Bourbon Country Shave Journal - Dave in KY

Nice early shave, Dave! I would reserve any kind of judgement, good or bad, on the Paladin until you have at least a couple weeks of shaves. I don't own a Paladin...yet...but, In my experience, if it is a natural bristle brush, you need at least two weeks for a break in period, if not more.

My only question is...why would you want to put that stinky soap on that beautiful brush!

Gotcha on the break in and I read 1st use should be with a scent you like and this was a no brainer

Any GTB shave is an awesome shave sir!

Absolutely

Great couple of reads, shaves, and pictures Dave!

The TSC and the Paladin brushes both look great!

it’s just different from the synthetics

Most definitely! And a Paladin knot will be different from a Simpson, which will be different from a Envy, etc. not to even mention badger vs boar vs horse vs mixed. Nor Best vs Pure vs Silvertip vs Mountain etc.

....GTB never disappoints me. Not an elite soap performance wise but very good in my book and for me the scent over rides any deficiencies in that area....

This describes it perfectly for me as well. I totally dig the scent of GTB. I've got the bath/bar soap, the shaving soap, the a/s, and the EdP. Love it!

And yes, give the Paladin at least a few weeks to loosen up that knot.

Thanks, I have everything accept the EdP as I'm not much into cologne or heavy scents beyond an aftershave. Thanks for the comment.

Razor: Rockwell 6s R5
Blade: Pol Silver SI (14)
Brush: Eric Sorrentino Custom
Soap: Stirling Orange Chill
Aftershave 1: Humphrey’s Alcoholado Maravilla
Aftershave 2: Pinaud Clubman Citrus Musk

Dubbing this the “Poor Mans Tangerine Creeper” Shave

After seeing Don’s shave video it leaves you craving orange and menthol. This is the closest I can get to that and it, while not being in the same league as Holy Black, gave a great shave. I LOVE orange scents and the menthol was just the ticket. Earlier on in my journey this was a favorite soap. While I have come to have and appreciate better soaps, this still can stand on it’s own as a MORE then adequate soap for performance and protection. Honestly we are at a time when we all are very fortunate to have the choices we have in this hobby or addiction (whatever you want to call it) I think back to 2009 and compare to now and it’s insane how much it’s grown. 14 shaves on the Pol Silver and feels like it has more in it. Why do I, after about 12 shaves, start second guessing and thinking I should change it because maybe it’s fallen off gradually and I’m missing a sharper and better shave? It may be true or not but I’m gonna force myself to leave this one in the Rockwell for as long as I can but may change the 12/13 shave one in the Timeless. All in all a great shave.

Raining today some so calling an audible and taking the day to do some more work on the front deck. I put a roof on it last summer and need to do some work to prep the eaves to be closed in before I screen it in.

Have a great day Cadre !!!

Good stuff, and THB isn't that much better a soap than Stirling...so you're not far off from the lather that Don experienced! Nice set up Dave and shave! BTW, I have to echo the others about the Paladin brush...give it about 7-10 shaves, and lather it up in between periodically. It will speed up the break in period.

Thanks. I have THB Caswell Massey in Ceramic so know the quality. They do know how to present their product. Didn't know how long I need to give the Badger to dry between uses too?

I use the same brush every day. No need to skip. Just be sure it has dried out completely from the day before and you’re good to go.

Oh boy I was 3 shaves behind. And I just had to stare at the pics of those two beautiful brushes you used! Great stuff!

Great shave Dave!

Im not sure what your post shave procedure is for your brushes, but after a good rinsing in warm water, I gently squeeze them out, shake briskly to help dislodge any water further down in the base of the knot, then “towel strop”, gently stroking the bristles (handle leading) in Daniel-San motions on a towel to reshape and dry further. My brushes are always dry the next day.
