The wonderful excesses of acquisition disorders...and wet shaving

Okay...just checked out the A&E website...I am VERY impressed with their scent selections and honestly, there isn't a scent profile that I wouldn't at least try on a blind buy. Very Sophisticated profiles and they seem to be pretty high end selections without prices being overly outrageous!

Nice Mail Calls! I still have to try the A&E sample you sent me, but I'm sure there will be a tub or two in my future. Peter has a well deserved reputation in fragrances, and if the A&E soap performs as well as my tub of Hemingway, picking up a couple is a no-brainer.

Great shave. With a name that close, I wonder if it is based on the Hermes fragrance D'Orange Vert.

Josh, just the “clif notes” version: which A&E soaps have you used thus far, and how is the SOS?

Strength of scent on all the soaps I've tried so far is at least 3/5 off the tub and grow when lathered. The scents are all pretty complex, and do evolve with definitive top/middle notes and occasionally a distictive base. Up to this point I've used the following:

Grecian Horse - modeled after Parfums de Marly Pegasus, it bears some decent resemblence to Endymion and Davidoff Hotwater.
Asian Plum - A spicy plum accord...but much more going on than that. On the sweeter side of the house without being cloying.
SoCal Hipster - Pineapple and banana are the main top notes, but it evolves into some darker notes. Reminds me of a real tropical fruit smoothie, (not a sweetened juice smoothy) sitting on the beach.
Warrior of Howling Fjord - Reminiscent of Aventus to my nose in the way it evolves, with the exception that the pineapple is replaced by bergamot, mandarin and neroli. The sandalwood, black currant and musk really provide a nice backdrop to the citrus opening.

Looking at the scent notes and reviews for that scent, it's similar, but I'm not getting the green off of it like people have described. It's more of a deeper orange scent, without getting real dark like Orange Dirt (TdH, Fine L'Orange Noir)...it's definitely a clean and vibrant orange, but not sharp like some.

Chris...some updated information on the Asian Plum scent...

It's inspired by (but not a clone) of Calani Seifenmanufaktur Oriental Plum. From what I've read, it's not made anymore and is highly expensive if you can find it.

Many thanks, Josh. I was thinking about trying their vetiver to see how the scent compares to the CRSW.

Ariana & Evans L’Orange Verte | ERN Ator 5/8” Swayback
Currently on Shave #510 | Straight shave #308

Another shave this morning with an Ariana & Evans soap, this time L’Orange Verte. I was on the fence about this soap, fearing that it would be just another incarnation of Terre D’ Hermes, which is a good scent, but just not amongst my favorites. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Now, it is an orange scent, but it doesn’t have the “dirt” quality to the scent that TdH or Fine L’Orange Noir have, which I would describe as a dark and gritty orange, very earthy. This is a more vibrant orange, and the scent notes as listed bear this out. Top notes of bergamot, tangerine, lemon peel and orange really balance each other out well, with the tang of the lemon peel and bergamot balanced out with the sweet citrus of the tangerine and orange. It doesn’t get overwhelming or too sweet, because black pepper and lavender come right in to ground all the citrus, with oakmoss, neroli and patchouli rounding out the scent profile.

Hardware for the day was the ERN Ator swayback and Paladin Manic Depression 28mm select badger brush. This soap lathers very easily, with a 20 second load all that’s needed to build copious amounts of lather for the shave. Three passes, with clean-up provided by the bronze General and I’m BBS all over with a little bit of expected feedback from the alum. Now, what I will say about the aftershave is that even though it has alcohol in it, there’s so much skin food in it that unless you really hacked your face up, there won’t be much feedback from it….just a great moisturizing tincture. I topped off with Amouage Sunshine Man and all was right in the world.

I went ahead and did a video of the shave this morning as well as a review of L’Orange Verte, which should be loaded here my noon EST, provided there aren’t any network issues. It’s Sunday, so no mail-call. I hope everyone has a blessed Sunday!

Very nice shave Josh! You are beginning to cause me more enablement than Dave and that is saying a lot!!!!!

Very nice shave, Josh!

Apologies if I missed it in your journal, but where can I find your video reviews?

Thanks Brad...I have a thread going on in the member video section, and I also post videos, (when applicable), in any of my written reviews. (THB Lavender Creeper and Proraso Single Blade don't have an associated video)

Mystic Water Bergamot, Cedar & Juniper | Gillette Aristocrat (’48-51) | Astra SP (1)
Currently on Shave #511 | Straight shave still at #308

I wasn’t planning on shaving this morning, but it looks like it will be a very early day for me tomorrow (like 5-6 hours earlier than normal), so I figured I’d knock down the stubble that I had in case a shave tomorrow didn’t happen. I pulled one of the MW scents, Bergamot, Cedar & Juniper, and went to town with the Wild West Brushworks 24mm BOSS. Now that I know how to lather this stuff, it really is a good soap. For me, it’s not quite in the realm of Wholly Kaw, A&E, or Declaration, but it holds its own against soaps such as Stirling and Saponificio Varesino beta 4.2. Where it shines is in the post-shave…one of the only soaps to be as moisturizing as DG’s Project Icarus soap.

The shave was only a 2-pass shave with the Aristocrat, loaded with a new Astra blade, XTG and ATG. I did a little too much buffing on the upper lip, so ended with a bit of redness there, but the alum really didn’t give all that much feedback. As I’m checking it now, I’m DFS+…not surprising as my results aren’t quite as good after one day as after two. I did record the shave again this morning, so that should be available over in the reviews section as well as member videos.

I keep forgetting that the Astra’s aren’t the best blade for me in this razor…the Personna’s work much better. But, they are better than others, so c’est la vie.

In other news…Oh yeah, I can’t talk about other news. Have a great start to the week everyone!

HEy Josh. Getting caught up from the weekend. You had a mail call and some shaves. If the Mystic Waters was not to your liking still, like others are getting I recommend one of two things. 1. Try the Shave Stick version (already read why you steer away from them) or 2. Face lather and load more! Add water when you think its about the break add a tiny bit more and BOOM perfect lather!
