Bourbon Country Shave Journal - Dave in KY

Tuesdays Shave
Razor: Timeless .68 OC Scalloped
Blade: Pol Silver SI (12)
Brush: Yaqi 24mm Synthetic
Soap: Razorock WTP Lime
AS Splash 1: Humphrey's Alcoholado Maravilla
AS Splash 2: Aqua Velva

So I got the triple set of these WTP soaps for $9 because................................well it was 3 soaps for $9 that get good reviews. I was, as Chad said I would be, very surprised and happy with the scent, lather and performance. What a bargain these are. The Timeless continues to astound me in Looks and Performance. I see it like my Weber Grill. What are you talking about Dave? Well, I love to grill and burned up a bunch of inferior grills over the years. Whenever I would need a new gas grill I'd look at Weber and for the price I'd say, I'll just get a CharBroil or whatever brand again. 2 years ago I decided to get the Weber at the end of the season when on sale and now wished I had bought it years ago. Quality is so much better and should last me with proper care for the foreseeable future. Sometimes it pays to pay a little more for the quality "if you are in a position to". I feel the same about the Timeless razor.

So this brings me to a dilemma. I get good service from my synthetic brushes. I am enamored lately with Paladin Brushes (Thanks a lot Josh and KJ) but that is a lot of scratch to me and could buy quite a few NICE synthetics. Should I stick with the Synthetics alone that do the job great or is the Paladin my waiting Weber grill and Timeless Razor ? I started a thread over in the Brush section with a poll on 2 Paladins I'm considering. Please go and vote, but also tell me why either would be a good choice and WHY? In other words feel free to enable and push me over the edge. Unfortunately they don't come up used often or have an end of season sale. Anyone got a coupon code for one...........................??

Have a GREAT day Cadre !!

Dave, my thoughts on that Paladin are if you really want one and it won't cause any undue stress on the family or income...then get it. But get it because you want it. Those synthetics you are talking about...are really good brushes and are perfectly able to get the job done. In the end...it's just shaving. This hobby of ours can be just as compulsive as gambling...make sure that it's something you want, something you can afford, and something the wife can live with. If the answer is yes to all three of these questions...then I say go for it!

Good reading, Dave. You've got a lot of nice gear. Enjoy your shaves!

I hear ya Don and agree. Scarey part is how technical it all gets and goes over my head. Don't mind getting but at the entry price, I obviously want to pick correctly and this lift thing just escapes me even after reading up on their site. If no free loft is desirable and they are as good at this as indicated, why do they do this loft differences? Will need to study this more. Thanks

Sounds like you enjoyed the What the Puck Soap. They might be the best deal in shavedom right now honestly.

I think the free loft is there so people who like a more or less floppy brush. I could be wrong...but I believe a brush with less free loft will be a bit firmer. This is purely preference. I'm primarily a face latherer and prefer a brush with less floppiness...but not too stiff. Just my preference.

Yeah, I'm a little slow but that's the way I'm understanding it now too. Thanks

I agree, it's all much too confusing. You should just make things easier and get a brush from Saponificio Varesino ?

Nice shave. I have the WTP blue with matching splash. I can't wait to give it a try.

Sage wisdom Don.

Dave I hope the hunt brings you what you’re really looking for!

Honestly, I'm not a brush guy. I use them, I like them, but I don't get into the details about loft, shape, etc. I have 4 different Paladins, and are probably all very different in spec. But I like them all. I buy based on the handle shape/color alone. I've never been dissatisfied. If you don't know the difference now, then analyzing the brushes not will make little difference. I doubt you'd notice or appreciate any difference in them.

The more I thought about it KJ, this is the exact conclusion I came to and have already ordered 1. Thanks for the common sense answer.

Also thanks to all for positive comments and reading my drivel.

Wednesday Shave
Razor: Rockwell 6s R5
Blade: Pol Silver SI (13)
Brush: Stirling 2 Band Synthetic
Soap: DG After the Rain
AS Splash 1: Thayers Cucumber
AS Splash 2: CFG Sherlock

Getting in habit of posting my shaves the day after but at least it's up. After a rough day in the heat and humidity (I'm a Commercial Window Cleaner for going on 30 years) and feeling my age, it was a relief to get home to a nice shower and shave. Went with the Rockwell as I didn't have much growth in the less then 24 hours since my Timeless shave. Man that thing is efficient. Pushing the Pol Silver SI not intentionally but just seems it has more life in it. I'll change it when it feels like it needs to be changed. Have 1 in the Rockwell and 1 in the Timeless that are about the same 12-13 shaves on them. This Stirling 2 Band is one of my favorite Synthetics for looks and function. Went with After the Rain after seeing Nurse Dave using it in his video and it never disappoints. Nice fresh scent and feel after a muggy day. Today I'm gonna do a throw back shave and will post when I can. Taking day off to recuperate and get yard work done.

Have a great day Cadre

Nice Solid Shave Dave! Don't work too hard! And drink lots of water and other fluids in this heat!

Heh, you mentioning you're a window cleaner threw me back in time. For one summer in college I was the supervisor of the campus window washing crew. A few interesting stories there.

Good shave Dave! Looking forward to the throwback.

Take care of yourself out in that heat!
