work with the loacal town's recreation department. So in theory she is as responsible as a young driver could be.

Well, I feel like I have said everythign that needs to be said so I will sign off.

That’s awesome!

Leslie would be proud.

Chris - so nice to scroll a few pages back and get re-aquainted with your brain droppings. Very glad to read you are well...and honestly, it's always strangely assuring to me to read that I a not the only one to experience so-so shaves where gear doesn't behave as you want it to...

Sooo many brain droppings so little time.

There's been a lot going on here in the land of CBL, some worth sharing here on the forum some not so much. I'll start with the freshes droppings and go from there.

While out with the wife this weekend something happened that brought to mind an old saying (NOT a Chinese proverbe but we can say it is if it makes you happy), it goes something like this; "only when a mosquito lands on your testicles, will you truly learn there is always a way to solve a problem without anger or violence" . Well, now that I beging to type out my thought on this event I realize I may have placed more significance on this event than it required...

What was this event you ask? We went to the theater to see a movie and when we asked for 2 tickets the mosquito at the counter said "two REGULAR tickets?" I was initially puzzled by his response, of course I want two REGULAR tickets, what other tickets are there? Is there a skybox somewhere? a private viewing room? what OTHER options are there? As my wife stifled a giggle it hit me, the OTHER option was a SENIOR ticket. My status as a middle aged man had just been attacked. or more likely, again, as I think about it in restrospect, my WIFE'S status as a young woman had just been attacked. I had two options here, the first being anger and vilence ("what do you mean? are you calling us OLD? get me your manager you little...") or peaceful restraint ("oh yes, we would like 2 SENIOR tickets young man"). I opted for the later and recieved $2 off both tickets. SCORE!. Then I adjusted the box of DOTS i had in my back pocket and the bag of cornnuts in my front pocket and grabbed the bag of popcorn and drink while my wife scurried off to the old ladies room to powder her nose. When she returned, my wife was laughing and smiling as she remarked that according to the website the senior discount applies to those 65 or older. (side note- we are NOT even in our 60's). So clearly my wife's choice to let her grey hair grow out is already yielding financial returns.

Speaking grey hair. I had not shaved my beard since early last week so by Sunday evening I had a pretty solid crop of grey wiskers taking hold. I also had a small bit of left over CBL soap in a tub from a project I had been working on for one of our forum members and some extra time on my hands. So I filled the sink with hot water, prepared a HOT towel in the microwave and set out for a spa quality shave. The soap was a blend of several related but not necessarily complementary scents but it lathered up nice. Wanting to continue, even of only half heartedly, the month of Williams, loaded and latherd upon the puck of Williams I had sitting there too. The result was a massive amount of wonderful lather, enough for several passes with the Tedalus and a few passes with the Redtip just for fun. When all was done, i had a wonderfully smooth face and a properly trimmed goatee staring back at me. I finished with a good cold water rinse and pondered what aftershave I should use. A splash of Captains Choice CO9T and life was good.

I've said too much already BUT i really do need to get this last part off my chest.
For YEARS I have lived with wide open space all around me, only to be boxed in my new homes a couple years ago. A new renter moved in next door (the garage side, furthest from my bedroom) and the have a nice 4x4 Ram truck with a Cummins Turbo diesle engine. This means the neighbors on BOTH sides own diesle trucks and BOTH feel the need to remote start and warm them up before driving away. The neighbor on my bedroom side likes to start his at 4:30 am while the other has a more random schedule but is pretty consistent about his 6:30ish am saturday warm up. The Ram truck has the loudest engine/exhaust possible so I can hear that thing running from my bedroom with a pillow on my head. To make it all worse, this guy's turbo spoolign up sound like an old shop-vac and power washer running at the same time (litterally, no joke). Not only does this add an additional layer of noise, it REALLY irritates my dog. My dog is the laziest bulldog on earth but he will come alive for 2 things, remote controlled cars and vacuums/blowers. So it has become a real circus thanks to the new neighbor.

hmmm Senior Tickets, upset at neighbors? The Term "Get off my Lawnt" comes to mind Old/young man. We been playing the Senior card, since at 50 you are AARP qualified. So now me being soon to be 61 and the better have, oh lets say a bit older and "truly qualified" we have saved THOUSANDS. So the initial bruise to the Ego has been financially justified. Although I do not have gray hair, I find it fun now to be Reverse Carded when I ask for the discount, and it is nice to have the ego stroked when they say " you dont look over 40" It does get am a dirty look from the Avocado, of which I chuckle.....

As to the house with the noise, you will be in the land of Zona soon, where open spaces are truly that LOL
