beginish’s Eye on a Splintered Mind

CBL made his tonsorial with the same ingredients as vintage Williams tonsorial, to the best of my knowledge. I’m pretty sure that’s what he said in his announcement.
Do you know if the commercial stuff was the same as the retail?
(Bib I hope I'm not derailing your thread)

I'm continuing to plug along with Ogallala Bay Rum. I've put a real hurt on this cake of soap, and have easily used more than half of it. The scent continues to be very enjoyable. One of the things I'm really liking is when I do a rinse of the soap with warm water after lathering (I know I don't have to, but I'm weird this way), the Bay Rum scent just fills the bathroom, and I get to appreciate it in a way I don't when it's stuck to my face. It's kind of like aromatherapy. I've played around some more with the water content in the lather, adding more than I had been doing since the level of slickness just wasn't cutting it. I'm finding that the extra water does improve the quality of the lather, and the shaves have become no nick affairs, though I do still get the occasional weeper, especially on my neck. The hairs there grow in this completely haphazard fashion and I'll go over the same spot multiple times to minimize the microstubble.

I'm not yet in a position where I'm planning what soap to use next, but It won't be long.

Holy cow, what a fantastic lather this morning. Ogallala was just outstanding today....rich, slick and shiny(!!!). Cushion was great. Anyone who tries to tell you that the brush doesn't matter will soon be trying to sell you a bridge in Brooklyn.

When they first introduced them, Simpson suggested that they were different from the then current crop of (excellent) synths. I don’t think they’re getting them from Mühle or Plisson, but they’re not all that different.

I broke through the bottom of Ogallala Bay Rum today. Simpson Chubby 2 synthetic proves its mettle once again. Since I will probably finish this puck by the end of the year, I am giving some thought to what comes next. I have something on the order of 8-10 years worth of shaves left in the pucks sitting in the box in my closet, assuming that I only load as much as I need and am not loading it like I hate it. Not counting the 7 shave sticks, this is the current stock:

Trumpers Violet
Trumpers Rose (2)
DR Harris Windsor
DR Harris Arlington
in LE Bowl
Vintage Wrisley (2)
C&E Sweet Almond Oil
AOS Lavender, tallow (3)
AOS Unscented, tallow
Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet (Tallow 1st)
Penhaligon's Sartorial
Taconic Bay Rum
L'Occitane Cade
BebeLush Bay Rum
Pre de Provence 63
Musgo Real
Hershey Cocoa Butter
SCS Refined

If I focus on the soaps listed in bold, which will give me good solid shaves, but do nothing for an experience (which for me, will be a combination of fantastic performance and great scent), I can load them like I hate them. The Trumpers, Harris, Wrisley and AOS will give me 90 days each (2 years total). Taconic, BebeLush and Hershey something like 60 shaves, and SCS 30 (1 year total). So 3 years to dispense with the good, solid soaps. Of those remaining, only PDP and Cade remain in production, with the others ranging from Unobtainium (C&E, AOS Lavender, Blenheim Bouquet) to hard to find (Sartorial & Musgo).

I think I will do the following:

1. Use the SCS Refined. It's no longer made, but I love the scent and frankly, I worry about the shelf life of a soft artisan soap like that. Better to use it now than have it go off and not be able to use it at all.
2. Use the PDP and load it like I hate it. No problems laying hands on it, so if they do decide to discontinue it and I really feel like I have to have it, I can get more.
3. Use some of the good solid soaps.
4. Use the Cade the same way and with the same rationale as the PDP.
5. Use more of the good solid soaps and mix in the Sartorial and Musgo to break it up.
6. When only the Unobtainium is left, settle into those and savor them, purchasing new soaps here and there to fill in.

I know what you're thinking: 'He's insane.'

Well, yes, but we both already knew that. Let's take a second to appreciate the method to my madness.

Solid plan! There’s some good shaves in that list! Maybe use one or two of the less desirable for shower soap...

"Use up my yucky stuff" was my plan until @CBLindsay sent me some beta tonsorial to eval. Now my soap world is all out of kilter and it seems that I now have a briefcase of "yucky stuff." Well, okay, it's not yucky but it's not CBL either 🙈

I would say the big wrench in your plan might be the PDP, that stuff indestructible and might last 3 years on its own. I would have thought the DR Harris would last forever too but I found that to go faster than I first thought once I got into and really loaded it. I also found it to partner well with the vintage soaps that have no scent and sometimes lack a little (Wrisley?). Most of your soaps are fairly long lasting soaps, good luck with that.
