The wonderful excesses of acquisition disorders...and wet shaving

I'm not much of a B&M fan...but I might need to give it another fair shake. But I will say that scent sounds divine! I am starting to dig some of these floral scents.

Stay safe Josh. I know exactly what you are going through and sometimes I still have some images in my head. The routine of some that stuff makes of feel invincible and that is when error creeps in. Stay alert no matter how mundane life seems. I know I don't have to tell you...but it makes me feel better at least by saying it.

Great Shave Josh!

Thanks Don! I'm putting together some samples to donate to the sample trade, I'll draw one up for you of Adagio. I think you might like it.

As to the other stuff...as you know it's always there in the back of your mind, so your attention to detail is slightly higher than normal. Thankfully, I'm in a relatively good spot, surrounded by good people, so there's that. Thanks for the thoughts!

I liked the scent of the original Adagio.

And nice looking Paladin!

Thanks Chris! The original Adagio passed me by before I knew what it was, pre-wet shaving days.

Declaration Grooming Colonia Basalmica | Wade & Butcher 6/8" near wedge
Currently on Shave #577 | Straight shave #356

So another day, another day. LOL. Yesterday was a tester, for sure, but I got through it and got up ready for whatever today would bring. On deck, and waiting for me was Declaration Grooming's Colonia Basalmica, a collaboration with Chatillon Lux and in their Bison Tallow base. I wasn't sure I liked this scent at first. It had the colonia notes in it, which I love, but it was equally strong in an earthy, pungent vetiver way as well, which I'm not too big on. While it's never going to be in my top 15 scented soaps, it has somewhat grown on me, however. The citrus top notes really do a good job of toning down the vetiver punch and create a much more well rounded scent.

For the blade today, the Wade & Butcher was up, all dressed up in some new shoes provided by Mr. Eric Sorrentino, Smattayu. Pictures really don't do this any justice, but it's a beautiful piece of Maccassar Ebony, and very well crafted scales that, as Eric has stated, have enough CA on them to be bullet proof. The brush is also maccassar ebony, but a much lighter colored piece. It was made by Excalibur Rustics, but refinished by Eric with a 24mm cashmere synthetic. The loft he used is perfect, deep enough to provide enough backbone, but not too deep to take away the pillow soft feeling of the cashmere tips. Loading was easy, and with enough water, a great lather was made. Three passes later, and while it wasn't the greatest or closest of shaves, it was satisfying non-the-less. If forced to grade it, I would give it a CCS+/DFS-. I topped off with some cucumber Thayer's, and the matching aftershave splash by Chatillon Lux. This goes on seemingly heavy, and you would think it's going to end up tacky, but it absorbs pretty quick, leaving your skin nice and hydrated. The longevity on these aftershaves is decent for me as well...this one lasting about 3-4 hours...not bad for an aftershave.

Just placed a couple of orders, and have one left to make on the 27th. Outside of two specific soaps that are coming out, that should wrap up my acquisitions for the year. (I say that now...LOL)

Hope everyone is having a great hump day!

Thanks for the review on the soap and AS. I think this one can still be found and I wonder if I should pull the trigger on it.

I hear that Eric guy does pretty good work!

BWHAHAHAHAHHAH!!!! Oh wait....he doesn't really think anyone believes that? Does he?

Great shaves, reads, and pictures Josh!

Don't know what happened where you are at, but as Don said keep your head down and on a swivel!

If you're a colonia fan, and a vetiver fan, this is a NO BRAINER. DO IT. LOL. Thanks Don!

Fantastic photo!

Thanks Chris!

hmmm...I may have been speaking about just software. I did forget about one other that will be purchased. So, with the upcoming release by Stirling of Varen (fougere), and A&E's Which One's Pink?, I'm also planning on getting Declaration Grooming's Darkfall as well as Stirling Christmas Eve. JoHS may make it in there as well...not sure at this point.

Hope not. Great shave Josh. I saw your pic and then the video and thought yeah the video didn't capture the colors of those scales at all. It's gorgeous !!

Thanks Dave!

Thanks Craig...it wasn't specifcally where I was, but the alarm went off all the same. It can be read about in most publications. Basically, idiot people doing idiot things.

Cold River Soap Works Lavish | Merkur Futur on "2" | Personna Platinum (2)
Currently on Shave #578 | Straight shave still at #356

I'm still in the process of trying to get on a somewhat normal schedule, so it was up early to start the day. With that being said, I only had 20 hours or so of growth, and wasn't really feeling the straight this morning. So I grabbed the safety razor that is every bit as aggressive as a straight, (when opened all the way up), the Merkur Futur. This thing is wicked...when opened all the way up, it's blade gap is a whopping 1.75mm!!! Even dialed all the way down, it's at an intimidating 1.12mm gap...just short of a Gillette Adjustable opened all the way up. Here's the chart I posted:

So I pulled out the CRSW Lavish, one of their Select line of soaps that was graciously PIF'd to me by cmh737. This is the 2nd time I've used this soap, the first being a somewhat lackluster experience. Today was quite different, and I was able to get a very nice lather, with the only noticeable gig being a lack of residual slickness. To be fair, I applied post-shave before I could give a decent post shave feel assessment, but I didn't feel any drying in between passes, and there is plenty of skin food in the ingredient list to lead me to believe that it's fairly moisturizing.

I loaded the Futur with a Personna Platinum on its second use. These are probably my favorite DE blade out there, with Astras, Nacets, and Perma Sharps coming in next. Three passes with the Futur left me DFS+, and absolutely zero sting from both the alum and aftershave. Speaking of aftershave, I used Wholly Kaw's Fern Concerto; the citrus heavy fougere played well with the bergamot and herbal scent notes in the soap, finishing off with some Pen's Blenheim Bouquet. This was one of the better shaves I've experienced over the past few months, so all in all, an absolutely wonderful start to the day! Video should be posted by 4am EST....

Have a great Thursday everyone!

Nice shave Josh. Tried the Futur (Don't know what setting) from my Father in Law some years ago and said to myself, "I don't think so" VERY heavy and aggressive to me at the time. Would probably be a different experience now but the memory sticks. Great shave

Holy Cow! That is some blade gap there! I knew they were aggressive...but I didn't think they were that aggressive! I liked the CRSW Select versions of their soaps just fine...that is until I tried the Glide version also PIF'd to me by our very own cmh737. Glad you had a great shave! Look forward to the video!

Thanks Dave. Once you realize that you can't use any pressure, and that it has more than enough weight to do the work for you, the blade gap becomes less and less of an issue. Plus, you can just ride the cap and avoid the safety bar if it's that intimidating. Lots of blade feel, but aside from that, an incredibly smooth shaver. The only other complaint I have with it is that the head is very bulky, making getting into areas such as under the nose a little tricky.

Yeah, it's a beast for sure, but a great shaver. Part of me wishes I had gotten a couple of scents from them, but since they don't ship APO, it wasn't worth the extra effort to get a tub or three out here. There are plenty of other soaps now a days that perform just as well or better that I can get shipped out here.

Outstanding! Can't ask for anything better than that.

Thanks Chris, and thank you for the generous PIF!
