The wonderful excesses of acquisition disorders...and wet shaving

I definitely think you can get a better shave with that soap. Oh well...but your pic is awesome!

Darn! Hope the second round goes more smoothly!

Great photo today. Hard to beat a Stark and the ebonite!

Wild West Shaving Co. Rose Dunn | Friodur 472 6/8"

Currently on shave #574 | Straight shave #354

This is it! The last soap in my den I have yet to use, that I'm going to use. (I have a couple of Haslinger Soaps that have not been opened that I'm planning on including in some of the PIF's.) That being said, there will be a couple of new acquisitions coming in over the next few weeks, but that's neither here, nor there. This is about the Rose Dunn scented soap from Wild West Shaving Co. This is a rose forward scent, with supporting notes of coconut and amber. The coconut gives the soap a sweeter smell, while the amber gives a nice depth, and almost powdery smell. Lather-wise, it's a solid performer, I would place it in Tier 1 box 3. The only thing holding it back from being a box 2 or elite soap, in my eyes is the packaging. But the packaging that it comes in has its own benefits. Due to its size, it's probably the best travel container out of any of the artisans that I've encountered. The puck does easily come out if you want to palm lather, or, treat it like a shaving stick. The puck easily fits into the hand. I'm stubborn, and I still loaded from the container, however. (see the video that is going to be posted in about 2 hours from now, around 8am EST)

The shave went well, three passes and no clean-up, which has become the norm. As stated in the upcoming video, I don't really do an ATG pass anymore. I tend to get a little more irritation, and it doesn't leave enough stubble to realistically shave the next day. So, WTG, XTG (W-E), XTG (E-W) was the order of the day, and the normal DFS+ was the result with no irritation. I followed up with the Thayers Rose Petal (instead of the normal cucumber), and Lisa's Somali Rose Elixir. If you aren't entirely opposed to salves, balms and the like, and haven't tried one of Lisa's Elixir's, you're doing yourself a massive disservice. They go on and immediately begin soaking into the skin, leaving it feeling well moisturized and far from oily or greasy. I finished off with some Penhaligon's English Fern. Now, it's a Fougere, with no rose in it. But the floral notes of the EF blended beautifully with the Somali Rose Elixir...THIS WAS AWESOME!!!! Good start to the day for sure...hopefully the day goes as well as it started.

Rose, coconut, and amber...what a mix!

Glad today’s shave went better. Congrats on making it through all of your soaps!

Saponificio Varesino Opuntia (B4.3) | Timeless Bronze OC | Gillette Nacet (2)

Currently on shave #575 | Straight shave still at #354

An earlier shave, as my schedule is again changing a bit, and I only had about 20 hours of growth to take care of. So out came the safety razors, this morning going with the Timeless Bronze OC, since quite a few other members are using a razor from the same company. I loaded a Nacet blade into the razor that had one use on it. For soap, I debated a little while what to go with, and ended up grabbing SV's Opuntia. I almost went with Stella Alpina instead, but the Opuntia won out after a few minutes of contemplation. For brush, I used the new Shavemac 26mm Silvertip 2-band fan with the custom handle.

Unusually for me, I face lathered this morning, as I've found that SV reacts better to that than to bowl lathering. I had oodles of unctious lather after doing so, though I did go a little heavy on the first two applications, leaving me the scraps for passes 2 and 3. (first application was for the hot towel) All the same, I was able to eek out a solid DFS with only one weeper on the right corner of my mouth obtained on the first pass. It was closed up by the end of the 2nd pass, and was the only spot that I experienced any kind of alum feedback.

I topped off with the matching aftershave, no fragrance, and it gave me a great start to the day! I did video the shave, not knowing if I was going to end up using any of it. I ended up using most of the footage, and taped a wrap-up after the fact. All in all, a pleasant shave. I have to say the brush was fantastic today, and the funk from the knot is slowly disappearing. Nice razor, nice soap, nice brush, and nice aftershave...all around nice!

Have a great Monday everyone!

Great shave Josh! Glad the soap did well even if the lather petered put a bit at the end.

I must say I’m heartened a little bit to hear that your last two passes with the Shavemac were light lather, maybe my Shavemac issues aren’t just me!

Some great shaves and pics lately, Josh.

Thanks Doug!

Thanks Chris! So my first two passes, I really pasted on the lather, and didn't have the normal bowl to turn to when the load in the brush got low. I chalk it up more to user error than anything else.

Barrister & Mann Adagio | Filarmonica Doble Temple 14 8/8” JMP
Currently on Shave #576 | Straight shave #355

Another shave today, and an open choice of soaps. It’s almost overwhelming in some ways and makes choosing a soap that much more difficult. They’re all so good! So instead of pining over some of the other scents, and which one to use, I went with one of my favorite scented soaps, Barrister & Mann Adagio. This is such an addicting scent to me, as well as nostalgic. It does remind me of the scent of spring in New England, with the only thing missing being the smell of the ocean salt in the air. It starts off with lime right up front which is sweetened by some cherry. Violet and lily of the valley gives it a sweet floral touch, while the musk grounds everything quite well. The addition of menthol makes it a perfect summer soap. Some people aren’t that big of fans of it, either the soap or the aftershave, but that’s right in line with how B&M is perceived. You either love the scent or hate it. There is rarely any in between.

So I did record the shave, but was kind of interrupted, as people are stupid. I’m sure if you went to Reuters, you can find out what was going on. Outside of just a general warning, all was good at my locale. The shave went well, all things considered. My autofocus was out of whack for the 2[sup]nd[/sup] segment of the video, (during the actual shave), and I wasn’t going to go back and try and simulate the shave. So, a comedy of stuff combined to make what ended up being a decent video and definitely memorable. The alum gave a little bit of spotty feedback after three passes, but nothing really beyond the “yep, you just ran a naked blade over your face” level of feedback. Lots and LOTS of glugs of aftershave followed, with some balm and Le Grand Chypre EdT / Paladin unscented balm finishing off the shave. Yep, Josh likee.

The video will be uploaded by about 6 am EST. I’m enjoying the video journey so far. One thing about that is that due to some time crunch issues, unless I’m doing a full review or first impression video, I’m not bothering to list scent notes, ingredients or give a full rating. It’s just the shave and some “conversation”.

Thanks for reading, have a great day!
