The wonderful excesses of acquisition disorders...and wet shaving

Watching your video as we speak and just read this entry. No blood = great shave! I love the way that blade looks...but I am sure that is a more advanced razor and not for an amateur like me! I'm going to pull the trigger on Summer Fig at sometime...I think I would really enjoy that scent.

Thanks Don! The razor takes a little getting used to, but it's a great shaver once you figure out what you can and can't do with it.

Looks like you could chop a tree down with that blade! Video later in the day.

It can be quite intimidating for sure Dave!

Satsumas are plentiful in southeast Alabama. They were in the backyard at my grandparents' house, and they're in the backyard at my aunt and uncle's house. Awesome.

I'm intrigued with the A&E Summer Fig scent. I've got a layover in Chicago in a few weeks, and a trip to Merz Apothecary will be a priority. I hope that they carry the A&E line so that I can check 'em out.

I'm curious if they do carry A&E soaps...the Summer Fig scent is one that you might like. It's similar in scent type to Asian Plum, but has less of the oriental spices than that scent profile.

One thing I want to point out is the citrus top-note of this soap. It is a definite hit and run thing. You smell it immediately, then just as soon as it registers what you just smelled, it pulls a Kaiser Soze and is GONE, leaving you wondering if you really smelled it in the first place. But it does lend the necessary brightness to what would otherwise be a pretty dark, somewhat sweet scent profile.

Victory Shaving Company Champaign Lady | Hartford Cutlery Extra Hollow Ground 5/8”
Currently on Shave #581 | Straight shave #359

I have been threatening to pull this soap out for about a week now, and finally did so today. It’s absolutely one of the favorite scents that I’ve tried, reminding me of Dell’s fresh squeezed lemonade at the local fair when I was a kid. The nostalgia is strong with this one. Lather quality wise, it’s good, not excellent, as good if not a little better than Stirling. Some might interpret their experience differently, and not see it that way, which is perfectly fine. That’s where the YMMV acronym comes into play.

Using the Wild West Brushworks BOSS today, I was able to get a very nice lather. The Hartford was incredibly smooth and efficient, and took care of the 24 hours growth without any issues. This is honestly, probably my best shaving razor in the den currently. I can get an easy DFS with zero sting from this razor with no effort; one of the few straight razors I can go on auto-pilot with, or at least as close as possible with a straight razor. With the lemon and lavender scent notes in this soap, it only made sense to go with the similarly scented Lav Sublime Concerto aftershave by Wholly Kaw. It also has menthol in it, so it’s almost an exact match. Topped off with the Penhaligon’s BB EdT…threw on my Hawaiian shirt…it’s SUNDAY, gentlemen! Hope it’s blessed for everyone, wherever you are.

Thanks for reading, have a great day!

Thanks Don! Sunday is one of the few days during the week I can actually get away with wearing it, as long as there are no visitors coming in.

Clown Puke | Colonial General Brass | Feather Pro-Guard (3)
Currently on Shave #582 | Straight shave still at #359

I wasn’t feeling the straight again this morning, (it’s happening more and more often), so I reached for a no-thought safety razor in the Colonial General. I already had it loaded with a Feather Pro-Guard with 2 shaves under its belt already, so easy peezy, lemon squeezy. For the brush, I pulled out the Wolf Whiskers blackwolf, This is the original blackwolf knot, and it’s just so unbelievably soft, almost as much as the cashmere brushes I have. The soap was the only “new” thing today. I say new in quotations, just for the simple fact that I’ve used every component of it…just not in this manner. I took a que from KJ and combined most of my samples into one jar; in this case 20 samples. Off the top of my head here is what is included in this Clown Puke:

Mystic Water Yellow Rose
Mystic Water Sandalwood
Stirling The Lounge (half sample puck)
Geo F. Trumper Eucris
Geo F. Trumper Sandalwood
Mickey Lee Soapworks Drunken Goat
Mickey Lee Soapworks La Belle du Sud
Mickey Lee Soapworks The Kraken
Chiseled Face Groomatorium Cryogen
Chiseled Face Groomatorium Summer Storm
Chiseled Face Groomatorium Tradewinds
Los Angeles Shaving Soap Company Topanga Fougere
Caties Bubbles Purple Grapefruit
Declaration Grooming Contemplation
Storybook Soapworks Hallward’s Dream
Martin de Candre Fougere
Captains Choice North
Captains Choice 45[sup]th[/sup] Parallel
First Canadian Esther’s Peppermint & Grapefruit
Barrister & Mann Reserve Cool

So, KJ wasn’t kidding when he said that he was surprised how well it lathered up. This stuff is awesome, from a performance perspective! Scent wise, it’s a mixed bag. There are some things that don’t necessarily go together, but all-in-all, it’s not unpleasant, and doesn’t linger after the shave. So you can use whichever aftershave and frag you want. Three passes with the General left me DFS+, zero irritation or feedback from the alum, and I’m happy. I topped off with some Clubman and Sung Homme EdT, and it’s a fresh smelling day today. Video is posted…have a great Monday, everyone!

Thanks for reading, have a great day!

I have been working on my Clown Puke for about two years now. The container is pretty full...but I want to fill it up and then press it down into a real tub. I have no idea what all is in it...but I know there is all manner of soaps in there! Great shave Josh!

....then just as soon as it registers what you just smelled, it pulls a Kaiser Soze and is GONE....

GREAT movie reference!!!

Hey there brother, you getting tired of the maintenance with the straight or the mornings just coming too early?

Interesting you guys say these mixed soaps have good performance. I'm thinking of those peanut butters and jelly jars where they are put in the same jar in alternating stripes. I see the next new wave in shave soaps. They'll find to components that make a super performing soap, but can't be mixed together. Bam! Your chocolate is in my peanut butter and they'll put them into in tub in alternating thin stripes or something.

Another clown puke convert!

Indeed I am KJ!!

Nice shave and video Josh. I bet you know when you get to the Cryogen area of that puck

It'll be a refreshing change...though knowing my luck I'll hit it in the middle of winter. LOL

Just a phenomenal movie...regardless of what the actors have done in real life.

Just feeling the safety razors a little more right now. Don't know if it's a maintenance issue, time issue, or just wanting something a little different issue. LOL.

hahahaha! It's a wholesalers dream concoction!

I need to watch your videos as I am behind but I enjoyed the reads!

Thanks Chad!

That’s a lot of high quality chunks in that puke! Good stuff!

Hahahaha....yeah, that's a product of me being somewhat of a soap snob. LOL
