Okay...this is SUPER minor. And would definitely be classified as "First World Problems." I get it...there are much more important things in the world. But this little tiny minor thing is really getting under our skin.
I don't have traditional cable anymore. The wife and I have opted to use streaming services. One of them is Hulu+...though I really don't think Hulu+ is much different than having cable...you know...except it's a lot cheaper. Anyway...there are shows we like to watch on premium channels like HBO, Starz, and Showtime. So we just purchase that individual streaming service for the duration of the show and then cancel and move on to the next one. It works for us.
Additionally, we originally were using an Amazon Fire TV to access the likes of Hulu and other things. We ended up getting a Roku because we discovered that Hulu works better on a Roku than it does on Fire TV (that's just...like...my opinion...man
). So yeah...I have a Fire TV and Roku.
Here is the rub...we were purchasing HBO through Amazon Prime and discovered that HBO Max is the same price as what we were paying. Also, certain movies and programs were only accessed through HBO Max. Supported devices for HBO Max does not include Roku or Amazon devices (which is crazy to me...but hey...I understand...licensing and all...right?) BUT....
BUT....HBO Max is an add on in Hulu. Great...cancel one...get HBO Max through Hulu and all is well. Or Not!
I quickly learned that a good bit...or all...not sure on this...of the HBO Max content is not accessible through Hulu...what gives man? Here is the deal...and I had to kind of dig to figure this out. Yes you can purchase an HBO Max subscription through Hulu. And you can watch all that HBO Max has to offer. But you can't do it through Hulu. Let me say that again...
you can't watch HBO Max content through Hulu. You can watch the content originally intended for HBO on Hulu. So...how do I access the HBO Max stuff? I have to download that app separately.
That's right. I can download the HBO Max app separately...use my Hulu credentials...and gain access. But going back to the original issue...I can't do it on Roku or Fire TV. So I have a Samsung Smart TV...that I may be able to download the app to...but now I am toggling between devices which I was really trying to prevent...and that is if I can download the app.
All of this seems super disingenuous to me and I feel like I have been had. A sort of bait and switch if you will. I knw this is a small thing and I really should focus on more important matters at hand...but it just really got under my skin.
Okay...I feel better now...move along...nothing to see here!
