There and Back Again, A Wet-Shaver's Tale

1/30/21 SOTD - 1st Kamisori shave
Razor: Inoue Tosuke Kamisori
Brush: Sorrentino Turquoise synthetic
Soap: CBL Orion Hammam Spa
Aftershave: CBL Aftershave Tonic
EDP: DUA Invasion of the Barbers

Wow, it has been far too long since I've posted. Quick general update; I'm still working at least 6 days a week, and am currently on midnights for about a month. I grew the beard out for several months, though I kept it lined up with the usual assortment of whisker assassination tools, and just recently shaved it off. The Feather SS was my weapon of choice for most of that time, and I've only recently started breaking out the traditional straights again. There have been a few additions to the den. Mostly frags, but some razors as well, including the kamisori that was used for today's(yesterday's?) shave. Today's soap was a blind buy. As soon as I discovered that Chris had come out with a new soap base I immediately jumped on a tub, as well as some of his post shave tonic and post shave oil. No reading of reviews necessary, just a pulled trigger and some impatient mailbox pacing until it arrived. But enough recap, on to the shave!

I watched the lathering tutorial by @BarberDave before using this soap, and I'm glad I did. It took some time, but what I ended up with was some amazing lather which provided an excellent surface for this new(to me) razor to skate over. The kamisori was honed before it was sent to me, and the guy put possibly the finest shaving edge I have ever used on it. Sharp enough to cut through even my adamantium strands with ease, yet also incredibly smooth. There is certainly a learning curve attached to the kamisori, and I ended up having to break tradition and use the Omote side on a few areas of my neck. I am still relearning my chops with the regular straight razor and the kamisori is a bit more alien than those, so there were a few small nicks, but for the most part it was an exceptional shave. I'll call it DFS+ since there were a couple spots on my neck that I couldn't find a great angle on which resulted in a bare amount of remaining stubble, but the areas that were BBS were incredible. It has been about 24 hours and I'm still in SAS-land. A bit of the CBL Tonic and a couple sprays of Invasion of the Barbers, and I was in my happy place.

I'd like to say that the star of the show was the kamisori, though while it was truly a great shaver it was Chris's products took the spotlight. It will take some more use for me to confirm, but this soap is probably already in my top 5, and might end up taking the #1 spot. Slickness, residual slickness, and post-shave face feel are all as good as or better than any soap or cream I've ever used. If I were to take any points away it would be for how long it took to get the lather the way I wanted it, but that is a pretty insignificant issue. The after shave tonic was also a fantastic product, and between the two my skin felt just wonderful.

If you actually read all the rambling before this, congratulations! You win...well...nothing. But congrats anyway. There will be posts of some of the new acquisitions forthcoming, aaand...there will also be a PIF. It will be a brush, and it will be soon. One that was previously turned, as the workshop is sadly still in storage at the moment, but I think some of you will like it. Thanks for reading and have a great night!
Great return post Eric. Welcome back!

That kamisori is both beautiful and dangerous looking. You're a better man than I. I knick myself just saying kamisori. [emoji38]

Pics or it didn't happen. 🤪

Eric! Glad you could pop in and give an update. Sounds like things are going well for the new year. 😎👍
Thanks Chris! No complaints here, and I'm planning to be a bit more present going forward than the last few months.

A Kamisori ... very nice! Welcome back!
Thanks Tim! I'm really liking the kami. It's a unique shaver, and one I hope to become more proficient with. I generally prefer heavier grinds and more rigid blades, and this one fits the bill for sure.

A few of the recent frag acquisitions. All of these have been on my radar for some time, a few years in the case of both IA offerings.

Eric! Supper happy to see you are still alive! We miss you around here, but completely understand that when you work as much as you do...priorities take a hold!

I whole heartedly agree with you about CBL's newest shave soap. Orion is some pretty awesome stuff, but you definitely have to figure it out first. Once you do that...awesomeness!

And that After Shave Tonic? It might be the pest performing for me. If it isn't the best...It is definitely top five. But I honestly think it is the best!

Hope to see you stop in more often...but we all understand.

It’s great to hear from you!
Thanks Rich!

