The wonderful excesses of acquisition disorders...and wet shaving

I think I am all caught up now Josh. Wonderful mail calls over the past couple of weeks. Did you ever get the longevity of shave that you have come to expect out of the SS? My experience with the DX is that I can get a similar longevity with it as I can with a traditional straight razor, but I do have to take care of technique in order to accomplish it.

Catching up Josh and I guess I will have to pull the trigger on the Melonade Great reads

Wish I remembered what I thought about Mystic Waters. I'm pretty sure I tried it once, but it must not have struck my fancy. From your comments, maybe it was just that is was good, but not good enough to push others out of the den.

Great pic Josh...and love the 'Crat!

Thanks Don!

HEy Josh. Getting caught up from the weekend. You had a mail call and some shaves. If the Mystic Waters was not to your liking still, like others are getting I recommend one of two things. 1. Try the Shave Stick version (already read why you steer away from them) or 2. Face lather and load more! Add water when you think its about the break add a tiny bit more and BOOM perfect lather!

Thanks Chad...I actually got a very good lather from the soap, and had it in pretty good fettle as far as water is concerned. I've got another couple of MW soaps to go through and might try face lathering one or both of them to see if the results are any better.

Thanks Walt...the longevity of the SS was somewhere in between the SE General and a DE razor. Not too bad considering that it was the first time using that type of razor.

Thanks Dave! The Melonade is a great scent. I'm going to have to use it again to see if I have the same skin reaction to it.

Nice couple of shaves.

That 'Crat is in really great condition.

Thanks Doug! I was lucky and picked it up for a relative song with the original case, as it was mismarked.

Thanks Dave...that's about where I am right now with MW...it's a good soap, but from a performance standpoint, outside of the post shave moisturizing properties isn't something that blows my socks off. I have another couple of scents to try out, so that might change with a few more uses.

The mailman was good to me today! My order of Soapy Science came in...Doc's Special Blend and Lollipop Citrus.

Initial impressions of the scents are pretty good. DSB has a pretty heavy menthol or mint smell coming off of it, but you can get a hint of all the other goodness underneath that. I'm sure once I lather it up all of the notes will become more apparent. The Lollipop Citrus, as Randall mentioned, smells very reminiscent of a Dum Dum Pop...pretty darned enjoyable! Packaging is very nice, though I would prefer that the scent of each soap be marked on the top label. (I understand having to keep overhead low and go with a standardized label) It was an easy fix for me to throw a label for each one on the side of the tub. The soaps are on the harder side of the spectrum...I'm looking forward to testing them out and seeing how they perform! High expectations!

It's been a pretty hectic day for me out here, so I'll get to all the journal posts when I can. Have a great day everyone!

So the names aren't on the tops of the tubs, and you said you put a label on the side. Are the names of the scents not on there at all?

There's a bottom label with the scent name and ingredient list...but I put labels on all my soaps that don't already have side labels since I stack them. The only ones without side labels that I don't are ones that have unique containers and Stirling samples.

So many good soaps on the market now, and this one with a great cause.

Thanks Walt! It really is refreshing to see artisans like this who give back to the community!

Nice mail call! Looking forward to hearing more about it.

Thanks Tom! Review will be posted shortly!

Great mail call Josh!

Thanks Don!

Thanks Doug!

Uh huh....LOL. Thanks Dave!

Soapy Science Lollipop Citrus | Eiko 6/8” near wedge
Currently on Shave #512| Straight shave #309

Another new soap this morning, Soapy Science Lollipop Citrus. This is from a small Father / Daughter team in North Georgia who started making soaps for a science project, learning about the saponification process. It’s a tallow first product with a bunch of good skin food in it to help with the post-shave. A full review is in the review section, along with a video.

With this being a new soap base that I’m trying out, I grabbed a synthetic brush, going with the Wolf Whiskers Blackwolf this morning. The Eiko got the call for razor today. This really is a fun razor to use, but takes quite a bit of concentration to get right. The scales have a bend in them that can get a little awkward at times, especially when stropping. This is the razor that has given the worst cuts to my strops because the scales have caught my hand and prevented a good flip. So this razor demands some very deliberate use, but when it’s right, it’s a phenomenal shaver.

The soap lathered up nicely, and has one of the best sheens that I’ve seen out of any soap that I’ve used to date. It was a little dry upon application to the face, so a little face lathering ensued to get the water ratio right, and into the shave we went. I did three passes this morning, with no ATG, going WTG, XTG, GTG (opposite direction as XTG). No clean-up. I’m going to go with this and see what the stubble looks like tomorrow morning…if there’s enough, I’ll be shaving daily for a while. Irritation was minimal, with the usual spots giving a tad bit of feedback from the alum, more a testament to a breakdown in technique with this razor than anything else, but all in all, much less than usual. I followed up with B&M’s Le Grand Chypre aftershave and some Davidoff Hot Water to round the shave off. Kind of a mishmash of software, but it worked pretty well together.

One other thing that's in the SOTD picture is the pomade that I used today. Not going to get into performance, as the Nostalgia Medium Hold Water Based Pomade was reviewed by Jim over in that particular thread, and it's 100% spot on. But I will talk about the scent...this particular one is the Fruit Scoops scent. It's been described as Fruit Loops...and that's exactly right. But it's not Fruit Loops out of the box. It's Fruit Loops when it's in the bowl with milk. Quite unique, and as a bonus, it doesn't go punky like milk will in high heat. The scent stays pretty consistent through the day, as I get whiffs of it from the time I apply it until I finish work for the night and go to bed 17 hours later. Pretty impressive stuff!

Have a great day everyone!

Great SOTD post Josh. I use the Nostalgic water base pomade every day, except I opted for the firm hold version. I have one jar scented in GTB, and another unscented. If you want to try an unscented version of their pomade, just email them that you would like some unscented. On their next batch, they will remove your tub of product before adding fragrance. After you email them with your request, the will instruct you to order the product you want in any scent, and they will take care of the rest (I don't recall if there was an option to leave a note with the order, but I think not). Any rate, I ordered two unscented a good while back, the water base like you have in firm, and an oil base in firm. Both came in about a week.

I have only tried the oil base pomade a couple of times. For some reason I have not gotten it to work well for me. I enjoy the water base product so much I just abandoned trying after a couple of attempts. If you check ingredients, even the water base product has waxes (not water soluble) in it. I tend to judge these by how difficult they are to shampoo out the next day. A strictly water soluble product shampoos out very easily the next morning, the Nostalgic water base is intermediate and the Nostalgic oil base is the most difficult to shampoo of any hair product I have ever used.

Good stuff. I prefer the videos you post, but it’s tougher to find the time I can watch them. I share my office at work and burnt the shave videos at home bridge when I started all this.
