Bourbon Country Shave Journal - Dave in KY

Razor: Delta Echo "Cubano" Slim (4 and 5 Setting)
Blade: Pol Silver SI (2)
Brush: Eric Sorrentino Cadre Custom
Soap: Declaration Grooming Trismegistus
Aftershave 1: Humphrey's Alcoholado Maravilla
Aftershave 2: Anthony's Bay Rum

So I revisited the Delta Echo Slim to see if it was Soap, blade or razor that irritated me last use. I had Jay recheck this razor once as it shaves differently then my other Slim. They are both 1964's 1 from 1st qtr and 1 from 3rd qtr. I know there was a change in geometry and aggression at some point from reading before, but forget what year it was etc. I looked closely at the 2 heads side by side and do notice a difference in the shape and details of the tray that goes up and down. Assuming the variation I decided to dial the razor down from 5 to 4 to see if that helps. Used a Pol Silver for 2nd use that was fine in the Rockwell thus eliminating the blade as a culprit. Got a very nice shave. Actually decided to move razor to setting 5 again for final pass and practiced some Gillette Glide and buffing on the neck area instead of just accepting the normal results. Was even going well enough to try the "Spidy" over the lips several times. No issues so maybe the razor wasn't the issue. So I will further investigate the soap. If irritation comes back it's the soap. If not it was the blade.

Have a GREAT day Cadre !!

Great setup again today! Maybe it was a heavy handedness that caused the irritation last shave...but this one seems to have done the trick! About the Bay Rum...I think you said your barber made it, but he no longer makes it anymore? Is that correct? 130 year old formula! Did anyone get the recipe?

Thanks for the comments Don. The Bay Rum was a gift from my brother. His barber in Levttown, PA makes it occasionally tweaking an old family recipe. When he had some stock my brother bought 2 and sent me one.

Very glad you eliminated the razor as the source of your irritation. That bay rum sounds interesting. Is it similar to any other bay rums?

Woah I was darn near 2 weeks behind!

Bad Craig!!

Great shaves, reads, and pictures Dave!

I really can't say that I prefer my Slim over my Fatboys (one is a Delta Echo custom, the other vintage). Also I can't say that I've noticed any real difference in the Vintage Fatboy and the Delta Echo one. I get great shaves with all 3 of them.

Heavy on the clove but not bad. I rather like it but have only used Clubman previously so couldn't pic a comparable for reference.

Razor: Delta Echo "Cubano" Slim (5 and 7 Setting)
Blade: Pol Silver SI (3)
Brush: Eric Sorrentino Cadre Custom
Soap: Sudsy Soapery Uplift / Wholly Kaw Jamestown Gentlemen
Aftershave 1: Humphrey's Alcoholado Maravilla / Thayers Cucumber
Aftershave 2: Pinaud Clubman

As you can see in the list above I started with the Uplift Sample Soap Don sent me and got a fantastic lather going but after applying to my face as I was working it in, I again noticed a tingling sensation that was growing. I know some of my other soaps in the den have mildly caused this in the past and I just continue with the shave. I think it was Chris Lindsey that I read had some that react with him (He knows what his irritants are) and so it has spurred me to start giving more thought to this instead of pushing thru a shave because I like the scent or performance. So I've been trying to weed out what might be offenders and narrow down what seems to bother me to help with future purchases. So something in this and the Somali Rose definitely don't agree with me and will go in that category to help with finding common denominators. So needless to say, I switched to a sample of Jamestown Gentlemen to empty a container to have for sending out a sample to someone (GTB - It's coming Shawn) I really like the JG and when I make a purchase from Wholly Kaw, this would probably be the one out of ones I've sampled. Got it a little wetter then should have in the rush but had a very enjoyable shave. Was using the Slim on 5 for the 1st 2 passes and decided to do a cleanup going to 7. A lot of people go down in adjustment as they progress but have read of others that do the opposite. This method worked great resulting in a SSS (making up new acronyms = Silky Smooth Shave) Picture was pre-shave and therefore shows what was started with. Details above indicate changes made mid shave.

Just a moment to comment about this brush again. The more I use this brush the more I'm in love with it. Not just what it represents (This wonderful group of guys starting a new journey with this forum) but also the Craftsmanship that it has and attention to detail. It's my 1st Cashmere Synthetic and won't be my last. I find myself just looking at it on the shelf sometimes admiring the beautiful grains in the wood and what a stunning job Eric did on it.

Hope all in the Cadre have an awesome day !!

Nice pic and shave. Good call on changing the soap.

Bad reactions really suck and are quite disappointing (AoS Ocean Kelp I am looking at you), but there is so much good stuff out there that you shouldn't let it bother you too much. I hope it is the scent components and not the soap base that is causing you problems.

So, common ingredients between those two are Stearic Acid, Beef Tallow, Coconut Oil, Castor Oil, Glycerin, Lanolin, and Sodium Lactate.

Of those, the most likely irritant is Lanolin, as that is a common ingredient that folks have issues with. You might see if anything else you use has lanolin in it. If so try it again, and see if you get anything. If you don't have anything else with Lanolin in it, I'd steer clear of that in the future.

The Fragrance oil or Essential oils used are probably the most reasonable culprit after that.

Thanks KJ, That's what I figured. I'm pretty certain I have others with lanolin that didn't bother me to this extent. I guess the amount in it can be a factor on why 1 may bother me more then another too. For example the Amber and Tobacoo from LNHC has lanolin too and don't remember it being an issue even though they are in the same spot on the ingredient list. So may be a fragrance oil or essential oil. It's not like I was bound for the ER so no biggie, but I'm gonna keep tabs on it.

Razor: Delta Echo "Cubano" Slim (7 Setting)
Blade: Pol Silver SI (4)
Brush: Razorock BC Plissoft Synthetic
Soap: Ariana & Evans Revolution
Aftershave 1: Thayers Lavender
Aftershave 2: Ariana & Evans Revolution

Decided to try a full shave on setting 7.......probably not the best idea. No difficulty but took a little for the burn to subside. The Revolution soap and Splash scent is right up my alley. More use before commenting more on the Splash. Soap was out of this world. Quick shave and smooth and recovering.

Hope the Cadre had a great day.

Man you need to not post pics of that razor til my Fatboy and MMOC get back from the spa. That thing is getting me stoked up
