The wonderful excesses of acquisition disorders...and wet shaving

Very nice shave Josh. Oleo Soapworks is one that I'll have to check out soon. Keeping your dad in prayer.

Nice shave. Glad your dad realized what was going on and went to the doctor. Will be praying for a speedy recovery.

Man, good for your dad for getting to the hospital. Lots of us stubborn guys wouldn't go.

Thank's Don!

Glad to hear that your Dad is on the mend!

Thanks Chris!

He's particularly stubborn...but didn't want this hanging over his head when he was visiting with his granddaughters, so at least he took it upon himself to start the process of getting healthy.

Ariana & Evans Grecian Horse | C.V. Heljestrand Mk*31
Currently on Shave #509 | Straight shave #307

I wasn’t planning on using anything but a new soap today…that is, until expected mail didn’t show up yesterday. So, after some debate, I pulled out the Grecian Horse from Ariana & Evans. I paired it with the big Brad Sears “Yokozuna”, a 30mm 3-band Manchurian, and my newer (to me) C.V. Heljestrand Mk*31. I also wasn’t planning on doing a video, but ended up doing one anyways. I kept it going for the first two passes. The lather was typical A&E…slick, thick and just a pleasure to use, and the scent strength is just awesome with Peter’s soaps. He definitely does not skimp on the fragrance and essential oils, at all.

Three passes, some clean-up, and I can say, an hour later, I’m BBS. I did get extremely aggressive with the ATG and clean-up passes, paying for it with a little lingering irritation. The alum was about as vocal as it’s been in the past year…quite bracing. Following the matching aftershave, I went with some Paladin balm infused with Penhaligon’s Endymion, then followed up with the matching flanker, Endymion Concentre. Good start to the morning!!

Mail Call

So my order of Mystic Water came in a little late, (by a day) than I was hoping. But, it did arrive, so I have my next three+ shaves figured out!

Mystic Water Rosalimone
Mystic Water Sandalwood Rose
Mystic Water Bergamot, Cedar, Juniper

Michelle also included samples of Sandalwood and Yellow Rose (which was in my cart, but I was more interested in the Rosalimone and Sandalwood Rose…Should have just gone with it!) I have a bunch of other soaps coming in over the next 2 weeks, so stay tuned for a plethora of reviews and videos to be forthcoming.

I’m still planning on doing an intro to straight razors as well as a stropping 102 tutorial, going over x-strokes, different strop leathers, stropping routines, and how to repair a strop if/when you cut it. I’m also planning on doing a bowl lathering tutorial.

Thanks for all the well-wishes and prayers for Dad. He made it home mid-afternoon the day after his procedure and is recuperating just fine. He says he’s going to be making a lot of changes, especially to his diet, but while he was telling me this he was in the process of making a couple of batches of chocolate chip cookies from scratch. I just shook my head a laughed….sometimes being happy is more important.

Have a great day, everyone!

Great mail call. I am looking forward to your review on the Rosalimone as that is one I have been eyeballing.

I am watching your shave as I type this.

and who said Chocolate Chip cookies can't be part of a diet? LOL

Thanks Chad. That's the one that I'm most looking forward to trying, though the Bergamot, Cedar and Juniper smells amazing as well...heck, all 5 soaps smell amazing. Who am I kidding. LOL

Nice to hear that your dad is on the mend.

And nice mail call. Of the 5 new MW soaps you just got, I've tried all but the Rosalimone. I have the Rosalimone sample in my travel bag - just haven't used it yet. Of those 4 that I have used, the Yellow Rose is the best, hands down!

Good shave and mail call!

Looking forward to hearing about the Sandalwood & Rose.

Great shave and mail call.

Glad your dad is doing well. I wish him luck with his life changes.

Thanks Chris. The Yellow Rose will probably be inbound here shortly...not when, though. Out of these, they all have quite a lot that I like about the scents...all for different reasons.

Good shave and mail call!

Looking forward to hearing about the Sandalwood & Rose.

Thanks Chris! I'll definitely be doing reviews on all the soaps, including the Sandalwood & Rose.

Great shave and mail call.

Glad your dad is doing well. I wish him luck with his life changes.

Thanks Doug!

Saturday, 2 June 2018 - No shave today!

It’s an off day for shaving, and it’s a good thing as there was some lingering tenderness in a couple of spots around the face from yesterday’s shave. I was a bit lazy last night and didn’t put together another tutorial video, but will probably do video for the shave tomorrow, as well as the bowl lathering tutorial.

In other news, some more mail came in today from Ariana & Evans…L’Orange Verte and Club N’Roses. L'Orange Verte has been getting some extremely good reviews across the board, while Club N'Roses...I love a good rose scented soap and the artwork just pushed it over the edge since they released it in their Goat Milk formula. Here are the notes for each:

L'Orange Verte: Bergamot, tangerine, lemon peel, orange, black pepper, lavender, neroli, oakmoss & patchouli

Club N'Roses: Bergamot, Jasmine, Black Rose, Exotic Spices, Oakmoss, Cedarwood, Agarwood, Tobacco, Scotch Whiskey and Haitian Vetiver

As usual with A&E soaps, the SoS off of each tub is fairly substantial. The L'Orange Verte is a little stouter than the Club N'Roses. L'Orange Verte, I definitely get the orange, tangerine and Bergamot, while the black pepper and lavender round it out and give it a softer feel. There is a slight earthiness coming through off of the tub, but it's slight. The artwork on the tub is a throwback to A Clockwork Orange...one of my favorite movies.

The Club N'Roses...I definitely get the floral jasmine and rose, but the exotic spices and woody accords along with the tobacco give it a real nice dark undertone...almost smokey, which I would imagine is the hatian vetiver coming through. I'm not getting the whiskey note at all, though I'm imagining that that's part of the darker depth of the scent that I'm getting. Artwork is, of course, reminiscent of the Guns N'Roses avatar...quite striking.

I’ll be doing reviews and videos of each soap when I get around to using them…so as it stands right now, I’ve got 5 soaps that are waiting in the queue to be tried. Which one do you want to see me use first? Whichever soap gets the most votes, gets used.

Mystic Water Rosalimone
Mystic Water Sandalwood & Rose
Mystic Water Bergamot, Cedarwood, Juniper
A&E Club N’Roses
A&E L’Orange Verte

Thanks for reading and have a great weekend everyone!

Stop with the A&E shaves! Seriously...I just made a rather large purchase that my wife wasn't all that happy with. And now you are tempting me with soaps and aftershaves that sound incredible and people are raving about! You are killing me!

Sorry Don...but just FYI, they're releasing (to club members today and to the public on the 9th) a new scented soap and AS today....Summer Fig. From the early reviews, it's not overly sweet. Peter also said that he didn't change the recipe, but did alter the percentages to make the soap even more slick...how I don't know. Looking forward to picking up a tub!
