Etat Libre d’Orange - Herman a Mes Cotes Paraissait Une Ombre
I wasn’t really in the market for a rose fragrance. I don’t wear the note that often, and have some good rose oreinted samples on hand, but this one, well it had that Je ne sais quoi.

Sometimes a fragrance will give you an almost deja vu feeling, spark something from the past, that you can’t pinpoint, don’t even feel the need to, but just relish the sensation of that distant memory. This did that for me, and I decided almost instantly to spring for a bottle, made all the easier when I saw it at 40% off on our local grey market.

The name translates to “Herman at my side, seemed to me a shadow.“ a line from a Victor Hugo novel.
The main players I get are Geosmin, Rose, Patchouli, and an general Incense note.

Strictly speaking, I’d call it a rose patchouli, but what makes it so interesting is the wet rain like geosmin note that feels like it’s layered over the fragrance. Like the sun catching wet asphalt, it takes the very dark patchouli and injects sparkles of wet light. It’s a very nifty effect, and I think succeeds in creating that ‘shadow’ effect. There’s a perceivable dark / light interaction happening. Of course, like with most frags, you have to be looking for it, and I didn’t notice it nearly as strongly on my sample. There I got much more of the incense though. So, it will be interesting to see as I wear it more how much of a shape shifter this turns out to be.

In any case, this is a very wearable masculine rose, of course if you’re like Nurse Dave and hate patchouli, you’ll hate this. This is borderline head shop stuff, and, well I grew up in So Cal in the day, I love it. Probably the best patchouli in my collection even.

The package is pretty cool too, for a simple box, the there’s a texture, giving even more of that wet surface and contrasting light vibe to the overall experience.

I do think this is one that could subtlety knock your socks off, like it did for me, or just make you say ‘Huh, what’s the big deal?” So wouldn’t call it a safe blind buy by any means.

I just realized in taking my shave of the day pic - that I received the wrong Creed Viking - I have the cologne - but ordered the EdP - bummer. Hopefully will be able to work it out with FragranceNet.

I don’t know why I hadn’t bothered by sniffing it first - I wasn’t paying attention to the bottle.

I decided to keep the bottle and buy the juice I want from another vendor. I don’t feel confident that this vendor is going to rectify it correctly - I was on hold without getting ahold of anyone for 25 minutes and their chat says they are out even though this is during their business hours. This is surprising because it was a reputable gray market reseller and this is my first issue - but given this is the most I have ever spent on a frag - they probably have it listed wrong in their system - but since I can‘t get ahold of a real person - I can’t verify that. Oh Well, if this is my only real Problem - I am still blessed.

It’s funny, because right before I realized I had the wrong stuff - I had sniffed the cap and thought to myself “That smells a different than the M&M Gael Laoch - that smells more like Gael Laoch Orange…..I just thought my sniffer was off because I have sinusitis…….now looks like my sniffer is still on, even with a head cold - and that I should have paid attention when I opened the box. I did verify with my receipt that I did order the right stuff.

Brian that shop is a nightmare, had some problems when I used to order from them for my mom. It's great for low prices, but service is spotty at best. However you're inbox is no longer safe, and you'll be getting spam from them in perpetuity!

Wow, I got lucky, there was a higher bidder who dropped out. It was as high as I was willing to go on this so didn't plan to increase my bid.
I'll make it official when I actually get it, but in the meantime, I'm blaming Gus for making me think of this on Sunday morning.
The listing says it won't ship outside of Germany, but I did ask the seller before bidding and he said he would.
This may be the first actual eBay auction I've done, and didn't expect to see a YOU WON notice in my email this morning, in fact I thought it was a phishing email at first.

Yeah, you‘re right - when it comes to the cheapies - it was worth the risk of using them - but I should have thought about it for an expensive one - I always thought that I’d just pick up the phone and just get everything corrected. I feel bad for their customer service - probably are 3 college kids taking about a 1000 calls a minute.

Yeah, customer service is a rough way to make a living, and the agents are only able to do what the company enables them to do.
Just ask about my recent encounter with UPS customer service vs. Apple's.

I already owned D&G Light Blue Forever - but they are discontinuing it - so I grabbed another bottle. I know they just released Light Blue Italian Love - which is nearly identical, but they slightly turned down the grapefruit rindiness on that flanker….

The Lalique Pour Homme EdP is more on the side of a chypre/barbershop - but described as a woody aromatic. Little bit of smokiness.

Here are the notes:

The Lalique is almost a spot-on dupe of Creed's Bois du Portugal. Great juice!!! One of my favorites!
