There and Back Again, A Wet-Shaver's Tale

11th Soberversary shave

Razor: Jernbolaget 6/8
Brush: The First
Soap: S.V. 70th Anniversary
Aftershave: S.V. 70th Anniversary
EDC: Acqua Di Parma Colonia Intensa

11 years sober today, and life is good. What better way to celebrate than with a shave that involves both nostalgia and a few favorites? Starting with the first shave brush I ever turned. First time using CA as a finish as well. As with all of my first brush handles it was finished by screwing a tapping bit into the knot hole and using a drill to rotate the handle so I could apply the finish, sand, and polish. I wanted it to have a bit more heft so there is a huge lead egg sinker epoxied in the middle of it, making it possible to break a toe should it fall on my foot.

S.V's 70th is one of those fantastic soaps that will always be in the collection, and the Jernbolaget was a truly happy find that justifies it's price with every shave. This is my second bottle of Colonia Intensa. Not because I used the first bottle up, but because it took a direct hit in a drive-by on my house when I lived in Flint. Absolutely worth replacing, as I love this juice.

I continue to wake up every day full of gratitude, and a fantastic shave soon followed on this particular morning. Not much more to say other than that, and I hope everyone is well.

Hey Eric - it seems like the journal section of the site is not really your current jam...but I just wanted to drop in after a long while and say hello and hope that things are well with you, shaving and otherwise!

Hey Brad, thanks for popping in. Work is keeping me insanely busy, but I jump on every now and then to see what everyone is up to. I hope all is well with you also.

12th Soberversary shave

Razor: Asylum Rx -V2
Blade: ProGuard
Brush: TSC Anniversary
Shaving Cream: St James of London Black Pepper & Lime
Aftershave: St James of London Black Pepper & Lime
Fragrance: Penhaligon's Savoy Steam EDC

It is true that time seems to speed up as you get older. It doesn't seem like nearly a year since my last soberversary shave. Not much has changed in the last year. I'm still working plenty of overtime and filling my precious spare time with nerd stuff and home improvement. I have been cultivating a full beard for the last 5-6 months, however a visit to a new butche...I mean barber resulted in a...lets call it a reset. Back to just a Van Dyke for the moment. I was disappointed, feeling like several months of effort was wasted, but the upside to that is remembering how nice a good three pass shave can feel.

I went with some new hardware and software this time around. Just recently picked up the Rx, and this was my first time using it. I had picked up a sample pack of St James of London aftershaves when I first got into this hobby and I loved a couple of the scents, so I finally pulled the trigger on them. The shaving cream is very good, though I wouldn't put it in top tier, and the Rx is a fairly aggressive and efficient shaver. Three passes had me smooth and happy. I was able to get a good size bottle of Savoy Steam EDC a few years ago, right before or shortly after it was discontinued, and it is hard to use it sparingly. A very subtle fragrance, yet it smells amazing and I wish I had another dozen bottles, just so I could dump one over my head to see if it could last more than 5-6 hours. Anyway, as challenging as 12 years of sobriety can be it pales in comparison to what I have to do right now. Time to bathe a cat. See some of you on Zoom later, if I survive.

Congrats on another year. As to the barber shame on him for not being good at beard Care. Many dont take their profession serious enough

I just saw this. CONGRATULATIONS on 12 years sober. Every day is a gift. Every night that you don’t drink, you can put your head on your pillow and chalk the day up as a win. No matter how bad the day, by not drinking we won. Do you have the EverythingAA app? Get it if you don’t. Everything important pulled together in one place.
