CBLindsay's brain droppings

Wednesday June 19

With all that has been going on of late it was a little shocking to look down and see that today is June 19, my mom's birthday. My mom has been dead 6 years now, in some ways it feels like a lifetime ago and in others it seems only days ago.

Life on the homefront seems to be settling down a bit, the next couple weeks will be key in determining just how much better or worse things will be the rest of this year. I won't go into detail here (simply isn't the place to do so) but I will say that life offers a variety of experiences and you never know when you will be surprised with an experience that tests your fortitude or one that celebrates the work you've done.. Good or bad life keeps on a coming at you.

About the shaves... Since the last check in I have been sticking with mostly the same hardware/software. @Dave in KY was kind enough to let me test drive his Weck Surgical Prep single edge razor so I have devoted a good amount of time to giving it a real shake-down. The blade is the same as what I would be using in the Weck Sextoblade so the shave feel and efficiency is a known quantity. The function and ergonomics were a bit unique but once dialed in it has been a real no-brainer, delivering smooth and comfortable shaves in minutes. Watching Dave shave with a Durham duplex this morning (with less success than desired) was a lot like what it looks like to shave with this Weck single edge razor. The size and basic appearance of the two is quite similar ...but the Weck actually works because the blade is widely available. It is a shame these things aren't more prevelant, I am sure they would have a large following. In fact, I would be surprised if one on the few niche razor designers doesn't develop a razor that uses the hair shaper blade. They have done ones that use GEM blades and ones that use Feather AC type...why not a hair shaper blade? I'd buy one. Weck has provided a great template, lets hope we see one someday.

I did a hotel shave video yesterday but I don't think I will post it anywhere because it doesn't seem to add any new or exciting information contained in it. I WILL post a few photos of the new smoker in action and maybe some of the results. I made a tri-tip, pork ribs, armadillo eggs and even a pan of dark chocolate brownies ....mmm mmm good.

Yep, the Durham Duplex needs a tilt in it's design to make it more user friendly like the Weck but the blade would be the issue regardless. Thanks for watching Chris (y)

I wish you all the best, Chris. Life sure has its way of rocking your world without warning, hang on for the ride, for better or worse. I think I can say we're all here for each other at the Cadre. Feel free to reach out if you need to.

What happened to the coffee bean roaster?
I’ve upgraded the roaster, it now has a glass extension that allows for much more coffee per roast and delivers great consistency between batches.
I’m aging some beans in cigar boxes for my next adventure

Before I get to the shave's I want to thank all who have posted messages of encouragement (or sent private messages of support). I am very happy to report that a major source of stress has been lifted and there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel. life is what it is and there will certainly be more put on my plate in the future but for now I am able to breathe a bit better.

About the Shave's....
I've been sticking to the Stirling Valeren and Weck Sextoblade and getting great shaves. I binned the Fromm blade that rusted so bad on the cruise and switched to the Diane blade I had been using in the Weck safety razor, excellent choice. I have not kept strict count but this blade has seen at least 2-3 weeks of use and is still providing great shaves. The Stirling soap is showing no signs of giving up, that one once sample is like the ever lasting gobstopper of shaving. There is no reason someone shouldn't buy a sample of every flavor of stirling soap. The performance is excellent and the variety unbelievable.