What do you think of the CBL AS tonic, Eric?
It is one of, if not the best, post shave products I have ever used. I have annoyingly complicated skin, and have used a LOT of post shave products to find one that does everything that I need it to. I usually end up combining a couple to get the effect I prefer, but this stuff does it all.

Thanks Don! I hear what you're saying about priorities, but there is also no reason that my friends on TSC can't be a priority as well. I've been pretty socially passive for too long while getting used to all the new things in my life, and it's past time to get a little more interaction in.

Ok, possibly my favorite recent acquisition. I was browsing the bay while on my lunch break at work, and, as I occasionally do, typed Jernbolaget in the search. I keep my settings on "ending soonest", and this one popped up with 40 seconds left. That gave me just enough time to get a decent look at the pics, realize that this is one of my grail razors, decide on the highest price I was willing to pay, and bid with a few seconds left.

This one makes me think of a CVH MK32, but probably before the MK32 existed. It looks like it just came out of the factory, and I'm actually afraid to attempt honing it, so will probably send it out. If it shaves half as good as it looks, I'm in for a treat.

2/1/21 SOTD

Razor: Shumate
Brush: Sorrentino Turquoise
Soap: CBL Orion Hammam Spa
Aftershave: CBL After Shave Tonic
EDT: Penhaligon's Sartorial

This was yesterday's shave, and I'm just now getting around to posting it. I'm hooked on the Orion soap base, and I'm really digging the Hammam Spa scent as well. Grabbed the Shumate, which is one of my favorite razors to shave with. I'm going to have to go through my stash and re-hone everything(and maybe keep a journal this time), but I believe this one was one of the first razors I honed on the Jnat, and the edge came out surprisingly good for an early attempt on that stone. I don't remember the last time I shaved with a straight razor that I didn't hone, but after using the edge that was put on the Kamisori I'm realizing that I have a ways to go. My edges are plenty serviceable, but I'll seek to improve them.

Three passes with the Shumate left me with a DFS+. Still relearning the traditional straight, and there are a couple trouble spots on my neck that will require some advanced techniques. The razor might have been finished on a coti with how smooth it was. A few drops of the tonic and a few sprays of Sartorial put a spring in my step, and life is good.

Razor: Inoue Tosuke Kamisori
Brush: Sorrentino Turquoise
Soap: SV Manna di Sicilia
Aftershave: SV Manna di Sicilia
EDT: Robert Graham Valour

Another amazing shave with this kamisori. Still learning the ins and outs of shaving with one, so extra time is taken, but I'm digging it and will probably pick up more. SV's Manna di Sicilia gave me some fantastic lather(as usual), and pulled off a very nice 3-pass DFS+. Followed the shave up with a couple drops of the matching AS, and a couple sprays of Valour capped it all off beautifully. Love this frag!

The most recent acquisition. It clearly needs some restoration, but almost all of what you see seems to be just tarnish with a couple small rust spots. There is a tiny chip at the toe, but that might mostly come out while cleaning the rest of it up. It is a quarter hollow, which is my grind of preference, and the scales are bone. There is some hone wear, but I think it'll look beautiful once it's done.

The PIF is up and running, and can be found Here.

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Very nice!

Can’t wait to see that restoration.
The bench buffer is in storage with the rest of the workshop and I'm too lazy to go the ascending grit sandpaper route, so it'll be a while before a full restore can be done on it, but I did a little bit and can tell that it's going to be nice
Wow are the words actually stamped on the blade instead of etched?

I thought the same thing!
Yes, yes they are. So we have a slower speed buffing wheel at work. It only has one wheel, and we only have white polishing compound for it, which is just for putting a higher polish instead of actually removing rust or tarnish, but with how nice it came out just from a few minutes on that wheel I can tell this is going to turn out beautifully when I can do a full restore. The downside is that the scales are cracked at the hinge pin on the back. It's a shame since they would have cleaned up really well, but if I ever want it to open and close without risk of falling out of the scales I'll probably have to replace them. I can also see the stamp on the tang now. It says "Friedmann & Lauterjungs Celebrated Razor".

Welcome back. I have been considering jumping on a kamisori, but just don't know much about them. Looked at a few on the bay but other than the best size for me I'm lost.
