I finally got past my fear of germs that have long since died and used my wife's grandfather's Aristocrat. Where has this amazing razor been my whole life? (oh wait....it was in a box in my garage for the past 30 years). Used it for the past 3 days and it's the smoothest razor I've ever used. Effortless and efficient. Paired with a Gillette Silver Blue, it was as close to what a gentleman in the mid 1950's or early 1960's would have experienced every morning. Of course I was missing the lit cigarette on the edge of the sink and a freshly opened Schlitz beer can (the mid-century man was quite the go-getter).
Now I'm concerned that if I send it to get it re-plated that the smoothness will go away and the razor will be relegated to the occasional-use pile. So far the only razor I've had re-plated was RustBoy and he was beyond usefulness when I purchased him...so re-plating was a rescue mission that succeeded. My fear is that the geometry of this Aristocrat is out of tolerance and that's what's causing the perfection. If I get it re-plated, it could get restored to factory specs and that might ruin the razor. Re-plating would extend the life of the razor. I just need to get over the fear that the razor will be ruined.
