The 2nd Annual Williams Mug Soap 3017 Challenge!

*** Another cross-post from my journal ..... but this one is a breakthrough for me with modern Williams ***

Feb.16: ASD2 w/Feather(16) ........... Chubby-2 synth ...... Williams .................................. Nivea Protect & Care balm

BOOM!!!!

The experiment to mix some Proraso pre/post-shave into my grated Williams was a resounding success!! In fact, I think this might have been the best lather I have ever gotten from modern Williams; vintage pucks are a totally different (in a good way) soap IMO.

I am actually looking forward to tomorrow's shave! OMG!!

Used my Semogue Boar today. For some reason (@heysi) I was expecting something magical to happen, to improve my lather. It didn't. I still think my synthetic gives me the best results.

I've only ever used a badger brush until just in the last two or three months when I found a boar brush I rehabed. I've never even tried a synthetic. If its what gives you the best lather, I say keep doing what works.

Williams Day 16
Nice lather this morning. Again started with a puck and brush soak. Dumped the water, squeezed out the brush. Did a 90 count load. Added a few drops of water into the base of the knot and lathered on my face. Lather was wetter than yesterday. Pretty happy with this result.

Shave 18 on my Canadian Willy and usage has ticked up a bit as I predicted now that there's a growing donut in the tub. Up close to 2g / shave now and with odds being that usage will continue to increase, I don't think it'll last the full month. Currently predicting to be done with the soap by late next week.

Lathers continue to be wonderful. Will be looking at our local stores for any remaining stock but haven't seen Williams at my Walgreens or Walmart in over 6 months.

Used an Omega boar instead of the Semogue today and had better results. On par with my synthetics.

Also, while palm loading, my puck broke in half. It was very squishy, so I pressed it into the bowl I’d been keeping it in.

The modern isn’t even close to the older Williams but with the add Clubman Pinaud at least it smells great. I’ll give them credit at least it’s still slick. I usually grate the Williams with De Vergulde Hand and it makes a great clean smelling and performing soap.

Loaded from the puck I smooshed into a bowl, it's soft and well hydrated now. I barely had to add any water to my lather after loading.

Based on my experience with this soap, I think when people have dissipating lather it is due to either having too much water for the amount of soap they have, or they have added too much too soon and not got the water fully incorporated into the lather to make it stable. Too much water makes the lather heavy and If it's not fully incorporated the weight of it pulls the water out, making the lather dissipate. Loading more soap is pretty much the easiest way to fix this, as it makes adding water less finicky. If you start with a drier puck, it just means loading for a much longer time to get enough soap to start with. If the puck it well hydrated it will load quicker and you'll more easily start with the right amount of soap. And when you do add water, be sure to do it slowly, and really swirl it in good before adding more.

I haven't been playing along from the beginning BUT I did start a puck a few days ago just to tag along. The scent is a little stronger than I like (fresh puck?) but the lather has been as easy as any other soap to create. Today I used a horsehair synthetic and I swear it lathered itself while I sat back and watched. One thing about Williams is it that you can easily achieve a "serviceable" lather that is plenty slock but lacks the kind of cushion to prevent irritation OR with a few seconds extra work (and some @Spider slapping paint brush strokes) you can get an outright excellent lather.

Williams Day 19
Lather doesn’t look great in the photo, but I got another good shave using the technique I’ve developed over the course of the month.
