Bourbon Country Shave Journal - Dave in KY

Glad you liked the Wickham, Dave. Their scents do tend to the lighter side of the house. As far as the how they perform, when loading from the tub, I've found that the performance rivals all but the best Tallow based soaps...pretty impressive for a vegan based soap.

I know that the Ninfeo di Egeria I have is pretty strongly scented. It's modeled after an AdP scent (Blu Mediterraneo Fico Di Amalfi), so it's a mix of the classic colonia type with some fig (non-sweet) and aquatics.

I wanna learn about plumbing!! I just recently watched a few videos about flushing the water heater. I don't really think I should be messing with the water heater, but seeing the stuff they got out of it makes me think it could be worth while.

Turn off the water going into the water heater first, then turn it on and off a couple of times to stir things up. If you can turn on an outside spigot you can drain a hot water heater. I usually just drain mine until the water clears up mostly. I do it in the fall. If you have hard water, yeah there can be a lot of crud in there. You'll notice a difference in how your hot water heater heats up the water.

I guess I work about touching it because I don't know what it'll do running it empty for a while.

2019 Shave # 19

Razor: Mergress
Blade: Gillette Silver Blue (1)

Brush: Shavemac Ebonite 2 Band

Soap: SV 70th Anniversary

Aftershave 1: Humphrey's Alcoholado Maravilla
Aftershave 2: SV 70th Anniversary

So I received a Shavemac brush bought from Josh and a Borrowed Razor (Mergress) from Jim. Using these 2 beauties I felt I needed to put a hold on my samples I'm going thru to do them justice with a full tub load of something to do them justice. Reached for SV 70th. Was going to doa 20 second load but stopped at around 17 or so as I had LOADS of proto lather. Decided to do a hot towel as Josh does since I had too much lather. Not only is this brush stunning to me but it performs phenomenal as well. SOO happy that I got it and thanks again Josh for letting me give it a good home. Decided to get a new GSB blade in the Mergress that I saw on a BST and was mulling while Jim pulled the trigger because we both know it was a steal of a deal. This thing is beautiful and hefty. I dialed it to 2.5 after loading the blade and ensuring the cap was put on correctly with the line and arrow. It was a nice shave but I got 1 small cut/nick doing the fools pass under my nose. Sealed fine with Alum after the shave. I enjoyed the shave although it reminded me why I sold the Parker Variant I had. These 2 razors are similar (although the Mergress is nicer IMO) don't hold the blade rigid the length of the blade and give chatter. Not a favorite of mine as I prefer a rigidly held blade. I also looked at the blade gap and noticed very slight but the blade was slightly crooked. I tried to pick it up in the 2 pics of both sides. If you look you can see distance from blade to guard is narrower on one side than the other. I loosened and tried to align and re-tighten and think it is straighter. I wouldn't think you should have to do that on one of these razors but it is what it is and we will see if it makes a difference. All in all a nice shave although I feel a little more exfoliated than normal. May dial at 2 tomorrow and see if it's more comfortable while maintaining efficiency. Thanks Sharp's (Jim) for giving me a chance to take this baby for a few test rides. Have a Stellar day Cadre !!

Wow that ebonite Brush is amazing looking. Nice snag. You might now have the best brush stable on the Cadre with that sucker.

Your first experience with the Mergress is a perfect example of why there are almost no two reactions to equipment that are the same.
I have only cut myself once with the Mergress due to user error. I use setting 3 for when I need an extremely mild shave but mostly use it on settings 3.5-4. And find it to be a razor that like your Timeless (set it and go).

I wonder if it is blade choice that made the alignment off. I have had issues with Kai’s where they don’t fit every razor. Well hope you finally get to enjoy it the way I do. If anything you will have learned that you didn’t miss a thing.

Do do you think people would be interested in a Pass Around with it? Maybe KJ at least.

\nIt\'s not been a bad experience, so hope that isn\'t how it came across. 1st shave is just observations and getting acquainted. I do like a rigid held blade but like this much more than the Variant. I\'m sure KJ would LOVE to try it when he gets back to his home front since he\'s considering one. Wish I nabbed this when it was in the BST for what it was, it was a no brainer. I was just slowing down to think about it and show some restraint (the stuff everyone says I don\'t have) I am glad you got it and do appreciate the chance to get a feel for it. I wager to say there would be interest in a pass around but you never know till you start a thread and see who signs up. The nick may have come from misalignment at the time. we\'ll see tomorrow how she goes straighter now. You are right about people all having different takes on things. I didn\'t care for the Variant but it gets a lot of love here. I\'m an oddball.

Good thoughts on the Mergress. A little scary on the alignment! Hope the shave tomorrow is a bit smoother.

Nice! Stainless steel lines?
No, copper to the plastic quick connect everything is going to now. Hate the way they add plastic to everything..................They give you a brass piece to thread into your flex line and that quick connects to the faucet plastic piece crimp(?) attached to their copper supply line. They're all going to this. JUNK as far as I'm concerned but all that was available at Lowes that I saw.....................

I've been switching everything over to the plastic PEX tubing as I've done remodel/repair work on my house. I love the stuff. Unfortunately, I don't love the plastic fittings and cheap parts they put in the faucets and fixtures these days. They build them cheaper, yet charge you more. I just put "good" Delta fixtures in my shower 3 years ago and they need replaced already....

I have the sme thoughts they build cheaper and charge more. I will say that I have always been a copper guy. No cpvc for me. I got certification for Wirsbo uponor pex which is different from the various pex that have a crimp fitting. The pipe has a memory and you have a tool to expand the end of the pipe, put fitting in and let the pipe retract back to shape around the fitting and that's you connection. If I didn't see it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it. They then put the piece under pressure blowing the white pipe up til it was clear and a huge bubble but won't burst. Set aside and continued training. Later showed the expanded pipe and it looked the same again, white and normal size. Incredible stuff but fittings are pricey.

I've seen that stuff but never got to use it. Did a lot of copper for some kiln cooling lines at a plant here. Two of us ran somewhere around 20,000 feet ranging between 3/4 inch and 4 inch. All Pro-Press fittings though. Saved a butt load of time as opposed to sweating everything together.

So then the poor sap where ever that's installed need to fix something and is....hosed.

I never did a lot of commercial but when volunteering to help build our new world headquarters for our faith up in Warwick NY they had us running pro-press. Talk about expensive stuff but man we ran a ton of it.
