There and Back Again, A Wet-Shaver's Tale

Does it look like this :)

Actually it looks more like this. But yes, I pulled the trigger on that one as well. It's just going to take longer to get here.

I like the larger blades, and looked up 7/8 straight razors on the auction site. This was one that popped up, so I threw up the opening bid, which was quite low. Amazingly, no one else bid on it and the guy sent it out fast. It is actually 13/16, but I'm not about to quibble over that. I honed it yesterday and it was on deck for today's shave, but that changed with today's Mail Call.

I'm sure there are people out there who can make their pictures do this razor justice. Sadly I'm not one of them, but I can say that it was more than worth the wait for this 8/8 Midi near wedge. I love that he offers blades of varying lengths, and the Midi really appealed to me.

Razor
: Max Sprecher 8/8 near wedge
Brush: Sorrentino turquoise
Soap: CBL Orion Hammam Spa
Aftershave: CBL After Shave Tonic
EDC: Penhaligon's Savoy Steam

Max really does create functional art. Just a beautiful razor and very easy to handle. Three passes and a bit of clean up for a fantastic DFS+, a nice dousing with the EDC and I was good to go.

So I've been thinking that it's time to start properly storing my straights, and there aren't a lot of good options out there that don't cost a mint when you're looking at storing dozens of the things. I'm sure it's been done before, but this is my inexpensive and easy way to cobble something together. One of the local cigar shops sells their used wooden cigar boxes for a couple bucks each, so I grabbed a few. Fat Bottom Betty is apparently a popular brand there. Some cheap hobby wood, a table saw, some wood glue, and I'm pretty happy with the results.

Thanks for reading, and Happy Easter!

Nice report on that razor! Man that is a looker! What kind of edge does Max put on it?

Are you selling those boxes yet? I absolutely need one. With that many slots, I would be set for life.

Thanks Tim! I’m not sure what he used as a finisher. The edge was not super sharp, but it was very good. I was going to email him and ask him about it lol.

I might consider making some of those boxes to sell if there is interest in them, but probably not until I refine them a bit and make sure they’re sturdy enough to last. I’m going to beat on this one a bit to see what it will take to break it.

Lookin good Eric!

Super nice storage solution!

That razor is gorgeous, Eric. Excellent storage creation. (y)

Beautiful razor and a great solution for your razors.
Thanks guys!

I went with 5/8, but that was mostly because that was the best spacing I could find to both hold any of my razors with minimal play and to make the spaces pretty even with a too-large or too-small gap in the last space. I could have used 1/2 and most or all my razors would have fit, and spacing will be decided by the same reasons for any others that I make. I only have 2 boxes that are exactly that size, the others are all different dimensions.

And who knows, I may try to get fancy and try to line them with felt or something in the future.

That’s what I was thinking too. I have some felt left over from a speaker box project.

You should “flock” them. Way easier with nice result. Flock Your Box
That is a great idea. I have a small kit coming to see how well it’ll go over before ordering a pound of the stuff.

I can’t wait to get this on the stones and shave with it.

I was told, for the third time now, that I’ll be back on days next week. I made sure they knew that I wasn’t getting my hopes up, but it would be great if that happened. It’s crazy how I know logically that there are the same amount of hours in the day, but I feel like I’m losing a few just by being on this shift somehow lol.

My shaves this week have consisted of the Rockwell 6c with a Wizamet and Ethos Grooming Colonia. I’ll hit up some variety once the 10-12 hour 6-7 day-a-week work schedule slows down a bit.

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Brush: Sorrentino Turquoise
Soap: Ethos Grooming Colonia
Aftershave: Ethos Grooming Colonia
EDT: Salvatore Ferragamo Acqua Essenziale Colonia

Ok, I finally got around to finishing a razor on the ancient ocean jasper that @DeepSea is letting me use. I ran it through a synth progression up to the 12k Shapton and then ran it water-only on the jasper for a while. Didn't count strokes or anything, just ran it on there while a tv show was on in the background for 10 minutes or so, then ran it 30 each on the TM Rough Out and TM Notovan. The edge looked less polished than I get from lapping film(big surprise there), but it was popping hairs on the HHT like a boss, so I pulled it out for today's shave.

Loving...this...soap. I almost wish I'd picked up a few more from Frank while I was breaking the s-word that day, but this is the only one I got and it is a winner for sure. I've been using it with the Rockwell 6c all week for speedy shaves and I continue to be impressed with it. The edge on the Weltmeister did not disappoint, though it could have been a bit smoother. I can easily attribute that to user error since I don't know this stone yet. Three passes and some clean up left me with a very nice DFS+, though there was a bit of sting in the trouble spots when I ran the alum block over them. A few drops of the aftershave followed by a few sprays of the SF Colonia and I was good to go...nowhere. Sadly someone from church tested positive for covid, so we are only live streaming for the next 2-3 weeks. I know that Zoom and the various other networking apps have been a great way to connect during all of this, but there is nothing like the personal contact that comes with a gathering, and I've been missing that the entire time I've been on midnights when 10:00am was the middle of the night for me, sleep-wise.

4/12 SOTD; The Soberversary shave

Razor: Max Sprecher
Brush: Sorrentino Turquoise
Soap: Asylum Shave Works Royal Fougere
Aftershave: Asylum Shave Works Royal Fougere

It's hard to believe that it's been 7 years since my last drink of alcohol. Knowing where I was then and seeing where I am now, I am continually grateful for how far I've come in that time. A few favorites were broken out for the occasion, including the lovely unobtanium Royal Fougere. Three passes left me with a very nice DFS+, and I left the shave den a happy man. It's often the simple things that make a day great.

Back on day shift! We're on 10 hour days and will probably be working weekends for a while, but I'm really looking forward to when my body adjusts to the change in sleep schedule. Thanks for reading and have a great day!
