Bourbon Country Shave Journal - Dave in KY

Thanks for the info. I'm watching the site and leaning towards a 26mm. From what I see you don't pic a knot type other the size, they are all the same I guess. Watching and accumulating shave things to sell to fund one.

I can also add kudos to how good the Paladin brushes are, even though I only have one (26mm), and it's perfect! But the knots aren't "all the same". There are different badger batches, and on his website he explains the characteristics of each batch he's used. Also, pay attention to the knot specs in terms of loft. Ken uses the term "free loft", which I find to be quite useful in decision making for me. Some will have what people call a "glue bump", and some don't. I prefer the ones that do not; so you might see loft 52, free loft 52, which indicates no bump.

Ok, lets keep the brush talk to a minimum. You keep talking about it, I'll have to order one and I'm already in enough trouble as it is.

Good stuff. Thanks !! Looks like I need to do a little more reading on the site.

Have to agree with both KJ and Chris H. on the Paladins, and Ken. He puts a lot of love and hard work into each handle and brush to ensure that he's putting out the best quality product he can. If you're more interested in the different knots that his brushes come in and his thoughts on them, he's got a ton of information on the Paladin website!

I'm reading up but here is a quote from the site I see with all the brushes, "At present, we only offer knots containing what is commonly referred to as 2-band badger hair, the characteristics of which combine resilient (springy) shafts with soft tips."

Looks like just 1 choice on knots for now. How's the 2 band?

Razor: Rockwell 6s plate R5
Blade: Pol Silver SI (9)
Brush: Burma Shave Boar
Soap: Chiseled Face Easy Street
AS Splash 1: Thayers Lavender
AS Splash 2: Aqua Velva

Up at 3 for an early work day so shaved last night before retiring. No pic. Decided to use my Unmarked Burma Shave Boar bought when I was a teen and dabbled with williams back @1980. My older brother Tim was a tight wad and was always borrowing thing like my canned goo. (Example when we'd go out with friends and hit McDonalds for dinner, everyone orderes a combo. Tim orders a burger and bums a fry from someone here and there as well as a sip of there coke occasionally) Always drove me nuts so I bought a Mug with my name on it, some williams soap and this boar brush to keep in our bathroom and used for some time. At some point I for some crazy reason stopped using it, must have been in the electric razor period. Somehow it has stayed with me thru moves and marriage ( July 5th, yesterday was 32 years for us) Still lathers great and the Easy Street is a great scent and performer for me. Wish I had gotten the splash before he ran out. I was thinking of Ron and his loss while I used it last night and pray he is finding some comfort at this terrible time. Enjoying reading the posts while having coffee this morning. Everyone have a great day and hug your loved ones !!

PS: Snapped a quick shot of the old brush that keeps working and another 2 shots of 1 on it's way to me soon. Thanks, Eric !!

PSS - My brother grew out of that period and is a very talented auto technician and generous person. I'll need to share some pics of cars he has built from the ground up some time.

Nice Dave! Always nice when you can get the most out of some vintage gear...it's quite rewarding. The new brush looks amazing!

Those TSC member brushes sure are BEAUTIFUL! Thanks for supporting our Hobbyists and TSC by purchasing a brush.

What happened?

Whoo nice stuff. Is that a pic of your den? Been meaning to mention in another tread, it would be cool to see more shave den tours as well.

That's a good idea if I ever get it organized. I use the spare bathroom since I get up and gone before TLOTH is up. I kinda sprawl out there and have some blades in a Gillette case in spare bedroom.

Great shave and read Dave!

Happy Anniversary!

Great looking Brush! What knot is that?

You have amassed quite the collection. I love the story you shared with us. This is what makes our humble group great! Our willingness to share small tidbits of our lives. I am sure you will love what Eric is making you...it looks gorgeous!

And CONRATULATIONS on what seems a lifetime of nuptials! It is quite an accomplishment to be married that long! I hope you two had a great one!

It's the Cashmere Knot (Synthetic). Didn't have one yet and thought I'd give it a try.

Thanks Don. I do think we have something special here in this forum and hope it takes off but maintains it's characteristics. That's a challenge but I think if anyone can pull it off it'll be the 3 amigos.

Razor: Rockwell 6s plate R5
Blade: Pol Silver SI (10)
Brush: Razorock 400 Noir Synthetic
Soap: Catie's Bubbles Irish Coffee
AS Splash 1: Thayers Cucumber
AS Splash 2: Skin Bracer

Haven't used Catie's Bubbles in quite awhile. I like their soap but feel I have better performers around. 1 thing is for sure, it is my favorite coffee themed scent and will always have it around. Forgot how much I love it til smelled it again this morning. I got the 2 oz and definitely need a bigger tub to have it on hand. The Razorock Noir Synthetic in the 400 brush is attractive but not a favorite. Never really happy with the lathering process when I use it. Can't quite figure out why........maybe it's just me. Nice smooth uneventful (that's the goal, right?) shave. Never been one of those trying to get as many shaves as I can from a blade as they are so cheap but may see how this one does in the Rockwell for longevity. Never went past 12 with a Pol Silver SI so we'll see. The blades don't get rough for me but at some point I question whether they aren't as efficient because they are duller and just pitch for a new sharper one when I'm sure they can go further. But why when again they are cheap, I have plenty and sharp is king. Have a great day Gents !!
