TSC Hockey Thread

Disclaimer: sports by it's nature is competitive and as such this competition can become quite pointed sometimes and, especially with hockey involves "chirping."
Chirping:
In any sport, there's an element of trash-talking designed to unnerve the opponent and get him thinking about something other than the game at hand. Hockey insults are known as "chirps," and players use the best hockey chirps on ice rinks all across North America.

Please understand that if this is done it is done in a good natured way in the spirit of fun.

That being said:

The first time this was done in the regular season and during the playoffs was by Philadelphia goaltender Ron Hextall. Good times.

Yeah, goalie goals  are rare and impressive. There have only been 9 in NHL history unless you count scores on your own team ("own goals"). It's an impressive feat. Marty Brodeur has made three which is outstanding.Vasi has never made one, as is also the case with all but 7 goalies, but he has had several assists; another rare occurrence.
He is very much a "stay in your lane" goalie which is why he is so demarked in so many other stats. He is also deeply religious (Russian Orthodox) and prays for over an hour as part of his warm up before  every game.

Good game tonight. Panthers @Lightning. That's always a fun game. Minute and a half in and they're already in a scrum with punches flying. Sometimes there's as many hits as SOG. Plus 2 of the 3 best goalies in the league: Andrei Vasilevskiy (#1 of course) and Sergei Bobrovsky both Russians, the other of the 3 being Igor Shesterkin, yet another Russian. They kinda have this goalie thing going.

Funny that one of, if not  the biggest rivalry in hockey is between 2 Florida teams.

I am glad that hockey has prospered in Florida….I think it is really good for the game. There was a time I was worried - especially with the Panthers - it did seem that they were having issues like Phoenix, but now have bounced back.

That sounds like a great game!

People marvel that there is hockey here but if you think about how many transplants there are here it makes more sense than you'd think. Many people who grew up with it as part of their culture when it was dependent on weather are now living here and happy to see it available to watch. Now that it is not weather dependent there is a whole culture of it with youth leagues just like in the north.

When I knew it was firmly rooted here was when I saw a Panthers game and noticed how many Hispanic/Latino fans they had in the stands. Then they featured a peewee league player with a bio about him and his favorite player who was a little Latino boy. If it is out of the assumed traditions of the American south then how much more is it out of assumed traditions of Latin America? You have to admit they are a far cry from Bob & Doug McKenzie.

Why shouldn't hockey be for everybody? (Sorry Canadians) I'm thrilled to see it. The more people like it the more competition there is and the more there is to watch. Hey, if Jamaica can have a bobsled team then why can't Cuba or Mexico or Guatemala have a hockey team?

Sitting over here in the city they once said "Garbage idea putting a hockey team in the desert" about. If you build it...and its a great product....they will come.

VGK got a great win over Carolina last night. Several heart stopping moments when they couldn't get into the offensive zone more than half a step before the Canes would steal the puck and race back up ice....but our D-men put on a clinic. Plus Eichel snapped out of his funk and put 2 in net. The fun part of most evenings is having to sit there while my wife renames all the players. Last night she renamed our newest trade acquisition, Ivan Barbashev, as Barbasol.

Well, the hockey gods have smiled down upon the goalie deficient VGK once again. First it was when Pittsburgh made Marc Andre Fleury available for the expansion draft (that worked out for us for the first 3 seasons) and then again yesterday when the Kings traded their franchise goalie to the Blues in exchange for zamboni parts. Today, the VGK picked him up. Let's hope that getting an(other) aging goalie with a chip on his shoulder towards proving his former team was mistaken to let him go is the spark we need for a very long playoff run.

Ok, bummed that the Leafs lost - given that they are my second favorite team, but just watched Vancouver score two short handed goals on one penalty kill in tonight’s game. Impressive

Lightning lost they're feng shui or something. 5 straight losses?

What the heck guys? I can't do everything here.

Ok.......its VGK vs The Philadelphia team (I've heard of) that isn't the Phillies. Do I dare get a one time only bet going with my favorite Philadelphia fan??? What could I possibly put up in the wager and more importantly.....what is this thing? @Scuttlesoap
