Bourbon Country Shave Journal - Dave in KY

Great shave Dave!

Im not sure what your post shave procedure is for your brushes, but after a good rinsing in warm water, I gently squeeze them out, shake briskly to help dislodge any water further down in the base of the knot, then “towel strop”, gently stroking the bristles (handle leading) in Daniel-San motions on a towel to reshape and dry further. My brushes are always dry the next day.

That's been my exact procedure for years now. After doing it, I look and see if any bristles are clumped in the least. If so, it's back for another rinse and through the same procedure again. I know boars I guess I've read shouldn't be used back to back so they can "completely" dry and wondered what the thoughts were on badger.

This being said I know years ago people had 1 brush and used it daily without issue. Just being extra cautious since it's really my first quality badger I've ever owned. Good to know it can be used daily. Thanks for the comments

My procedure is the same for boars. I use them daily as well. No issue with them drying out.

Was for mine from 1980 that I still have and use, but then you see people stating how it needs to dry thoroughly to prevent damage. On my 1980 Burma shave boar I wasn't too concerned. For my new Paladin I'm a little more cautious but now I see it's a non-issue. Thanks

This is true. But unless people are leaving their brushes sopping wet, I don’t understand how their brush would not dry properly overnight.

2nd Shave for today

Razor: Rockwell 6s R5 / Karve Plate "C"
Blade: Pol Silver SI (15) / Israeli Red (4)
Brush: Razorock Big Bruce
Soap: Wholly Kaw Project Leather
Aftershave 1: N/A
Aftershave 2: CFG Ghost Town Barber

Saw a Wholly Kaw Project Leather on the bay with aftershave and wanted to use my sample and decide if I would get it at the good price it was. Had a little stubble from this mornings shave already and won't shave until tomorrow evening again so thought give the sample a shot to decide before buying it.

First I got a great lather but the scent while not bad just isn't doing it for me so at least I answered that question. Problem is I'm on pass 2 and still not clearing stubble like normal and starting to feel a little raw skinned. Decided the issue was shave 15 on the blade so called an audible (Like that Chad?) and pulled out the Karve with 3 shaves on the Israeli Red. MUCH better and got things where they should be. I've firmly decided I'm not taking blades past 10 anymore. It just isn't worth it as cheap as they are. I can get more shaves from one but efficiency is drastically affected and the shaves aren't as close and therefore not lasting like I want. feeling a little raw from pushing the blade I went right to GTB for the rescue as I love the post shave feel I get from their AS's. All is right again in the world.

I say that's pretty good. For DE I dump the blades after 3 shaves.
Whoa really? Some blades don’t even start getting really good until shave 3-4. I use blades for at least 2-4 weeks, if not longer.

Alright coach good audible. But next time please pay attention to the play clock. Remember defense has to be given an opportunity to get set. That's a 5 yard penalty delay of game. Oh wait wrong sport!

Great shave Dave! Also like the pics enough that you were featured on Instagram and Facebook!

Thanks Chad, That's an honor for sure

I love SPORTSBALL!

Razor: Rockwell 6s R5
Blade: Bolzano Superinox (1)
Brush: Paladin Harlequin
Soap: LNHC Somali Rose
Aftershave 1: N/A
Aftershave 2: Proraso

Quick shave yesterday evening. Love this soap but seems I'm getting some skin reaction while shaving. Gonna give it another try or 2 and compare with the Amber &Tobacco to see if it's the soap or scent ingredients that are getting to me. Nice smooth shave and hope it was a fluke as I like this soap a lot. 1st time with a Bolzano blade and quite pleased with it. I have a bunch of blades and all do well for me that I have but seem to prefer/grab the Pol Silver more then anything else.

Have a great day Cadre !!

If I had to guess Dave...it might be the Rose in the soap. I have to stay away from almost anything with rose in it. It will light my face on fire. And I like to pride myself in having very versatile skin. I could pretty much shave with battery acid and not have a reaction. But, use a soap with Rose in it? And that sucks...because there are so many great rose scented soaps out there!

I'll keep a watch on that possibility and I'm looking forward to your next video "Shaving with Battery Acid"

There are a lot of people who have a reaction to rose scented products, so you are not alone if that's the case here. Lisa really makes a fantastic soap, and I can't wait to try the new formula that she has coming out.

Bummer about the irritation going on. That really stinks when it’s an enjoyable soap!

Glad you pulled a decent shave though!

Thanks for reading and commenting Gents. Yeah, I was thinking it may be the rose and I'll keep note and see. I've had other times with other soaps that I've had some tingling going on but not to this level. Hadn't given it a lot of thought until seeing some comment in their journals about the tingling and how certain things react with their skin. So we learn from reading each others as it has made me be more conscious of this. I'll keep watch to see if it is the Rose, something else or even whether FO verses EO.

Razor 1: Feather SS w/Feather Professional Blade
Razor 2: CB Karve Plate "C"
Blade: Israeli Red Personna (5)
Brush: Stirling 2 Band Synthetic
Soap: LNHC Amber & Tobacco
Aftershave 1: Humphrey’s Alcoholado Maravilla
Aftershave 2: Aqua Velva

The Amber and Tobacco didn't seem to have the same effect as the Somali Rose did. little tingling near end of shave but nothing like the other days issue. Will keep a watch on and hope I can keep using this scent as it's a winner for me.

So inspired by Chris @GearNoir I decided to try the Feather SS again for a first pass. Probably not the best idea as I was in a hurry but who am I to be reasonable. Halfway thru the 1st pass all is going well.......................and I guess you can see where this is going?? Got a little drag/skip spot on my chin which gave a little dig. Oh well, undeterred I continued with the rest of the first pass and feel for me it was a win. By the end of the shave (I did 2 more passes with the Karve razor) and application of witch hazel the blood had stopped. Good considering I'm on aspirin to thin my blood for the time being. I'll post a pick on Murphy's page to show the learning lesson. All and all I feel like a great smooth shave resulted and feels nice after topping off with some Aqua Velva. Had an early job and was back home for a quick shave before meeting the wife with friends for lunch/ Have a great day Cadre !!
